In the Zone

Although the feel of tension has been building for a week, we are now fully in the stress zone that will continue through August 23. Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, and Pluto are all entangled in a knot of hard aspects in the coming days and likely to set off a series of significant and, at times, deadly events. It is important to remember, in the midst of the turbulence, that when Uranus is active, the underlying theme is to awaken and enlighten us, albeit sometimes suddenly and painfully, so that we may move forward and shed what is no longer useful. When Pluto is active, the underlying theme is to intensify things to such an extent that they implode, allowing a paradigm shift to occur. Thus, it will be useful to consider the coming days not so much for the specific content of whatever drama is being histrionically reported in the news, but for how the unfolding stories change the narrative on significant issues.

Already in the past week, the massive leak of secret Afghan reports from WikiLeaks has stirred up growing concern about the futility of our Afghan war policy and the unreliability of our allies there. In addition, a judge has now declared a moratorium on many of the most onerous parts of the Arizona immigration law, eliciting agitated demonstrations on both sides of the issue.

Mars is now within a degree of its opposition to Uranus (00Aries20), exact in the morning of July 30, and within a degree of its conjunction to Saturn (00Libra49), exact in the early hours of July 31. The transiting Moon conjunct Uranus will trigger both of these volatile aspects all afternoon on July 30, likely igniting explosive events in many parts of the world. With the Mars, Uranus, Saturn combination intensifying, we have already seen a plane crash in Pakistan (Mars at 00Cancer10), a building battle between the government and rebel forces in Yemen (Yemeni President’s Sun is 00Aries), and a military plane crash in Alaska.

Meanwhile, the Jupiter/Pluto square has been within a couple of minutes of exact since July 24, culminating on August 3 at 3Aries/Capricorn11, and expanding the fanatical and ideologically obsessive traits that are already in play (Pluto in a nearly two-year square to US Venus). Transiting Mars will move to oppose Jupiter and square Pluto from the morning of August 2 through very early on August 4, possibly unleashing some violent and/or dramatic circumstances that cause difficulty for President Obama and the US through August 23, as Saturn crosses the US Midheaven (1Libra53) and squares Obama’s Venus (1Cancer47) from July 31 through August 11, followed by the building Saturn/Pluto square in hard aspect to US Venus (3Cancer06) and minor hard aspect to Obama’s Ascendant (18Aquarius03) from August 14 through August 23.

While the coming weeks are likely to be grim, it is useful to consider the changing national narrative that events will engender that may ultimately prove to be crucial to moving forward. It is also helpful to remember that these planetary aspects will be waning by late August, with the exception of Pluto square US Venus, which continues through most of October. Thus, things should ease somewhat by September, at least for a while.

I am back from a wonderful trip to New York and Connecticut. The first official Starlight News luncheon was a tremendous success!! Many thanks to all who attended.

Everyone please be careful during the next week of rather volatile aspects, especially tomorrow all afternoon (to around 5:30 EDT).

Thank you, Starlight! Will try to hold on until Sept.

WTF? Every day gets more bizarre…

Iowa GOP Embraces Plan To Strip Obama’s Citizenship For Accepting Nobel Prize

As we’ve already seen in Maine, some strange ideas are being folded into the emerging revisions of various state GOP platforms. But something truly bizarre is happening in Iowa.
Newsweek’s Jerry Adler has paged through some “387 enumerated planks” of the Republican Party of Iowa’s platform and, among the instances of “North American Union” paranoia and the upholding of manure as the only agricultural poop inveighed by its creator with American exceptionalism, is a bizarre plan to strip President Barack Obama of his citizenship for accepting the Nobel Peace Prize. What the what?

As Adler explains, the Iowa GOP is calling for the “reintroduction and ratification of the original 13th amendment” of the Constitution. The first wrinkle here is that the current 13th Amendment is a rather important one: it bans slavery. But that’s the “bad optics” side of “Thirteentherism.” Here’s the side that is, as they say, “cray-cray” — this is, in part, what the original 13th amendment said:

“If any citizen of the United States shall accept, claim, receive or retain any title of nobility or honour, or shall, without the consent of Congress accept and retain any present, pension, office or emolument of any kind whatever, from any emperor, king, prince or foreign power, such person shall cease to be a citizen of the United States and shall be incapable of holding any office of trust or profit under them, or either of them.”

That language was originally considered by the states in 1810 but, as Jason Hancock at the Iowa Independent points out, “The amendment was ratified by 12 states but never got the 13th state that it needed, and thus, never became law.””

This is the part where Obama, having accepted a Nobel Prize from the Nobel Committee — five people appointed by the Norwegian Parliament — gets stripped of his citizenship. Presumably, this takes care of all sorts of other Nobel laureates, like former President Jimmy Carter, author Toni Morrison, Energy secretary Steven Chu, and economists Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz. Have fun in your new home in Oslo, everyone!

Oh, and also, say goodbye to every lawyer in America!

In the world of the Thirteenthers, though, it’s all a conspiracy, and the leading suspects are those shady characters who put “esquire” after their names. To quote the Web site Constitutional Concepts, “This Amendment was for the specific purpose of banning participation in government operations by attorneys and bankers who claimed the Title of Nobility of ‘Esquire.’ These people had joined the International Bar Association or the International Bankers Association and owed their allegiance to the King of England.” In other words–well, we’re not sure how to explain it any better, but Constitutional Concepts CEO Jim Barrus says in an e-mail that enforcement of the 13th Amendment would strike a blow against “the elected politicians who have grand plans of ruling every facet of America,” and would essentially delegitimize virtually every act of the federal government since 1819. Who wouldn’t want that?
Naturally, most lawyers see it differently. “The esquire thing is ridiculous,” says R. B. Bernstein, a professor at New York Law School and author of Amending America. “‘Esquire’ is not a title of nobility. Back then, they were worried about people accepting literal titles of aristocracy that convey land or privileges, things you can leave to your kids.” Lawyers obviously command certain privileges, but they are not inherited.

Adler confirms that Iowa GOP spokesperson Danielle Plogmann intends this platform plank as “a statement about the delegates’ opinion about Mr. Obama receiving the prize.” But the paranoiac Thirteenther take this unserious matter very seriously.
Per Jason Hancock:

Some, however, argue that it was ratified and have a plethora of conspiracy theories to back up their assertion. These folks, known as “Thirteenthers,” believe that since the amendment would have banned lawyers and bankers from serving in government (since they joined the International Bar Association or the International Bankers Association, respectively), every act of the federal government since 1819 would be delegitimized.

Wow. Just… wow.

Starlight,

I am feeling these transits quite intensely for the past 15 or so days. Although hardly unbearable, I have had to be very careful about my anger - it is roiling and boiling under my skin. I personally feel I have been on my last nerve in a number of instances, personal and public. I am indeed meditating now more than ever and that has been an invaluable practice as it gives me just enough of a delay between my thoughts and my actions.

If I was limited to just one word to describe what I am seeing and feeling all ’round me as of late it would be “absurdity.”

Think Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

Thank you for the added “heads-up” on the riotous few weeks ahead.

Go with God.

I’m so bummed to have missed the luncheon in NYC! Hopefully next time.

Regarding the volatile transits that we’re already stewing in, I have thought for months that we’d experience a hurricane in the Gulf around this time. I assumed it would devastate the already-broken region. Since it seems now as if we’re in the clear for a storm, at least for the next week to ten days, I find myself again wondering what’s on tap. So many small events all over the world since last weekend: the stampede and trampling at the club in Germany, explosions in Pakistan and Iran, several plane crashes, a flood in Iowa earlier in the week, dams breaking, earthquakes, kidnapped and killed soldiers, typhoons, US/Korean military exercises…

It’s almost too much to list. My hope is that the energy is/will play itself out through these more localized events and there won’t be one huge, explosive event during which there is a horrible loss of life. I really pray that this is the case. Meditate meditate meditate!

Too Big Not to Organize – SEIU-International Coalition Try to Unionize the Banks

Through the blare of screeching feedback from portable translation headsets and microphones, unionized bank workers from Brazil, England, Chile, Germany, and Uruguay are encouraging American workers to undertake an unprecedented campaign against a common enemy: Grupo Santander, the global banking giant which last year took control of Sovereign Bank.

The largest bank in the Euro-zone, where it is based, Santander is the world’s eighth largest banking company by market capitalization. While the company is very good at generating profits around the world (it’s the world’s fourth largest bank by profits), this international meeting is focusing on something else: how the bank’s new U.S. branches might become as unionized as branches in Europe and Latin America.

Santander bank branches are on average 75-percent unionized outside the United States, according to UNI Global Union Finance Director Oliver Roethig because most other industrialized nations have unionized banking sectors. In the United States, however, less than 1 percent of all front-office bank workers are organized. In fact, the unionized janitors working for contractors that clean Sovereign Bank’s headquarters in Boston, Mass., often make more than the bank tellers and personal bankers, whose average wage is $10-$12 dollars per hour, despite individually producing millions of dollars in profits for the bank each year.

But the financial sector, at the center of the U.S. economy, has never been unionized. The international workers and local leaders of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Communication Workers of America (CWA) gathered in July to use the clout of global union federations like the UNI Global Union to give labor a foothold in Santander’s Sovereign operations, and potentially organize the industry from there. If Santander employees are heavily unionized overseas, and corporate profits are so robust, then why shouldn’t American workers also join a union?

So do I!!

will,

I’m so sorry you have to endure this pressure of the t-square and sincerely want this to turn out to be a positive thing for you and all the people here who are getting direct hits at the cardinal points.

I thought of you when I read Jeremy Neal’s latest article at Chirotic Journal which gives us his perspective on the t-square. It’s called “The War of Earth and Sky” and I think everybody would gain insight from reading it, especially you with planets at early degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.

http://chirotic.wordpress.com/

starlight,

Your article is so helpful to your readers/fans as it pinpoints the most intense periods to come and your cautionary advice is also greatly appreciated. We can’t say we didn’t see it coming, can we? Thanks too for the additional remarks; I especially appreciate the news of Shirley Sherrod.

I’m totally Zen.
Life is good. No t square for me.

Starlight - Your counsel is so appreciated.

I’ll tell you what I think once this thing has passed. Like Will, I have an Aries Point Sun; mine’s at 00 Aries 40, which means that Saturn transited in opposition of it this morning around 9:50 PDT, but who’s paying attention, right? And with Mars joining the party with Saturn in Libra tomorrow, and Jupiter conjunct Uranus opposing them in Aries, and Pluto T-swuaring them in Capricorn, well, gosh darn. I’ll just have to get back to you all on that.

I can say that I felt a palpable sense of relief now that Saturn has passed in opposition to my Sun for the final time of a triple transit that’s been going on since last autumn. And it’s been fairly decent, and I’m enjoying my new job.

Be gentle and stay safe Jackson.

The oil spill into the Kalamazoo River from a ruptured pipeline is believed to have gushed nearly a million gallons, and while booms have been laid out in the river, officials are worried the oil could reach Lake Michigan, drinking water source for millions. US goes fishing for trouble
By Peter Lee

“…it appears that the United States is once again using a contentious issue to exacerbate a problem, isolate China diplomatically, and to make room for an expanded role for Washington as the protector of the interests of China’s smaller and more anxious neighbors - while diverting attention from certain provocative US actions…

….Is the United States purposefully antagonizing China out of pique? Is it setting the stage for a serious confrontation in the event of a succession crisis in North Korea? Or is it preparing international opinion for China-targeted sanctions over Iran?…

After all, now that the European Union has imposed more stringent sanctions on Iran - and Iran has floated the idea of removing a significant amount of its international financial transactions out of the realm of the dollar and euro by denominating its China energy trade in yuan - there is going to be pressure on the US to protect its allies by keeping China’s paws out of the Iranian honey jar.” … more on line.

Starlight,

Milli grazi for the caveat through tomorrow afternoon.

barbk,

Thank you for you empathy. I am not embarrassed to share that the pressure earlier this week was so intense that I took myself to a local StarWars err, (sic) Starbucks at the break of day, donning a pair of dark glasses. There, in an over-stuffed wrinkled, brown leather chair, I wept like a huge child for about a half hour. I didn’t sob, but the tears rolled freely and fully for the whole of 30 minutes. Luckily, I had enough privacy to have not been noticed. But those drops pretty much washed away a great deal of the pressure, restriction, intense and unrelenting pain and seemingly unending burdens that have plagued me for a number of months.

Today, I found myself unusually but appropriately f firm and direct with a client who has been overtly abusive and manipulative for the past three years. It was a game changer to be certain; astrologically, her 0-Libra Pluto is right on my 0-degree Aries sun point. Welcome Saturn. This is one for the text books.

Many thanks for all of the support and rich discourse herein. Now with Saturn finally moving off a direct opposition to my sun, I hope to be a bearer of all the cheer and things good I might have gotten from Uranus and Jupiter moving over my sun. Who knows - in a few days, I might find myself as fortunate and ebullient as Jackson.

We rock on.

cheers

Deborah,
I think Iran had few options on the matter. Because of the sanctions from the West and Russia, Iran’s only friend is China. Dollars don’t work for Iran now, and I believe China doesn’t mind, in other words I doubt China feels antagonized, being Iran’s only friend, and the benefits to China are immense. First of all China gets to bank all that money from Iran. Imagine that. Anytime a company has to buy oil from Iran, the company will have to deposit dollars or euros in a Chinese bank, and use those funds to pay Iran. Those payments to Iran funds will stay in China. Not a bad deal, imho. On top of that, China gets a friendly relationship with Iran to become partners in developing Iran’s oil fields, sell them whatever Iran needs. Get the picture? Sanctions have two sides, and rarely work as intended.

Wyly Brothers’ $550 Million Stock Sales Draw SEC Suit

Samuel Wyly and Charles Wyly, Texas- based entrepreneurs who financed ads supporting George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns, were sued by U.S. regulators for allegedly misleading investors while selling hundreds of millions of dollars in stock.

The brothers used “an elaborate sham system of trusts and subsidiary companies” in the Isle of Man and Cayman Islands over a 13-year period to hide control of securities linked to companies where they were board members, the Securities and Exchange Commission said today in a lawsuit filed at federal court in New York. They illegally kept investors in the dark as they sold off their holdings, it said.

“The cloak of secrecy has been lifted from the complex web of foreign structures used by the Wylys to evade the securities laws,” the SEC’s deputy enforcement director, Lorin Reisner, said in a statement. “They used these structures to conceal hundreds of millions of dollars of gains in violation of the disclosure requirements for corporate insiders.”

Just Facts Today, Please
Fact Number One: Obama, will go down as the biggest lying snake-oil salesman to assume the throne in the Oval Office in my lifetime. Specifically, one of his PRIMARY campaign platforms was to make Government more transparent. So what do we have with the Farcical Retardation Bill (Financial Reform Bill)? Obama going on The View to sing praises of his accomplishments and pat himself grandly on the back.

But let’s examine this closely: The SEC now has stated that this new “reform” legislation exempts the SEC from the Freedom Of Information Act:

The law, signed last week by President Obama, exempts the SEC from disclosing records or information derived from “surveillance, risk assessments, or other regulatory and oversight activities.” Given that the SEC is a regulatory body, the provision covers almost every action by the agency, lawyers say. Congress and federal agencies can request information, but the public cannot…The SEC cited the new law Tuesday in a FOIA action brought by FOX Business Network.

That’s some kind of reform! Here’s a link to the article I sourced, but this is all over the internet: Obama = Less Transparency I guess the SEC is trying to protect its most favorite and coveted porn-surfing sites.

Thanks Barak Hussein. Who’s side are you on? I could pontificate for hours on just how damaging and useless this new legislation is, but you can do your own due diligence. Anyone who continues to support Obama either refuses to examine the facts or is just simply a complete idiot. As the ultimate poster child for Affirmative Action, Obama sure has proven to be extraordinarily deceitful and useless.

Well wish me luck - I’ve stayed at home as much as possible since a car just stopped in front of me on Saturday and I was about 1.5 inches from acquiring a hood ornament. (Good thing I had my brakes serviced in May)

Tomorrow I’ll be on the road all day. My Venus is at 0 Cancer 34.5, and transits to my Venus just love to hit my budget and my trucks. I had a bit of a tear issue the other day, but for the most part I’m just riding this out and trying not to spend any money. I opted for the late charge on the phone bill, making sure I could afford to pay it before I spent the money.

I have to believe that mars on saturn means go forth and earn money, so forward I go. Hang in there Will. I Know this is not a fun ride. (my saturn is at 6 Capricorn - don’t even want to know what that means.)

B.A.,

Your racism and paranoia is actually palpable. You are one big hatin’ fearin’ machine.

Hate on, Dude. Hate on for the full 8 year term of President Obama.

Happy thoughts.

Will

I really enjoy most of your posts, but I think you should not personally (and rather obnoxiously) attack B.A. or anyone else here no matter how strongly you might disagree with them. I would also be interested in Starlight’s opinion on this…

I too am very disappointed in Obama. Obviously he is light years better than Bush (a very low bar, I’m afraid) but his continuing commitment to the nightmarish ongoing debacle/quicksand of Afghanistan, his scaling back of transparency in Govt., his inaction on closing Guantanamo and insisting on ‘extraordinary’ (i.e. unconstitutional) powers to detain U.S. citizens, his shocking reliance on ex Goldman people to run economic policy, his very weak response to the BP Oil Spill, etc. DOES NOT represent “CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN”!

Obviously no matter who would have been elected
(meaning someone genuinely progressive) he/she would be facing an enormous uphill battle, but Obama IMO has not used the “bully pulpit” to tell it like it really is (unless he does not have a clue) re what is now really needed to start the recovery process after the disastrous last eight years.

For example, he should have immediately directed Eric Holder to bring criminal indictments against all those involved in torturing prisoners (including Cheney + Rumsfeld as swell as John Yoo and the other scumbag lawyers he approved waterboarding, etc.) as well as the Grifters responsible for stealing billions (Blankfein would have been a good starting point) through totally misrepresenting fraudulently based financial instruments (CDO’s, etc.) while actually at the same time betting against them, as they sold them to pension funds, states, foreign entities, etc.

OK Will, please tell me what you have to say to this very dissatisfied and disillusioned person, (hopefully without invectives).

gosh, barbk…thanks for that link to Chiriotic. It’s truly an amazing article, especially for those who are in the spotlight these days…

“the only winners are going to be those who can keep themselves in check.”

my constant mantra for the near future…

thanks again for your good medicine…I look for your wisdom daily, either here or at PW. btw…you’re getting me hooked on yods, could have something to do with one leg in my early Aries stellium getting gently blasted, huh? and then there’s Chiron…

BA - don’t dare lay it at Obama’s feet - its the many corrupt legislators that watered the bill down that are to blame. Half measures are all that can be accomplished since there are so many, because of their own nefarious motives, determined that he should fail.

Hi Deborah,

Political maneuvering behind the scenes, especially in international affairs (re: the Peter Lee article you cited) is not surprising.

What is more interesting to me, and that - purely from an astrological point of view are the stressful aspects involved in the August 7th cardinal grand cross hitting China, the US and North Korea.

Tem Tarritkar in a 2004 article observed….

“…August 6-7, 2010: A cardinal grand cross is formed, involving Jupiter-Uranus in Aries, Pluto in Capricorn, the Moon in early Cancer, and Venus joining Mars and Saturn in early Libra. The Sun at 15° Leo makes stressful aspects (45°/135°) to the entire grand cross.”

A little digression might be necessary. A curious thing happened with the sinking of the South Korean war ship on March 26th (9:22 pm local time) - primarily responsible for the current tensions on the Korean peninsula. Astrologically, there was an exact Sun-Pluto square at 5 Aries - Capr.; a precise mirror image of the Uranus - Mars square of June 25, 1950 (5 Cancer - Libra) the day that North Korea invaded South Korea.

When studying the North Korean natal chart; this sensitive area of the North Korean chart becomes more comprehensible if you take into account NK’s natal Chiron (the planetary body representing the wound that never heals). NK’s natal Chiron is located at 20 Scorpio; right at the semi/sesqui-square degree to those points.

The upcoming Cardinal Cross of Aug 7th has an exact Moon-Mars square at 5 Cancer-Libra with Mars occupying the same precise position it had with the onset of the 6/25/50 Korean War. The US natal Jupiter at 5 Cancer is directly in the line of fire. Two days later, the 17 Leo New Moon will be conjoining China’s natal Pluto.

There’s a lot more involved in these aspects, but for the time being I’d prefer to keep it simple.

It’s difficult to determine if hostilities will actually erupt at this time, but the aspects appear to be extremely volatile, esp. with NK’s natal Uranus at 0 Cancer being hit in several different directions.

Here’s one chart (the Aug. 7th Grand Cross) for quick reference….

kiwijeanie,

Clarity of who is responsible for what is very important if we’re to hold politicians accountable. I think the Democrats in congress and Obama are responsible for the financial reform bill. If Obama didn’t like the bill, he could have vetoed it.

I just read Krugman blaming Rubin for deregulating the banking industry (the GLB Act). Congress passed the deregulating bill with a veto-proof vote in the senate and the house, but for some reason Bill Clinton or Rubin or both are responsible for deregulating the financial institutions, holding the Democrats and Republicans in congress harmless. I remember congress was at war with the Clinton administration because of the Lewinsky affair, and Phil Gramm was no friend of Bill Clinton. Congress has been pushing deregulation as far back as the 70s.
Below is a link of a little history about deregulation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deregulation#United_States

News out of LA at 11:30 PM Thursday stated that the Crown Fire north of LA was burning out of control and completely uncontained. It has already burned 5500 acres and is expected to consume more overnight; over 1200 people are subject to mandatory evacuations.

We talked several days ago about Mars’ opposition first to Uranus in Aries, and then to Jupiter, possibly signifying wildfires. Mars entered Libra Thursday in the late afternoon, and the Mars Uranus opposition is exact in the morning. I sincerely hope that the Mars/Jupiter opposition on 8/3 doesn’t symbolize a major expansion of this or other wildfires. This is just one more expression of the current cardinal stresses to watch.

Welcome back Starlight.

Heeding your latest ‘zone’ report. Thanks.
I read that S. Korea/U.S. war games ended a couple of days ago, so I hope at least that potential explosive situation will not play into this weekends explosive transits.

Is there a chart for Anthony Weiner in the “house”? Thanks Pat C; a beautiful example of Mars conjunct Saturn, square Pluto, opposed Uranus/Jupiter. Bravo Anthony!

Thank you once again, Nancy. An analogy might be this: Storm clouds are gathering. It’s a nasty one, no playing outside in the rain. Tornadoes have been spotted. Lightening has already knocked out power. So, stay inside. Light the candles. When the storm is over, go out and clean up. Your neighbor might need help too. We’re all in this together.

Karen - Nice analogy!

zea - Good news! thanks.

Let’s see:

Obama said in the campaign he would escalate in Afghanistan;

Republicans have blocked Obama’s attempts to close Guantanamo;

GOP watered down financial reform;

there actually is a great deal more transparency except in some areas;

and, at the risk of starting a flame war, I don’t care who reads my emails, etc., since there is nothing interesting in them, and this type of spook-snooping has actually been very effective in leading to the arrest of several home grown terrorists. So, flame away. Mars is opposite Uranus/Moon all afternoon.

Oil industry safety record blown open

National Wildlife Federation says catalogue of oil industry accidents proves BP disaster in Gulf of Mexico is not a one-off

The oil industry has been responsible for thousands of fires, explosions, and leaks over the last decade, killing dozens of people and destroying wildlife and the environment across America, according to a report published today.

None of the individual incidents catalogued by the National Wildlife Federation comes close in scale to BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst environmental disaster in America’s history. But the thousands of lesser offshore spills, pipeline leaks, refinery fires and other accidents demolish the industry argument that BP’s ruptured well was a one-off, and that the oil and gas business has grown safer, the report’s authors said.

“These disasters make it clear that the BP disaster isn’t a rare accident,” said Tim Warman, who directs the global warming programme for NWF, which calls itself the country’s largest conservation organisation. “These are daily occurrences. These are daily incidents of not paying attention.”

When I “feel” or sense racism, as I did in B.A.s wild diatribe, I call it out. Its not B.A. I called out, its B.A.’s rhetoric that I found bizarre, hateful, distorted and offensive.

Maybe you are overly identified with B.A.’s position and YOU took it personally, ergo came to his/her (sorry, I don’t know B.A.’s gender) defense.

With respect to your “I would also be interested in Starlight’s opinion on this.” - Really, Richard; what are you, the third-grade lunch-room monitor in kindergarten who needs to snitch to the teacher. Please.

I calls ‘em like I see’s ‘em, Richard.

The WP has an interesting web page. The Sarah Palin endorsement tracker. Most of her endorsement wait for results, but 10 out of 14 have already won, and of the 10 who won, I count 5 as Tea Party candidates, not GOP establishment. If she continues with the current success, she’ll be in a good position to launch her campaign for the GOP nomination in 2012. The Tea Party may end up as an organization that’s as dedicated and juiced up as Obama’s organization in the 2008 campaign.

The FINRA bill is just another indication that BOTH parties are hopelessly corrupt and in the pay of who ever can finance the next election for them.

The simple fix would have been Glass/Steigel 2. Separate investment and transactional banking, with the FDIC only backing the later.

This was not done. Nor was the bill vetoed. Coincidently, a goodly chunk of Obamas contributions came from wall street.

Then there is the patriot act.

Now, the SEC is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, the same SEC that had their noses rubbed in Madoff for 10 years and did nothing.

My conclusion is that Obama is corrupt, and with him the majority of the representatives of both parties.

I can think of several exceptions:

Kucinich, Ron Paul, and Feingold.

No one is above criticism, regardless of their color or lack of it.

For a good explanation of this last blow up, and the problems with FINRA, here is

Stiglitz in Australia a day or so ago. The actual speech begins at the 11.5 minute mark…

August Horoscopes
by Henry Seltzer

-snip-

By the middle of September first Uranus and then Jupiter will have retrograded back into Pisces. Saturn will have moved deeper into Libra and so out of the most intense phase of its opposition to Uranus although remaining within orb for another year or so. The Pluto-Uranus square is just coming into bloom, with many exact hits yet to come, the soonest taking place about two years hence, in June of 2012. This all translates into further transformation for the American scene and for each one of us personally in the years ahead, but without the violent polarization that we see now in the political landscape, and that might reach its peak this summer and early fall.

What does it mean that the pace for change, already so intense, continues unabated into the present monthly timeframe? Only that we are made even more aware of the necessity for radical transformation in our own lives, and in the life of the society around us. Surely most are beginning to recognize that our current ways cannot go on much longer without incurring a grave risk of losing everything. And this applies equally to our individual decisions also. It takes a community of concerned individuals to make social change a reality. Greater changes within each of our individual lives are also more than possible as we confront and begin to more closely examine the results of unchecked ego, and of unalloyed knee-jerk reaction to early conditioning applied over the long term.

White House proposal would ease FBI access to records of Internet activity

Lawyer Stewart Baker said the change would sometimes “mean giving a lot more information to the FBI.” (Courtesy Of The Department Of Homeland Security)

By Ellen Nakashima
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 29, 2010
The Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to compel companies to turn over records of an individual’s Internet activity without a court order if agents deem the information relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation.

(FBI access to e-mail and web records raises fears)

The administration wants to add just four words — “electronic communication transactional records” — to a list of items that the law says the FBI may demand without a judge’s approval. Government lawyers say this category of information includes the addresses to which an Internet user sends e-mail; the times and dates e-mail was sent and received; and possibly a user’s browser history. It does not include, the lawyers hasten to point out, the “content” of e-mail or other Internet communication.

Some years ago, there was an article in Mountain Astrologer predicting a police state in the US for the next 80 - 100 years or so.

I voted for Obama partly in response to that.

Silly me.

Wyly Brothers, Top Republican Bankrollers, Accused of Massive Fraud

Charles Wyly Jr. and Samuel Wyly, Texas businessmen and brothers who are among the nation’s most generous campaign donors to Republican political candidates and causes, were today hit with a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit accusing them of fraud worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

-snip-

The SEC accuses the Wylys of pocketing $550 million in undisclosed money over 13 years.

“The cloak of secrecy has been lifted from the complex web of foreign structures used by the Wylys to evade the securities laws,” Lorin Reisner, the SEC’s deputy enforcement director, said in a statement this afternoon. “They used these structures to conceal hundreds of millions of dollars of gains in violation of the disclosure requirements for corporate insiders.”

Republicans Thwart New Campaign Finance Disclosure Rules As DISCLOSE Act Fails Procedural Vote in Senate

A unified Democratic caucus generated 57 “yes” votes — three shy of the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster and allow the legislation, known as the DISCLOSE Act, to advance to an up-or-down vote. For procedural reasons, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) switched his vote from a “yes” to a “no” in order to bring the bill up again at a later date.

-snip-

President Barack Obama has championed the DISCLOSE Act and warned against the consequences of inaction.

“Corporate lobbyists will be able to tell members of Congress if they don’t vote the right way, they will face an onslaught of negative ads in their next campaign. And all too often, no one will actually know who’s really behind those ads,” Obama said during an event in the Rose Garden of the White House on Monday. “A group can hide behind a name like ‘Citizens for a Better Future,’ even if a more accurate name would be ‘Companies for Weaker Oversight.’

“A vote to oppose these reforms is nothing less than a vote to allow corporate and special interest takeovers of our elections,” Obama continued.

B.A. - I had to smile at your response above to a police state. For decades and way before Obama, we have been tracked by drug stores, grocery stores, credit card companies, bar coded coupons so companies/government know exactly where we are, what store purchases we make, how much we spend and WHERE we spent it. Telephone companies know who we called, for how long we talked. ATM’s know what accounts we have, how much money we use, and where we are when we need money. Your cell calls can be pinpointed as to where you are and when, GPS’s, etc, etc, etc. ….and any government agency or private person can use this information and for whatever purpose. So next time you buy a loaf of bread with a bar coded store tag, coupon or credit card, you have gone PUBLIC!. ENJOY THE PUBLIC STATE, and if the police are looking for you, you can’t hide.

Fellow Starlight posters - I’m interested in finding a few people who might be interested in reviewing my book. This is stuff you all know and more to bring basic understanding to those not familiar with astrology, etc. You can contact me through my website if interested. Thanks!

US expert: China oil spill far bigger than stated

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hnRc-COAnkwXl4pq3IR3420c9jQQD9H9CJV80
China’s government has said 1,500 tons (461,790 gallons) of oil spilled after a pipeline exploded two weeks ago near the northeastern city of Dalian, sending 100-foot- (30-meter-) high flames raging near one of the country’s key strategic oil reserves. It has not updated that estimate since a few days after the spill.

But Rick Steiner, a former University of Alaska marine conservation specialist, estimated 60,000 tons (18.47 million gallons) to 90,000 tons (27.70 million gallons) of oil actually spilled into the Yellow Sea.

“It’s enormous. That’s at least as large as the official estimate of the Exxon Valdez disaster” in Alaska, he told The Associated Press.

Stewart To Media: ‘Nothing Obama Does Will Ever Make You F**king Happy’ (VIDEO)

Lorrie,

The Stewart piece, “Nothing Obama Does Will Ever Make You F–king Happy” video pretty much says it all. Outstanding and hilarious! Thanks for posting.

You sound like a protagonist of a Greek tragedy.
There’s a common thread in many Greek tragedies. Protagonists in the plays work to outwit destiny and defeat it, but the efforts only create the conditions that make the prediction true. The moral of the story is that destiny has its own momentum and to try to change it is foolhardy.

Bette,
Sad, but you are so right. Destiny has its own momentum. C’est la vie.

Bettie –

Up to now, you and your loaf can avoid detection by paying cash.

However, burred in the Obama care bill is verbiage to the effect that paying in cash for anything over USD 600 requires that the recipient of the cash fill out a 1099 and send it to the govmt. And corps. are not exempt, meaning, if you go down and buy a riding lawnmower from Home Depot, you have got to send them a 1099 at year end.

And if you sell anything (say on ebay) valued at more than 600, the purchaser has to send you a 1099. The way it worked for non wage income it was cumulative, so if you continued to deal with that person, you had to aggregate all the transactions and report.

Also not vetoed.

I do not believe in “destiny and its momentum.”

Those who write and pass such legislation are to blame for it. It is not destiny.

It is corruption and stupidity.

>>recipient of the cash

Sorry, should be: payer of the cash.

Obama Administration In Danger Of Establishing “New Normal” With Worst Bush-Era Policies, Says ACLU

http://www.aclu.org/national-security/obama-administration-danger-establishing-new-normal-worst-bush-era-policies-says-a

Again, thanks Pat C for the link; Rep Weiner has a firecracker chart just waiting for a match.

For starters, his Virgo Sun is conjunct Pluto. . and Uranus. . . and Mercury rx. These planets sextile his Neptune in Scorpio.

His Mars cunjunct Venus in Cancer are sextile his Jupiter in Taurus and trine his Juno (champ of underdogs) and Pallas (warrior lady) in Scorpio.

His Venus/Mars is also conjunct the U.S. Mercury (opposite U.S. Pluto), one more of the several links showing a gift for passionate communicating.

For example, his progressed Mercury went direct when he was about 9 years old and has now progressed to 29+ Libra, trine his progressed Saturn.

His natal Saturn retro at 0+ Pisces has progressed to 28+ Aquarius retro, which happens to conjunct the U.S. (Sibly) Moon. (This is a marker of a successful run for Presidency of U.S.) Both are being transited by Neptune and Chiron. (Anthony Weiner’s natal Neptune is trine his natal Chiron too.)

I’m not sure what lit that match yesterday, but I have 2 possibilities:

(1)Transiting Mars had just gone into 0 Libra which would be quincunx his natal Saturn (where Chiron was 4/20-7/20) causing a lot of irritation, and when combined with transiting Uranus at 0+ Aries quincunx his Saturn, it created a yod (finger of God) with his Saturn at the pointy end.

This Saturn forms the handle of a “bucket” pattern, with all his other major planets in a group, no matter what time of day, between Jupiter in Taurus and Neptune in Scorpio. This pattern releases the “bucket” part of the energy pattern through the “handle”, Saturn, similar to the yod action. This would be a double whammy for his natal Saturn.

(2) The other possibility is that his progressed Moon is in an early degree of Aries, where transiting Jupiter and Uranus are, and square Pluto and opposed Mars/Saturn.

There’s a lot more in this chart and we don’t even have his birthtime! What we do have is birthdate 9/4/64 in NYC.

I love Mars conjunct Saturn at 0 Libra - best day I’ve had in weeks. Saturn has been sitting on my Venus pretty heavily, Uranus Stationed square it when it went retrograde. I see hope. Picked up a new account after I finished my work, and made it home an hour earlier than I expected. So glad I just went with how things set. (I tried to schedule today’s work for last week, and they couldn’t set appt for then.)

And “ENJOY THE PUBLIC STATE, and if the police are looking for you, you can’t hide.”

Yes you can hide. The Dallas cops can have the GPS info sent out by your stolen phone, stolen by guys that can held a gun to your head when they took all your stuff, and they will sit on their duffs and say the stuff isn’t valuable enough to knock on that door. Just because the government knows where you are, doesn’t mean they’ll bother to come investigate you if you commit a crime.
(A friend of mine’s daughter was the victim of the crime - you’d think that gps on the cell phone would maybe generate a search warrant??)

Anthony Weiner — the first Jewish Pres of the USA! I wish he was still single…. :>)

Strengthen Social Security Coalition Puts Both Parties on Notice

http://www.truth-out.org/strengthen-social-security-coalition-puts-both-parties-on-notice61877

Correction to Rep. Weiner’s chart remarks . . . .scratch the yod of trans Mars, natal Saturn. . that part - Mars to Saturn IS in quincunx but to be a yod 0 Taurus (not 0 Aries) would be the other leg. So 0 Aries, where Uranus is, is merely opposite Mars at 0 Libra, not a quincunx and so not part of a yod. No pointy part. So sorry.

Stephanie,

Hadn’t thought of that; Pres. Weiner the 1st Jewish president of U.S.A. Now that would be cool!

Barbk

I just caught his fit on Diane Sawyers program tonight. Does anyone have a link to the whole thing? Hopefully this will embolden Dems to grow a spine?

A couple things:

1. Lorrie, I emailed you re: your book. It looks awesome! Can’t wait to read it.

2. So, here’s how this lovely transit worked for me: husband had a mild heart attack last evening and ended up having angioplasty today for one artery that was 90% blocked. Funny (not really) that Nancy called that when she did my chart reading back in March. She kept asking me about my husband’s health and I kept thinking it was really about his dad who had coronary bypass surgery last year. Silly me. Since she pinpointed it in the fall rather than now, I suspect there is more fun to come. Thanks for the heads up, Nancy. (Husband is fine - coming home tomorrow - mostly unhappy about feeling helpless and not in control. Maybe should get his chart read, eh?)

3. I love Anthony Weiner. LOVE HIM. Just a wonderful man.

4. Will - heh. I love you too.

5. Welcome back Nancy!

Okay, whew! That’s all for me.

Hi Lorrie U,

I went to the Philip Sedgewick link you provided but could not navigate to “A Full Fortnight Ahead.”

Any suggestions?

Bravo on writing a book! And yes, I’d be happy to review it. Let me know the details.

MysticalChick,

Wow! Angioplasty on the husband, huh? Lucky, lucky, lucky! Do you or hubby have any of those early Cardinal planet placements? All good things to you both - rest, pray, heal.

And thank you for your sweet message.

About Weiner - love his white-hot passion - really love it and wish there was more of that in both chambers of Congress - some authenticity.
Sadly, that kind of honest, raw emoting is feared by the massive coward-quotient therein. Jesus, do you remember how they crucified Howard Dean for emitting a celebratory “yahoo” a few years ago - it cost him his candidacy. Maybe times will continue to change wherein we will see some of these wonderful human fireworks again to keep it real.

cheers

Just an observation re: July 29th, 9:21 PM post (sorry I’m late in catching up on my reading):

The “racist” “diatribe” was not written by B.A.; it was written by the blogger who calls himself “Dave in Denver”, at truthingold.blogspot.com. When I saw this blog post recently, I strongly disagreed with its extreme attack on Obama. I have, however, found Mr. D in D often to be a very astute observer of the economy and the laws that affect it, so I was able to moderate my reaction somewhat. I suspect that Mr. D in D has some planets aspected by the Cardinal Grand Cross….I’m grateful to have had little problem myself so far (no planets in the immediate line of fire, lucky me!), except for my worst head cold in years.

Best wishes to all in navigating the coming weeks, and thanks for the wonderful perspectives and information!

Claudia

I was having a discussion with a fellow astrologer yesterday and he pointed out that Hades, the trans-neptunian planet often associated Plutonian issues (refer to the following article: http://www.archiedunlop.com/2010/06/03/hades-planet-of-death-garbage-and-crime/ ) is currently arriving at the 0 Cancer ingress degree in the next few days. This landmark event hasn’t occurred in 400 years. It only tends to reinforce the notion that the Aug 7th Cardinal Cross with Obama’s natal Venus at 1 ‘47 Cancer (squared by tr. Saturn - 1 ‘29 Libra) may have momentous implications for him and the US administration. The unspoken concern of an attempted assassination cannot be ruled out.

Here’s more info on the aspects coming up…….

Cardinal Grand Cross August 2010

The first two weeks of August 2010 is the climax of the ongoing T-square involving Saturn, Uranus and Pluto. Because the planets involved are in Cardinal signs it has been labeled the Cardinal Cross, but it is also being called the Cardinal crisis, Cardinal Climax and even Cosmic Cross. During this time, these three planets are within two degrees total orb, the tightest of this T-square’s life. That alone makes this period important because the last time there was a similar pattern with these planets was in the early 1930′s, the Great Depression and the downward spiral toward world war and the deaths of 70 million people. What makes this time so critical is the involvement of other planets and lunations making this thing a super charged Grand Gross.

The Lunar Eclipse of June 2010 was conjunct Pluto, and the Sun and Mercury in the early degrees of Cancer is what turned this long term T-square into a long term Grand Cross, as eclipses have an effect which lasts about six months.

Jupiter is again applying in conjunction to Uranus on the fixed star Scheat. We saw an upsurge in natural disasters and air crashes last time Jupiter came toward Uranus back in May. Venus and Mars join Saturn early August, and on 6 and 7 August the Moon will be opposite Pluto again making a Grand Cross.

“This is assumed by astrologers studying mundane astrology that it shall be a time with many great challenges and dramatic changes. This aspect resembles another grand cross that occurred during the 1930s … Therefore, mundane astrologers predict dramatic changes (economic, social, military, scientific) to occur again in the years ahead” Mundane astrology – Wikipedia.

All the astrology forums and most astrology bloggers will be talking about this Grand Cross, it really is the most powerful thing we are likely to see for a long time. Personally I think it is a big deal and I am concerned about events unfolding especially in the global economy and military hot-spots. Events that have occurred in the months leading up to now, and any events that happen in the next few weeks should have deep and lasting effects for us all. Particularly important I believe will be the effect of Mars activating things (UT)

Mystical Chick - Thanks for offering to review, have responded by email before reading about your husband. Sorry for the scare but hopefully this will prevent something worse!

Will - Would love you to review, email me through my website (click on my name)!

And I concur! Anthony Weiner rocks. Very authentic feelings expressed of real outrage. How refreshing! I think people will perceive it differently from Dean. Hope it makes his career sizzle. Wish there were more like him.

BarbK, your analysis of his chart is spectacular as always.

The GOP Plot to Screw the Economy and the Middle Class

We’re only three months away from the midterm election when a shockingly large number of American voters will inexplicably vote for Republican candidates. I have no idea if this will mean a Republican takeover of the House or Senate or both, but there will definitely be enough voter support for Republicans to significantly reduce the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

Why? Because too many voters tend to be low-information, knee-jerk Springfield-from-The-Simpsons types, and the Republicans have lashed their crazy trains to this new wave of inchoate roid-rage to help sweep them into more congressional seats.

-snip-

Unless there’s some sort of mass epiphany, or unless the Democrats actually speak up and take the discourse by the horns and fight, middle class American voters in November will augment the number of Republicans (and conservadems) in Congress mostly because they’ve been suckered into endorsing these insane Republican economic policies. Subsequently, the Republicans will balloon the deficit and undermine the economic recovery in order to give more handouts to the super rich. And the middle class will continue to be an accomplice in its own slow-roasted homicide.

WikiLeaks Posts Mysterious ‘Insurance’ File
July 30, 2010 | 3:09 pm

In the wake of strong U.S. government statements condemning WikiLeaks’ recent publishing of 77,000 Afghan War documents, the secret-spilling site has posted a mysterious encrypted file labeled “insurance.”

The huge file, posted on the Afghan War page at the WikiLeaks site, is 1.4 GB and is encrypted with AES256. The file’s size dwarfs the size of all the other files on the page combined. The file has also been posted on a torrent download site as well.. …..

I am thoroughly grossed-out by the insanely over-the-top wedding production ala Hillary and Bill. I am all for having a wonderful party, but with the country in such a horrid economic and moral state at present, WTF are these “Democratic” leaders thinking? I mean, really, three-to-five MILLION dollars to entertain a few hundred ultra rich elites? A private fire-works display on the Hudson? What is this, Versailles? I believe this is in incredibly poor taste for our Secretary of State. Thank God President Barack Obama was not even invited; he and Michelle are wise to distance themselves from this obscene display of wealth and indulgence.

And please, don’t tell me it created jobs - really? How many and for how long - 3 or 4 days - jees, don’t spend all those wages in one place, you lucky bunch of caterers and florists.

On a purely astrological note, they must really be out-of-the-loop. Imagine throwing a wedding as the Cardinal Cross is tightening up - and during an Aries moon!?!? Yuk!

Barfing for America

will -

That marriage certainly seems to have a fated quality with this planetary line up.
I haven’t really been paying too much attention to the press coverage, but my guess is that Chelsea would have preferred to have her ultra-elaborate wedding without all the prying eyes. Or maybe her extreme efforts at privacy had more to do with security issues.

What I find most ‘interesting’ about this union is WHO she is marrying and their ‘pedigree’ (if you can call it that), though this doesn’t seem to interest the media or bloggers. And perhaps that’s just as well.
Marc Mezvinsky is a hedge fund banker that she’s apparently known since childhood. He is Jewish, she is Methodist. His mother was a television journalist (Margorie Margolies) that served one term in Congress and whose father Ed also took a turn in Congress only to later be called a “one man crime wave” according to prosecutors who convicted him of bank fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud to the tune of $10 million+ …whew! So with the only daughter of the Clintons marrying into such a clan, it was bound to be quite the gathering. And perhaps this marriage is the sum total and perfect metaphor for this cosmic combo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Mezvinsky

Oops, meant to finish my thought about Chelsea being an only child, while Marc is one of ELEVEN kids (a combination of children from a previous marriage, five adoptions, and the rest from the union of Marjorie and Ed which produced Marc).
And did I mention that Marc worked for Goldman Sachs?

Okay, that’s the extent of my knowledge of ‘interesting’ facts.

At least 170 injured after moderate earthquakes hit northeastern, southern Iran

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) — At least 170 people were injured and scores of homes were damaged after a moderate earthquake struck northeastern Iran on late Friday afternoon, officials said. A second earthquake, in the country’s south, struck on Saturday.

The first earthquake at 6.20 p.m. local time (1350 GMT) on Friday, with a strength of 5.7

B.A.

Congress passes laws and they passed Financial reform. Republicans had their say and way in many of the particulars.

The bill is better than no bill and right now with the polarity in this country this is the best we can get. Hopefully, later when and if the country is no longer so divided we can pass further improvements.

Obama is taking steps towards making things better for the common people, but he has formidable foes with deep, deep pockets. If he vetoes everything but the perfect bill then nothing will ever get done and that is precisely what the rich who work behind the scenes and from under rocks want to happen - nothing to change.

Obama has to work with the politicians that we the people elected and sent to Congress. If we want to help Obama keep his promises then we need to elect politicians who will help him and then hold those politicians feet to the fire.

Each one of us has a duty and responsibility as a citizen in this country - not just the President of the United States.

The President can not fix this with out our help and support and if he fails, the country fails and we fail and the unintended consequences for all of us will be horrific.

A Sin and a Shame
By BOB HERBERT

The treatment of workers by American corporations has been worse — far more treacherous — than most of the population realizes. There was no need for so many men and women to be forced out of their jobs in the downturn known as the great recession.

Many of those workers were cashiered for no reason other than outright greed by corporate managers. And that cruel, irresponsible, shortsighted policy has resulted in widespread human suffering and is doing great harm to the economy.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Andrew Sum, an economics professor and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston. “Not only did they throw all these people off the payrolls, they also cut back on the hours of the people who stayed on the job.”

As Professor Sum studied the data coming in from the recession, he realized that the carnage that occurred in the workplace was out of proportion to the economic hit that corporations were taking. While no one questions the severity of the downturn — the worst of the entire post-World War II period — the economic data show that workers to a great extent were shamefully exploited.

Tora - Well said!

I got pregnant and married in the Uranus/Pluto conjunction opposing Saturn of the mid 60s. My marriage lasted 30 years, but the divorce did not destroy our deep friendship. We speak to each other every week, have family reunions with the children. Of course when I tied the knot, I had not idea that it wasn’t the best time to marry. We had nothing when we married, and lived paycheck to paycheck the first few years. By the time we divorced, we had accumulated a nice little nest egg for the old age. Parted amicably, with both writing the division of assets.
The current t square is nothing compared to the disruptive world we were experiencing when we married at 19 and 20.
I don’t agree with those who are in a tizzy over the expense of the wedding. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t remember the Clintons throwing big parties, and they’re giving her child with their money what she wants. I’m happy for Chelsea, and I pray she has all the happiness in the world. She’s a beautiful woman.

Tora,

Your explanation and counseling to B.A. was A+ Thank you very much for doing in such a clean, elegant, beautiful grammar.

Debra, Zea. Prabhata,

Maybe I being far too Saturnine in my rant about the vulgar wedding - sorry - I just don’t get it. But I don’t mean to be a buzz kill and I certainly don’t mean to malign the Clintons for their public service - not at all.

Sorry if I came off overly harsh.

I want to make another point about the over 2 million dollar wedding of Chelsea and ask those who feel that it’s insensitive to spend that kind of money for Chelsea when so many can’t meet their expenses. On January 20, 2009, the Obamas threw an inaugural party that was the most expensive ever. The WH still throws parties, and life goes on.

You know I’m reminded of those old silk hat movies of the thirties. People back then use to go to the movies to see how the other half lived. I think that’s happening today as well, but we can watch on so many other mediums now, but the divide is here again.

I love Chelsea Clinton. I love her family.

Chelsea through the years
http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/07/29/chelsea.clinton.photos/index.html

No matter what the cost, security is probably the biggest expense, and because it’s a private affair, the Clintons have to pay for most of it. Maybe excluding security, the cost of the wedding is less than a million dollars.

politcalticker.blogs.cnn says:
…a longtime Clinton family friend pushes back, telling CNN National Correspondent Jessica Yellin the cost is actually less than $1 million. Regarding the many wedding planners who are guessing at the cost of Chelsea’s wedding – this Clinton family friend tells CNN, “Maybe it’s because these planners said they couldn’t do it for less than 2 to 5 million – that’s exactly why they weren’t picked as the planner.”

I didn’t know Maxine Waters had ethic problems. She’s decided to go to trial.

Tora,

Unlike many on this site, I continue to believe that “the buck stops here”. This is the Obama adm watch, and he is ultimately responsible.

He has appointed Geithner and Summers, both imho front men for wall street banks. He did that, not congress. Re the 2nd patriot act, he could have vetoed it. He did not. Re more internet snooping as outlined above, that is his doing, not congress. IMHO FINRA is a joke and merely entrenches and further enriches those who have paid for Obamas election. Further, it will not prevent another similar event. My views are more in line with the following:

http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspot.com/2010/07/five-more-failed-banks-cost-us.html

The banks continue to mount a campaign to resist reform and regulation. They are taking advantage of the weakness of the Obama administration in failing to reform the banking system through liquidations and managed bankruptcies, including indictments and investigations as was seen in the Savings and Loan scandal.

It is difficult to continue to assume good intentions in this administration, or even mere incompetence. The objections put up by Geithner and Summers to the appointment of Elizabeth Warren as the head of the new consumer protection agency shows how reactionary they continue to be, and resistant to fundamental reforms.

===================

Most (but not all) Politicians “dance with them that brung them”.

Obama is no different.

B.A.
Now you want to convince others of what you didn’t believe in 2008.
Obama was never a transformational politician. and probably will never be because he’s never demonstrated to be one.
As an organizer he was not even close to a Cesar Chavez, as a politician, he was not well known outside IL until the 2004 Democratic Convention speech. As an editor of the Harvard Review, he never wrote a single paper that defined him as an academic or a great mind. He wrote two books and tooted his horn, and you believed.

I’m of the opinion that the birth chart of the U.S. is 11:00 AM, not 5:00 PM. At 11:00 AM, the moon was at 23:27 Aquarius in the chart. The moon represents the people. In 2008, Neptune, in Aquarius, was influencing the voters (the moon). Wishful thinking leads to disappointments. Now many voters are disappointed; it’s late. It is what it is. I’m immune to Neptune’s magic, but Neptune helped me see illusion en masse chanting: “Obama, Obama, Obama”

If I’m wrong and Obama is that transformational politician before he leaves office, I’ll be happy to be wrong.

B.A.,

The level of your idealistic projections upon PBO s a savior or Big Daddy, Fix Everything that is broken right now and the way I want it to be fixed” is stunning. Such a massive projection of one’s own wishes and dreams onto one other person will always result in a correspondingly massive disappointment.

I wish you could “get” this and relieve yourself of so much unnecessary pain.

Tora:

Good job and appreciate your clear and concise explanation of the facts. Yes, there is one President, and there is also two other branches of government, the legislative and judicial, and both of those are deeply divided by partisanship and rhetoric.

I cannot ascribe to the President being all-powerful and that the buck stops here with him or her. There is a systems of checks and balances in government established from the beginning, and of which the White House is just a part.

We also have a role to play as active citizens in the democracy, including voting and working for the candidates and issues we support. We are not powerless. We have yet to reclaim our power, and not to give it up to any one party or person.

Personally, I believe the blame Obama game is simply a tiresome way of expressing one’s sense of perceived powerlessness, and we need to evolve beyond that. Many have been so seduced by media and corporate owned news that it has trivialized our grasp of fact and even history.

“The Missing Piece Meets the Big O” by William Rivers Pitt

“…Obama has been holding the reins with a Democratically-controlled congress on Capitol Hill for eighteen months, and therefore all eyes tend to fall on him. The problem is that no president in American history has done more damage and screwed us worse than George W. Bush did. In the nearly 3,000 days he spent in office, Bush cut the country to ribbons in ways that have never been seen before, and the impact of that era lingers to this day.

The main reason for our forgetfulness, however, can be found on your television and in the pages of your newspaper. The media has completely redacted the impact of the Bush era from their coverage of the Obama administration, a continuing act of deception that I believe is completely deliberate. The entire Bush administration is a lesson in media cowardice and complicity; they rolled over for him for virtually every one of those 3,000 days, and would now like to have us all forget it happened. If as Bush falls in the forest and the media doesn’t cover it, did it happen? Certainly, but when the daily grind of the 24-hour news cycle omits the idiot elephant that remains in the room, the narrative of the present becomes skewed and distorted.

There are a dozen examples of this available, but the two best also happen to be the two heaviest millstones currently hanging around Obama’s neck: the war in Afghanistan, and the BP oil disaster still unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico.

The recent Wikileaks document dump may not have been a blockbuster on the order of the Pentagon Papers, but it served to underscore how much of a mess the war in Afghanistan is. Pundits on the left and right have taken to call Afghanistan “Obama’s war” - RNC chairman Michael Steele went so far as to claim that Obama was the one who got us into it - even though the war had been going on for almost a decade when he took office. Granted, he’s been commander-in-chief for a year and a half, and his decision to send more troops puts the outcome in Afghanistan right in his hip pocket. This cannot be disputed, but the media coverage of the Wikileaks documents utterly failed to note a fact of singular importance: the discussion of the war described in those documents is focused on George W. Bush’s failed handling of that war. Except in the independent media, the narrative has been “Oooh, these documents show a war going badly, this must be Obama’s fault.” No mention of Bush, the big missing piece in everything we’re dealing with, again.

more:
http://www.truth-out.org/the-missing-piece-meets-big-o61887

As for the Gulf, well, you must have heard by now that it is “Obama’s Katrina.” Beyond the reference to one of the signal debacles of the Bush era, George’s name has hardly come up in the coverage of the BP catastrophe…except it was the Bush administration who fully and completely enabled the elements that led to the disaster in the first place, thanks to their cozy relationship with the oil industry and their passion for deregulating everything that moved.

oops - meant to put that last paragraph in BEFORE the link.

Having followed Hades track from my Moon, to my descendant, and now conjunct my Venus, I have not died. I did note that it wasn’t early Pluto when suddenly 15 years worth of female friends seemingly vanished overnight - it was Hades on my Moon. Because Hades and Pluto were in opposition for years, it took adding this Uranian constructed mathematical point to make sense of the timing of some rather unhappy events.

While the Grand Cross is frightening, having been intimately in it from the word go, I don’t find it life threatening to me, and probably not to Barack Obama either. Hades has a recycling sort of effect. Use up all the junk laying around the garage for years and make something new, with a fresh purpose, from it.

It is certainly a time of change. No one likes change except a baby in a wet diaper…

(CNN) — In protest of what it calls a religion “of the devil,” a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an “International Burn a Quran Day” on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The new division of labor: Adding profits, subtracting workers

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/29/AR2010072906281.html

On the outside of its majestic headquarters in Washington, across the park from the White House, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently hung four giant banners that spell out exactly what it thinks is missing from the current economy: J-O-B-S.

This is a particularly Orwellian bit of political theater, given that it is the private businesses the Chamber purports to represent that eliminated 8 million jobs in 2008 and 2009 and have managed to add a scant 600,000 since then. If Chamber President Tom Donohue wants to round up those responsible for the lack of job growth in this country, all he has to do is call a meeting of his board of directors.

There was a time, not long ago, when real business leaders encouraged these kind of public-private partnerships. If the Chamber of Commerce were as interested in creating jobs as it is in promoting its free-market ideology, it would hang a new message on its columned facade for the president to see:

T-H-A-N-K-S.

Lunagardener,

It’s a simple request, see.
The Chamber of Commerce wants the government to spend money to create jobs, while it shrinks the deficit. Heh.

Lunagardener,

I think nobody read all those documents that were leaked.

Now, finally someone is reading and finding out how screwed up the war is. I can just see them shaking their heads, and muttering: “Oh, crap.”

As I recall….Matthew’s messages quite a while ago suggested that hackers and young law students would be assisting in revealing the truth re: the wars and such….

Lunagardener,

I meant that nobody at the Pentagon read the leaked documents. People write analysis and scenarios because it’s their duty, but nobody reads them. Bureaucrats are great at shuffling papers.

The Chamber of Congress also wants the EPA to withdraw their affirmation of global warming & climate change (I read this yesterday - but am too lazy to look up the link for you).

What is disturbing about the Wikileaks is they apparently divulge the identify of Afghans who are helping the U.S. military and the Taliban are now scoping them out.

An example of trying to fix things. Why has the administration not introduced something similar or supported this if they are so pure? The clear answer: they are not, they are tainted by contributions from the “players”, a different example of “Pay-go”, they pay, the administration goes. Well, some folks have some courage and some convictions:

http://www.zerohedge.com/article/ron-paul-goes-after-secs-foia-exclusivity-introduces-sec-transparency-act

Recent news reports have publicized the little-noticed provision in the recently-passed financial reform package that the Securities and Exchange Commission has used to deny requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act. Paul’s bill would repeal the provision in the newly-passed legislation the SEC has used to deny FOIA requests.

“It is unfortunate, yet not unexpected, that legislation touted as fixing problems with the banking system actually makes them worse and provides more cover and power for organizations that failed us like the SEC and the Fed,” Paul said in introducing the bill. “I expect in the coming weeks and months that many more harmful provisions like this will come to light and it will take quite a bit of work to undo the damage from this massive and misguided legislation.”

Congressman Ron Paul yesterday introduced the SEC Transparency Act of 2010 (HR 5970), a bill designed to force greater transparency in the Securities and Exchange Commission. The bill is designed to repeal the amendments made by section 929I of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act relating to the confidentiality of materials submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Tora, great response on the financial legislation!
It seems to me that BA is one of those old contrarian posters that pops up from time to time attempting to sow discontent whenever and whereever possible. I cannot recall a postive/constructive post from that direction.

Hi Will,

Regarding Bill and Hillary’s elaborate (ostentatious?) wedding for their daughter Chelsea…. most of us ex-hippies (or those aspiring towards a different perspective back in the ’60’s) were infused with a sense of idealism and unbounded energy - see photo: http://americandigest.org/bill_hillary_hippies.jpg

I suspect over time the inexorable reality of things can teach us an important lesson - take yourself too seriously and you risk losing sight of the bigger picture. I have full confidence the current, unfolding Uranus-Pluto-Saturn t square will extricate us out of the rut.

I don’t know if there will be a counterprotest to the book burning, but there needs to be!

http://www.outsourcing-offshore.com/foreign.html

Unfortunately, those impressive economy-wide benefits are overshadowed in the political arena by concerns about job losses. A recent update of the much-cited 2002 study by Forrester Research Inc. projects that the number of US jobs outsourced abroad will increase from an estimated cumulative total of 315,000 in 2003 to 3.4 million by 2015. That would mean an average of 257,000 additional jobs outsourced each year.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-07-29/most-pakistanis-view-u-s-as-enemy-want-war-over-survey-finds.html

Two-thirds of Pakistanis oppose the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan and roughly six in 10 think the U.S. is an enemy, according to a new survey.

The above underlines the narrative of the Wikileaks documents that our allies in this war are barely allies and that the war is in far worse shape than we had hoped.

I have good opinion of the Clintons, but I see the them as regular people, making it through hard work, sweat and tears. They are human in every respect, even their foibles. Maybe that’s part of what I like about them. One is born into royalty, and I’m glad the time of royalty is over.

All: Richard Nolle outdoes himself in his August 2010 Forecast. There may be food for discussion …and he concludes “So relax, be of good cheer…”

http://www.astropro.com/forecast/predict/2010-08.html

“What changes this month is not the problem, but the response. So far, governments and central banks have concentrated on triage; stopping the hemorrhaging. No real attempt has been made to get the patient healthy again, only to stop him from dying outright immediately. And in reality, nobody really knows how to fix this situation, because no one has ever seen the like of it. No one has lived through the end of one civilization and the birth of another, such has happened at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. We’re going to blindly stumble through this one the way we stumbled through that last metamorphosis. Whatever is done to save the system as it is amounts to throwing money down a bottomless pit. It’s like trying to save the whip and buggy industry at the dawn of the auto age; or trying to save the long distance passenger trains at the dawn of the jet age.

So relax, be of good cheer, pay attention, and capitalize on the new age as it reveals itself – as it will begin to do more and more with Venus Max getting underway this month on the 20th. Do not expect an overnight outbreak of universal prosperity and full employment. The soufflé won’t be done settling for a good ten years yet. This isn’t a miracle. It’s a break in the storm clouds. Keep a sharp eye peeled for those bright spots. They’re good for the soul even if they don’t manage to put an end to troubling times. And what with this Venus Max starting out under a Venus-Mars conjunction, this is good for the soul in so many ways – a time of passion and excitement, all sexy and festive-feeling. There are babies to make and parties to throw, fancy-dress clothes to buy and décor that needs done; a stimulus package that starts from animal spirits rather than government incentives . . . especially from the 14th through the end of August, with Mars and Venus being only a few degree or less apart in the sky. (The feel-good outbreak will likely kick in on the week of the 10th, the 13th in particular under a slew of lunar alignments and on the heels of the Perseids meteor shower peaking.) “

Me too Deborah. This one is great!

Courts clear Al Gore over groping, assault allegations
District Attorney will not prosecute the former Nobel winner per masseuse’s accusations

The case of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and the massage therapist has been closed.

Former Vice President Al Gore was cleared Friday of allegations he groped and assaulted a masseuse in a luxury Portland hotel room in 2006.

A story in a tabloid newspaper led to a monthlong investigation that found no basis for prosecution on claims by Molly Hagerty, who had waited more than two years before giving detectives a statement they initially concluded “did not merit further inquiry.”

Gore aides welcomed the news.

“Mr. Gore unequivocally and emphatically denied this accusation when he first learned of its existence three years ago,” spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said in a statement. “He respects and appreciates the thorough and professional work of the Portland authorities and is pleased that this matter has now been resolved.”

Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk announced the case was closed Friday with the release of a memo that cited “contradictory evidence, conflicting witness statements, credibility issues, lack of forensic evidence and denials by Mr. Gore.”

One final word about Chelsea’s wedding. It’s clear that it was a simple private affair. Expensive, but nothing exceptional. I read somewhere that most of the guests were in their 20s and 30s. LAT reports:

“Face Stockholm, a makeup store in Rhinebeck, quietly groomed several wedding guests in back. Megan Martino, a manager at the store, said the guests had not wanted anything fancy.

“They all wanted a very simple, natural country look,” Martino said.

A number of guests were staying in town at the Looking Glass Bed & Breakfast. The owner, Cari Metzer, said that over breakfast people going to the wedding were all talking about the lack of fancy frills in the weekend’s plans.

“There are no horse-drawn carriages or anything like that,” Metzer said. “Chelsea just wanted to have a nice, normal wedding.”"

Deborah - Your Richard Nolle post left me feeling good. Thanks!

I haven’t paid much attention to the Chelsie Clinton wedding, but I did feel my heart chakra open up wide when I saw the photo’s. She is so beautiful and happy. She has had so many ugly newspaper photographs to deal with as she grew up, I am relieved she gets to have beautiful photo’s to share with the world this morning.

A Paradise Lost

A few still remember an idyllic, self-sufficient Delacroix, but those memories are vanishing as quickly as the wetlands

“Everything changed so fast,” Serigne said, surveying the empty lots and ruined boats along the bayou. “Of course, looking back with the information we have now, we can see how it all happened.

“It was the canals — the oil company canals, and the MR-GO. Back in the ’50s, we could see difference in the way the tide was coming in and out. Faster. Stronger. By the ’60s, we could see the marsh starting to eat out.

“Then came Betsy in ‘65. Then Katrina. Now it’s gone. Hard to believe.

“Now when I talk to the younger people about it, they think it’s a story.”

It’s a story worth retelling.

I have been fascinated by the extreme interest in the Versailles-on-the-Hudson nuptials. I am amazed that even on this blog, which has the most intelligent commentary I read anywhere on the web. (I come to this page for “dessert”, when I have the time to savor the commentary and explore the amazing links), there is this Clinton worship and “oh isn’t Chelsea a beautiful woman” drivel.

Let’s get it straight. The Clinton’s are probably still pissed the wedding could not have been held in the White House. Their legacy is dubious at best. I still can’t believe PBO named Hillary to any post at all, given her campaign of lies and racism. Bill is a slimeball, and gave us NAFTA and rhe repeal of Glass-Stiega and his Goldman Sachs possel, which helped create the huge economic mess we are now in. Chelsea, who had the advantage of the best education anyone could hope to have, took that and became a hedge fund manager. A crook by any other name. And the family she is marrying into is equally scuzzy, at least the father and son piece of it. The only thing I can’t figure out is how and why Chelsea got an MPH from the Mailman School. I guess if you can pay the tuition there is a spot for you. What in the world could her interest in public health be? The real public health issues facing the world are in large part due to the profit-making practices of the large corporations she and her hubby are making money from. Every child who is making our shoes and the clothes on our backs and being paid slave wages while most likely going hungry and living in dangerously (from a “public health” standpoint) substandard conditions adds to the profits these people rake in. Yeah, I can’t quite figure that one out. It makes a much sense as Hillary becoming the carpetbagger Senator from NY State.

Nancy,

Would you have a chart on file for Rupert Murdoch?
His “star” seems to be rising, there are rumors he may buy the Texas Rangers baseball franchise, and personally, I can’t stand Fox news, while I know little about Murdoch himself.
Murdoch was born in Australia on 11th of March, 1931

Catsand music,

Clinton did indeed give us NAFTA, with the support of the republican party - and my family’s income was cut by 1/3 within 6 months of it, as my husband’s profession was affected by the changes in trade. And he did repeal Glass Steagal, again with the support of the republican party. But compared to GWB, I think Clinton left office with an only partly fabricated budget surplus. (there has been fabrication in unemployment numbers and actual funds going back to at least the first Bush, if not Reagan in 1980).

Personally I don’t care who the heck gets married or how lovely their wedding is - I’m not a big fan of matrimony. And hedge fund managers are all suspect - I heard the boy’s background on msnbc on Friday I think. But what the heck, have a nice wedding not a media circus…

(I’m one of those old-timers like BA who comes back periodically just to stir things up, and the rest of the site is not quite sure what to say to me I guess. On those rare days when I have time for internet leisure. Since it is 102 outdoors, I made time to cool off…)

catsandmusic,

Your rant made me laugh-out-loud. Yes, the Clintons have made their big boo-boos, no doubt - but I’ll take their character flaws any day compared to most in camp Rethug. Bill and Hill are, unquestionably progressive and highly intelligent. In the long run, they’ve done a great deal of good. And although “Versailles on the Hudson” grossed me out too, I can’t allow it to obscure all of the good the Clintons have done.

Check out the wonderful link Pat C. posted today for Bill Clinton’s commencement speech a few months ago for Yale’s grads. You might get an answer as to why Chelsea got her MPH. Its worth a listen as it reminded me of how important it is to have very bright people in public office. Their intelligence, with a few exceptions , always makes our country and public policies better.

Wiki-Tiki-Tavi? The Mongoose Is Loose

n our United States of Amnesia there is a thin, carefully manufactured line between truth and spin, between real and computer-generated and, apparently, between heroes and traitors.

Blowing the whistle used to be a good thing. On the schoolyard or in the middle of a busy intersection, the yard duty and traffic cop used the whistle to kept us safe. The ear piercing sound meant, “Stop, before someone gets hurt!”

The fact is, today’s heroes are the whistleblowers. We’ve learned about corruption in our banking and investment firms because of them. We learned about BP’s reckless disregard for the environment because of them. We’ve learned about Pentagon waste, Abu Ghraib, domestic spying, and on and on and on.

Each time, someone blew the whistle to stop us from hurting the innocent, the environment and, in some cases, the Constitution.

Sadly, we rely on these whistleblowers to do the job reporters used to do when they took the time to blow the whistles they found hanging on the Fourth Branch. Now, we rely on brave citizens to do that job and they do so at great risk to their families, their careers and their health. Remember Karen Silkwood? Remember when those tobacco executives raised their right hands and swore on the Bible that their chemically enhanced tobacco was not addictive? A whistleblower sounded the alarm.

In covert America, a society now built upon distrust of everyone and everything, our government consistently lets us down by leaving us unprotected … kowtowing to corporations instead of blowing the whistle on them. The traffic cops of industry who used to man federal regulatory agencies have been replaced by lobbyists from the very industries the government was supposed to monitor.

But, seriously, what good have the Clintons ever done? Yes, they can talk the talk, courtesy of a talented speechwriter And throwing out a little largesse does not make up for policies that deprive people of their livelihoods.

Gypsi,

I’ve read in many blogs outright fiction about Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. that I find myself repeating the facts so that maybe someday, people will stop repeating them, like the untruth that Gore said he invented the internet.
Here are the facts. 1. The repeal of Glass-Steagall was spearheaded by Gramm, who most know was no friend of the Clintons. So to even imagine that Clinton would approach Gramm to repeal Glass-Steagall is far fetched, imo.

2. The House voted 362-57, and the Senate 90-8. The vote was was overwhelming. Democrats did their best to put protections in the bill to avoid a bill that was tilted 100 percent against consumers. This was a GOP bill that Democrats joined, as you can see by the vote. The signing of the bill by the president was irrelevant. Had Bill vetoed the bill, it would have been an exercise in futility because it would have been overridden.

3. Let’s assume that it was Bill’s sell out to the banking industry, as many put forth. For ten years, not even when we know the banking system was failing in 2006, the Democrats try to correct the problem. I’m not talking about passing anything because the GOP would not have allowed it. I’m saying that the Ds didn’t speak out, as when a fire is about to explode. For 10 years Congress and of course G.W. did nothing. I have my own views about why, but it’s conjecture.

I think what we need to see is clearly that in 1999 Clinton had very little power, of his own doing, I’ll admit, and that the GLB Act should be put at the feet of Congress, mostly the GOP, but with the help of the Ds.

The wikipedia has a good history about the passing of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Those names say it all: GOP through and through.

Bill Clinton was the best president in my lifetime. I’m tired of the rampant CDS within the Ds, who often repeat the GOP attacks ignoring or twisting the facts. Logic says that a president who’s been out of office for 10 years is not responsible, even if he made mistakes because the next administration and Congress should do everything in their power to change course. There were lots of problems with the direction Reagan had taken us, but Clinton did a darn good job at moving us into the right direction, and with little or no help from the Ds in congress, blaming the Clintons for the polarization of the 90s. The unity schtick could only exist in the dream of the 2008 election.

I forgot to post the link to the wikipedia link to the GLB Act.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLB_Act

Prabhata - I had the misfortune of being mis-represented by Phil Gramm. I’m in Texas, with an idiot count higher than some countries.
If you read what I posted, it should have said yes, Glass-Steagal was repealed under Clinton because the republicans held both houses and wanted it repealed. What it did say was it was repealed WITH the help of the Republicans.

Now, I agree that Clinton was a good president, certainly the best one since I got the right to vote..

But I seem to remember him out there pitching for NAFTA - and that was a fiasco that is still running.

Either he or George Bush the First, also allowed the chinese access to US markets and lowered the tariff on incoming goods from china and southeast asia, which put about 25% to 50% of U.S. electronics repair techs out of work, because why fix it if you can buy a new one almost as cheaply. My ex-husband was a tech. Still is. It pays maybe half what it did prior to the lowering of that trade barrier that was going to boost the economy. I was a bit busy raising 3 children at the time. We had a bump in 1989, and we had a bad bump in around 92 or 93, I think that was on Clinton’s watch.
Going back to 102 degree weather, I’m working outdoors with a deadline. (Or I’d look up who done what)

I forgot to mention the good things that Clinton did. He balanced the budget and created a surplus. It was not fun, he made many enemies, and all they could find to hang him with was Monica Lewinski.

I also seem to remember old Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America” being a part of why Clinton was hog-tied for his last 4 years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I wonder how many republican voters remember how that one turned out.

It was more like a contract ON America, and it still is. This is nothing less than a hostile takeover of a country by corporations and their political minions.

Nancy,
Current news re tensions in Greece…you probably know this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/01/greece-war-zone-revolutionaries-tourists

Gypsi, the Democrats were in a majority during the early Clinton years, but midterms pared down their numbers in 1994 with the arrival of Gingrich and the Contract on America. There were major budget deficits from the Reagan years because of government de-regulation during Reagan Bush, and then Bush Quayle, all of which led to no new taxes. Years of Reagan-Bush still make centrist Dems wary of programs funding the social contract.

Congress saw during the early nineties that they had to reduce the deficit. I remember that quite well. There were democratic congressional delegations trying to work with Clinton to make sure there were deficit reductions and welfare reform included in every new program. Mandatory sentencing laws changed to imprison more of the poor, mostly African American. The prison industrial complex became a boon industry during the Clinton years, but it was not Clinton, but Congress’s doing.

Clinton had two great things working in his favor: the slow down of military spending because of the end of the Cold War sparked by the fall of communism, and program redundancy elimination by Al Gore and the Office of the Vice President. Clinton also imposed higher tax rates on those who could afford them–the rich, but also included tax incentives for job training programs for wealthy manufacturers to stimulate re-training for industries soon to be made obsolete in the Rust Belt.

As for NAFTA, it was an imperfect instrument, for sure, but one of its boons was increased economic development in nations which are now part of the G20, instead of formerly the G7, which meant their regions were stabilizing in Latin America, Northern Africa, Central Asia and Russia. The boon was obvious to get former enemies and their satellites in as trading partners in a post Cold War world.

The one thing NAFTA did, and this was a critical oversight, was standardizing regulation of environmental impacts and wage and trading standards. There was no equivalent to America’s requirements for labor and the environment, which ultimately led to America businesses locating overseas and shipping jobs to where labor was cheaper.

Finally, the Project for the New America Century was also started just around 1994, in response to the end of the Cold War and the re-shaping of global foreign policy by neoconservatives like Doug Feith, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Bibi Netanyahu. It took three years for them to construct their game plan leading to a must-win election by Republicans after Clinton left office in 2000.

This is why I believe the first false flag event of this country was not 9-11 but the impeachment of Bill Clinton. It was, as Maya Angelou aptly named it, a “coup de tat’, binding a President and his party, and assuring his Democratic successor would not be allowed to take the reins in 2000. The economic and foreign policy pressures and opportunities were too good to miss, not with the world poised to make millions for these greedy bastards, taking advantage of tax breaks and weakened standards, doomed to be weakened further still by Republican “majorities” in Congress.

And this, after ten years of Bush, 16 years of Gingrich and 30 years of Reagan, is the economic, ecological, and legal heap that Obama and the Democrats have to now clean up.

History takes a while to reverse itself. The most important thing is to never forget it, or let others try to obscure it.

Nancy:

Before I forget, I wanted to post up this Kos diary about Reagan’s former director of the Office of Management and Budget - David Stockman, who says Reagan’s policies caused the current meltdown and warns of the GOP trying to re-package Reaganism in the present day:

Terrific observations. The attempted impeachment of Clinton was indeed, a coup de tat. I believe the first coup de tat in our generation was the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

A Paradise Lost
A few still remember an idyllic, self-sufficient Delacroix, but those memories are vanishing as quickly as the wetlands

Between Clinton’s speech at Yale and Nolle’s August forecast (have never seen him write like this before) it has been an uplifting day. I encourage you all to indulge.

The narrative, whenever we talk about Clinton, if inaccurate, will influence the views of those who are 25 younger. They were children when Clinton left, and all they have known is G.W., the worst president in my lifetime. Like the economy, we went from being a powerful economic power, to an anemic one, all in 10 years.

Yes. Gypsi, you are right about NAFTA. It was a H.W.B. creation to counter the coming European market. Bill Clinton bought the idea from H.W.B., and pushed for congress to approve. Not all of NAFTA is bad though. I’m not sure that NAFTA is the reason we’re in the current dire economic situation.

Bottom line is that we agree on the basics. I’m simply watching that the narrative of blaming the Clintons for what the Democratic leadership is responsible for, being shifted to the Clintons. The Republicans don’t accuse the Clintons of abolishing the Glass-Steagall, that’s responsible for our economic catastrophe. The Republicans are happy that the Ds accuse Clinton of that responsibility. But that narrative is wrong. The Ds should be blaming the GOP, but if they did, the GOP would say: “You voted for it, and your president signed it.”

The changes in the bankruptcy laws in G.W.’s presidency with the help of the Ds in congress could not have been possible. Privatize is the word, even the old army duties, now performed by Blackwater.

Public option? Never campaigned for it.

NAFTA + CAFTA = HAFTA relocate to work.

Prabhata:

The Cintons will always be blamed, as if to block out the years of prosperity under a Democratic president is somehow a poisonous form of socialism.

The DoD under Clinton’s SecDef William Casey did privatize some of the functions of the military in the face of fewer recruits and less action on the military front, but nothing on the scale of what the Cheney Bush Administration did. They basically gave away the bank to Cheney’s favored companies.

Chnage the first paragraph to read:

The Cintons will always be blamed, as if to block out the years of prosperity under a Democratic president AS somehow a poisonous form of socialism.

Fe,

Thank you for laying the facts during the Clinton administration so well.

Fe,
Let me correct that last sentence.

Thank you for laying the facts of the Clinton administration.

(”during” is totally the wrong proposition, I’ll have to go back to ESL if I’m not careful)

Fe - thank you.

Having a set of twins and a singleton 8 years younger meant I scraped together the time to vote, but mainly I worked, raised kids and paid bills.

Now I just work, raise critters, and pay bills, but I am trying to keep up a little better, and I sign a ton of petitions on current events THAT I HAVE TIME TO UNDERSTAND. (I don’t sign the free internet ones - don’t entirely know what they are talking about.)

“In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem.”, so declared RR. Socialism (FDR is accused of being a socialist) is bad, privatization, is good.

Fe, your eloquence is a pleasure to read.

When I ask my guides about this particular passage of time, particularly with regard to these cosmic signifiers I continue to hear that its all about “water”. That is a little confusing to me because the signs involved are not water signs (although Cancer is the missing ‘leg’ of the T-square which lends it weight). Water has already proved to be a big issue, from severe droughts to major flood events around the world to the Gulf spill and melting polar caps, so its not a big stretch to project that into the near future as part of the cleansing period represented by these planets. And perhaps we’ll also be seeing more volatility regarding water ownership issues as well.

At any rate, just thought I’d mention it since it continues to emerge from the deeps.

Zea,

Maybe it’s a koan: “It’s all about water”.

zea, no accident that I got a grant last year to paint a series of water paintings! Still working on it.

Now for some good news and in my estimation what the T-Square energy is all about.

Renewable Energy at the Tipping Point

No longer a mere suggestion of what might be, renewable energy is hitting a tipping point, with far-reaching implications. For the first time, understanding the scale and patterns of renewable energy development has become essential to any full analysis of trends that will shape the global energy economy and the health of the planet.
That is the story told by a new report that the Worldwatch Institute helped research and write: the Renewables Global Status Report 2010. Produced by the REN21 network of governments, NGOs, and industry associations, the report paints a remarkable picture of a booming new economic sector that has powered its way through a deep global recession, emerging stronger than ever.

Buoyed by hundreds of new government energy policies, accelerating private investment, and myriad technology advances over the past five years, renewable energy is breaking into the mainstream of energy markets. Over the past two years, the United States and Europe have both added more power capacity from renewables than from coal, gas, and nuclear combined, according to the report. Worldwide, renewables accounted for one-third of the new generating capacity added.

I truly believe we are at the end of the ‘Age of Oil’ and entering a completely new paradigm. As we have seen with the Gulf spill and several others around the country and the world recently this cannot come soon enough.

My understanding, Pat C, is that Fox was given a front row seat not in the center and that agency that was there was given Helen’s seat. And NPR was moved up to Fox’s old seat in the second row. Think that was in the WaPo.

Fox didn’t get it.

From CREDO

“On Wednesday we asked: Should the White House Correspondents Association let FOX News have the best seat in the White House press briefing room and the legitimacy that it confers?
Your answer was a resounding “Hell no!”
In just four days, over 311,000 CREDO Action members and 180,000 MoveOn members — over 491,000 people — petitioned the board of the White House Correspondents Association and asked them not to give the best seat in the White House press briefing room to the rightwing noise machine’s key propaganda outlet.
Just hours ago the board of the White House Correspondents Association met and decided not to give the seat to FOX.
There was clearly strong internal bias towards giving the seat to FOX. CNN reporter and WHCA board member Ed Henry publicly pledged to cast his vote for FOX before our campaign launched. And after we delivered the first 150,000 petition signatures, board member Julie Mason complained to an insider DC blog that “the reporters, producers and photographers from Fox News assigned to the White House are some of the best and well respected in the business” and furthermore accused us of “smearing” her “colleagues.”1
While we’re disappointed that the seat did not go to NPR, we’re delighted the board found a way to avoid giving the coveted front row center seat to FOX. No doubt our pressure made a huge difference.”

Oy.

Regarding President Obama and the question of whether or nor a public option was a part of his campaign promises, Lawence O’Donnell does a great job of showing that he did in fact support the public option. Most of us knew it was simply a tactic to differentiate himself from HRC. It simply depended on what constituency he was campaining in front of, to hear him state his preference for a public option; take a look:

By the way, I am not an Obama basher like B.A. I was not a Hillary supporter either. I just see things as they are, not as I wish they would be. That being the case, I will still do everything in my power to prevent Republicans from getting anywhere near the Oval Office in 2012.

I continue to hold onto Nancy’s forecast that Obama will start to come out of his “dark” period at the end of summer and then go on to become respected and loved and he will have a second turn and will get a lot accomplished. I have it from another very progressive friend that she agrees and so that is the forecast and I love it and I am sharing it to brighten and lighten these days of tension and discord and crazy GOP antics and a popular media run by ravening wolves.

Bette,
For me, the movie “Inception” had very deep meanings, Buddhist meanings, about how the mind works, and its many subconscious levels. It’s a great movie. As Zen Buddhist now for over 15 years, I can attest that everything is in the mind. Programming, when we are young, is the deepest, most difficult programming to release. Most propaganda is simply reaching into the subconscious and making us recall what’s already there. That’s why fear of the unknown, almost nonexistent in children, is so powerful. It’s good our parents put certain fears because they cannot watch us 24/7, but sometimes the mind cannot differentiate correctly and fears can become irrational.

Virginia’s Cuccinelli Rules It’s OK For Police To Check Immigration Status

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) issued an official opinion that Virginia police officers can follow in Arizona’s footsteps and ask for immigration status on routine stops.

The opinion comes in the form of a letter sent on Friday to state Delegate Bob Marshall, a Northern Virginia Republican who is among the legislature’s most conservative members. Marshall has long sought stricter measures to ensure illegal immigrants receive no taxpayer-funded services.

Marshall asked Cuccinelli, who took office this January as the state’s top law enforcement official, if Virginia police have the same authority to ask about people’s immigration status as Arizona officers do under the state’s new law. Marshall also asked if that authority extends to state park personnel and local zoning officials, likely because of his opposition to day laborer pickup spots that can be targeting for zoning violations.

And now a solar CME ads to the picture…

On Sunday, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory detected a complex magnetic eruption on the sun. The NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) also spotted a large coronal mass ejection (CME) The eruption happened around (3:50 am EST), the SDO detected a C3 class solar flare originating from a group of sunspots (called sunspot 1092). The flare itself was not that large, but the filament located about 70,000 miles away erupted at the same time.
A filament is a large, bright feature extending outward from the Sun’s surface, often in a loop shape. Filament is anchored to the Sun’s surface in the photosphere, and extends outward into the Sun’s corona. It is a long magnetic structure rising above the surface of the sun, filled with cool plasma. The flare and filament erupted at the same time, this suggests they are connected by long-range magnetic field lines. Some believe the flare may have accelerated the eruption of the filament. Eventually, a giant magnetic bubble of plasma broke and blasted out into space.

The problem is, the eruption occurred on the side of the sun facing earth which means, the Coronal Mass Ejection is on its way to the planet earth. It’s expected arrival is Aug. 3. This is known as a geomagnetic storm, and they have been known to cause electrical power outages and damage communications satellites. They drive shock waves which produce energetic particles that can be damaging to both electronic equipment and astronauts that venture outside the protection of the Earth’s magnetic field.

BP Executive Turned Alyeska Pipeline Into “Deeply Distressed” Company

Alyeska Pipeline, the BP-led consortium that operates the 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), has implemented deep budget cuts, deferred work on a number of important maintenance and upgrade projects, failed to study how relocating engineers would impact the safe operations and long-term integrity of the pipeline and is led by a chief executive who was described by the company’s five vice presidents as “intimidating,” “demeaning,” “aggressive,” “confrontational,” “unpredictable,” “polarizing,” “withering,” “edgy,” “vulgar” and “inappropriate.”

Those are just some of the critical findings contained in a closely-held report, obtained exclusively by Truthout, that was prepared by two attorneys hired by Alyeska to investigate widespread safety concerns raised by a senior employee in an anonymous letter to BP’s Office of the Ombudsman alleging TAPS is vulnerable to a catastrophic spill.

Lorrie U — LOL!!!

Prabhata - OK, I will go see Inception.

Hooray Starlight!

I mentioned before that China would benefit from the Iran sanctions. FT has an article about the problem:

US tells China not to exploit sanctions on Iran

Washington has told China to stop taking advantage of the UN sanctions regime against Iran by seizing opportunities left by departing European companies.

China last month condemned moves by the European Union to ratchet up sanctions against Tehran’s nuclear programme by hitting transport, energy and finance. Iran is the third biggest oil supplier to China, and Beijing is investing heavily in the Islamic republic’s energy fields and refineries.

“We want China to be a responsible stakeholder in the international system and that means co-operating with UN Security Council resolutions,” Robert Einhorn, US special adviser for non-proliferation and arms control, said on Monday on a trip to Seoul. “It means not backfilling, not taking advantage of the responsible self-restraint of other countries.”

Mr Einhorn conceded China had a “large and genuine” need for energy security, but said a priority of his visit to Beijing later this month would be to persuade the country to pull out of Iran because of sanctions.

“One concern that a number of countries expressed when approached to take measures against Iran is that ‘if we practise restraint, China will fill in behind, China will take advantage of our restraint’,” Mr Einhorn told reporters in Seoul.

China is already a crucial partner for Iran as European companies have quit major projects, particularly the massive South Pars gas fieldbeneath the waters of the Gulf. Royal Dutch Shell, Repsol, OMV and Total had pursued projects there but the only foreign investor remaining is China National Petroleum Corporation.

The South Pars gas field had been particularly prized because of the lucrative potential of converting it into liquefied natural gas. Foreign oil companies say they were ultimately deterred from investing not only by sanctions but also by poor contractual terms and the purging of technocrats from Iran’s state energy companies.

The US has targeted gasoline imports as Tehran’s Achilles heel. While western companies have cut off their exports to Iran, Beijing not only ships petrol to Iran but is also committed to help expand refinery capacity. Iran is the second biggest crude oil producer in the Opec oil cartel but it lacks refinery capacity. Hossein Noghrehkar, a deputy oil minister, said last week that Chinese investment in the energy sector totalled $40bn and that Tehran and Beijing were considering constructing seven refineries.

DPH - Thanks for posting that. I had no idea! Wow! Now let’s just hope I am right. These midterm elections are always hard to predict, and the House prediction is not that clear. The Senate I am far more sure of our keeping. I am reminded of my predicting that the GOP would lose the Senate in 2004 based on Trent Lott having some serious Saturn transits. He looked really unhappy. And what happened? The GOP kept the Senate, but Trent Lott got into huge trouble for wishing Strom Thurmond had won the presidency way back when. He lost his leadership position and was very upset. So random things have a way of confusing the issue sometimes. We will see what happens.

Squall,
Wow. Thanks for the link. I watched the video. Physicist Michio Kaku’s prediction of a sun storm in 2012 with cataclysmic potential gives me pause. I’m afraid the government is not going to heed his advice. Here is what Wikipedia says about that the sun storm of 1859:

On September 1–2, 1859, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm occurred. Aurorae were seen around the world, most notably over the Caribbean; also noteworthy were those over the Rocky Mountains that were so bright, the glow awoke gold miners, who began preparing breakfast because they thought it was morning.[3]
Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed.[4] Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems appeared to continue to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies.

Starlight, I was thinking of you as I watched that interview. I knew you might not like it.

I think he was expressing the continuation of the permanent war thinking that has been part of the thinking since the long years of Republican rule. Clinton was such an exception as Presidents go. With the exception of NAFTA, I thought Clinton was awesome. But as much as I admire him, the fact that he became such good friends with Bush the elder, has always caused me pause.

My apologies for the poor writing in that post. It’s early, and hopefully my brain will engage soon.

Look for Static Kill Delay Again: New Leak Just Seen on Video Feed

Pat C,
Stating the obvious that I don’t know why the Clintons would be friendly to the Bush, I think the Clintons, both of them, look ahead. Both of them understand that being small doesn’t help anybody. But being friendly in the work arena doesn’t mean the Bushes or others who disparaged them are close. Many politicians would have invited people to their child’s wedding for political reasons, but the Clintons didn’t take that path. The guests to Chelsea’s wedding were their true, close friends. I respect them for that.

I remember you addressing the effect of US pr Mars retro quite some time ago - it stood/stands in relief as quite relevant with respect to the last few years of military failures/foibles and dead-ends. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to stop policing the whole world and focusing on getting our own democracy back in working order.

Didn’t Deutschland (Germany) have progressed Mars retrograde from about 1914 forward? Look where it got them. I mean, 80-some years later, you could chart an evolution toward something less bellicose, but there was a lot of pain in getting there.

‘Cold as ice’ Conn. beer driver kills 8, self

MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — A driver caught stealing beer from the warehouse where he worked agreed to resign his job Tuesday and then as “cold as ice,” one of his victims said, went on a shooting rampage, killing eight people and injuring two before committing suicide.

Omar Thornton pulled out a handgun after a meeting in which he was shown video evidence of the thefts and was offered the chance to quit or be fired.

“Then he went out on this rampage,” company vice president Steve Hollander told The Associated Press. “He was cool and calm. He didn’t yell. He was cold as ice. He didn’t protest when we were meeting with him to show him the video of him stealing. He didn’t contest it. He didn’t complain. He didn’t argue. He didn’t admit or deny anything. He just agreed to resign. And then he just unexplainably pulled out his gun and started blasting.”

BP embarked Tuesday on an operation that could seal the biggest offshore oil leak in U.S. history once and for all, forcing mud down the throat of its blown-out well in a tactic known variously as “bullheading” or a “static kill.”

The pressure in the well dropped quickly in the first 90 minutes of the procedure, a sign that everything was going as planned, wellsite leader Bobby Bolton told The Associated Press aboard the Q4000, the vessel being used to pump in the mud. Hours later, Bolton told the AP that the procedure was still going well.

Is the Middle East on the Brink of Another War?

Time Magazine
August 3, 2010

Tuesday’s cross-border firefight between Israeli and Lebanese government forces might simply have been a misunderstanding. And the rockets fired from Gaza and the Israeli air strikes on the besieged border territory over the past week could be viewed as periodic blips in business as usual on that front. By the same token, last Friday’s unprecedented joint visit to Beirut by the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Syria could be viewed simply as a move to stop the conflict between their Lebanese proxies from turning nasty. And British Prime Minister David Cameron’s pleas to Turkey to keep open its communication channels with Israel’s leaders are quotidian diplomatic common sense. Viewed in a wider context, however, each of those events could be signs of why many in the Middle East believe that despite the outward calm, the region may be on the brink of another catastrophic war.

Astrological Report On The Situation In Israel
(dated June 2, 2010)

Following the recent, alarming event, charts were drawn up for Israel to see what is happening, and what is coming up. These charts include progressed, directed, mundane, and horary charts.

The progressed and directed charts for Israel show Mars at 29 degrees Virgo and Libra, respectively. This means that Israel is out of patience and is apt to act precipitously. Then, the progressed chart has Mars at 29 degrees Virgo conjunct the progressed Mid-Heaven showing the government at the end of its tether. Progressed Mars will move to 00 degrees Libra in 2011 to 2012 to bring the country into a new phase in foreign relations. Still, foreign affairs will be in a critical condition for at least three or four more years. The converse progressed Ascendant is conjunct Mars this year bringing the country to emergencies and violent confrontations. Directed Jupiter is in opposition with Mars this year. This brings martial excitement to the country. The converse progressed Mid-Heaven is conjunct the star Algol this year giving victory in war if it comes to that. Algol, however, is unfortunate for the current government.

Transiting Neptune has been conjunct Israel’s Mars from April 10th this year and will stay in conjunction with Mars until July 24th allowing chaotic conditions and unanticipated violence to come about. Transiting Mars comes to opposition Neptune on June 3rd and 4th. We can expect an event of a violent, explosive nature to take place then. It is probable there will be a terrorist attack. Later, on July 28th and 29th, we find transiting Mars coming to conjunction progressed Mars for more violence.

Why I Was Angry
By ANTHONY WEINER

No offense kiwijeanie, From my perception it wasn’t a feel good article, I’m just trying to raise the level of awareness from the inside viewpoint of someone who works professionally in the art field. That people are rushing to buy this boys paintings is only another facet, a symptom of the general lack of critical thinking in the populace. ( Teabaggers redoux!)
I taught a 10 year old boy with Asbergers, at the Bangor YWCA, 9 years ago, he painted like Van Gogh, beautiful stuff. His Mother was amazed because he chattered to me nonstop. She said he NEVER TALKS TO ANYONE! His “normal” fellow students were pretty brilliant too. I predicted an Art renaissance 10 years ago when I was doing that teaching.
I NEVER had a problem selling paintings, until the Repug propaganda/ Grover Norquist, took hold in 1989-90………NOW I am asked constantly to DONATE paintings to some auction for some physical infirmity. GIVE AWAY 2/3 weeks of hard work, while paying the electric company, fuel dealers, art supply dealers, food manufacturers & subsequent middle men, etc. on my, way too small, insufficient SS income, put up with inadequate, inefficient, equipment made in China
I wasted one whole afternoon weed whacking the lawn, ( I am opening my Gallery next week & I can’t afford $250, to replace my lawn mower)) and only getting 1/4 of the job done, because in their infinite wisdom they don’t manufacture a simple string replacement spool you can drop in, so you have to wind the stiff unbending plastic string around the spool, yourself. Meanwhile this boy’s Mother cooks his meals & does all those things while he makes his masterpieces!
I have good health, and own my home ( such as it is and if I can keep it, pay property taxes,) and my 28 yeaR OLD CAR STILL RUNS…….) BUT I am in my Jupiter return year! ( 28o pisces! lucky me!)
Hate this T sq!

Pat, I have often felt the same and in regard to the publishing world where the likes of Sarah Puke Palin or others of the same ilk are romanced by agents and publishers. The superficiality of the media reflects — in many cases — a corporate conjuring of “feel good” pablum. That is not to say, Kiwi, that this young man is not superbly talented. Rather it is the way his art may be being exploited by those who are disingenuous.

Nancy said:

“These midterm elections are always hard to predict, and the House prediction is not that clear. We will see what happens.”

I want to remind all of us how difficult mid term elections are to predict and what Nancy said in this regard above.

Moss versus machines: On the fifth anniversary of the death of election protection activist Bill Moss, news reports easy hacking of ATM machines and hence, electronic voting machines
Bob Fitrakis

http://www.freepress.org/columns/display/3/2010/1843

It is fitting on the fifth anniversary of the death of Bill Moss, lead plaintiff in the legendary Moss v. Bush 2004 lawsuit in Ohio, that the Associated Press is admitting the easy hackability of Diebold machines.

“A hacker has discovered a way to force ATMs to disgorge their cash by hijacking the computers inside them,” reads the AP lead.

The AP goes on to warn that, “The attacks demonstrated last week targeted stand-alone ATMs. But they could potentially could be used against the ATMs operated by mainstream banks.”

What the Associated Press and corporate for-profit media fail to report is that Diebold, one of the world’s leading ATM hardware and sofware providers, also manufactures electronic voting machines with similar problems.

The similarities between hacking a Diebold ATM and a Diebold/Premier election machine are startling. For example, the hacker, Barnaby Jack, Director of Security Testing for Seattle based IOActive, Inc., stated “Every ATM I’ve looked at, I’ve been able to find a flaw in. It’s a scary thing.”

It’s even scarier that all major studies of electronic voting machines have found the same flaws.

The AP tells us that “Jack found that the physical keys that came with his machines were the same for all ATMs of that type made by that manufacturer.” This has long been reported by election protection activists concerning voting machines.

Jack found that you could hack the ATM machines over the internet. The same accusations were made of voting machines in Florida in 2000 and in Ohio is 2004 after election results fell significantly outside the exit poll margins of error.

This is coupled with recent revelations by Diebold that their machines were physically attacked and illegal software was installed on them in Russia. Here’s the quote from Diebold’s website:

“Criminals broke into a number of ATMs in Russia and installed illegal software. This crime required an aggressive, physical break-in with high-tech expertise once the inside of the ATM was accessed.”

State aid bill passes Senate
The Senate approved cloture on Harry Reid’s state aid bill minutes ago by a vote of 61-38, with nude Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown voting no and Democratic troll Ben Nelson — along with both of the two crown princesses from Maine — voting yes. So teachers in Nevada and Maine will not be fired, and states will be able to pay their Medicaid bills for six months.

(Assuming the House approves this, that is, after they return from recess. Unless they revolt over something like the fact that the bill is funded in part by rolling back food stamp benefits and gutting a renewable energy investment fund.)

Republicans — who “support” state aid, as long as it’s paid for — then tried to kill this paid-for state aid with the usual rules tricks, but that failed. And now everyone is moving on to making grandstanding speeches about Elena Kagan, which should be entertaining. (Like, here’s Roland Burris! Enjoy every minute of this, Roland.)

Pat C,

I understand how you feel. I got my last lawn mower by calling the guy who sold me one that didn’t run for long, and trading him it, and 2 non-running riding mowers, for one push mower that so far still works. I have 1/3 of an acre. If I had 1/2 I could have a goat. My art - sculpture - gone while I do what pays the bills. Because I still have a mortgage, and I am too young for SS. Which likely won’t be there when I’m old enough to collect it.

I’m painting my roof white today if Kilz performs better than Kilz2 on my test shingle. Kilz 2 causes a bit of curling upward, something that wouldn’t be good for my roof’s ability to handle rain. Regular Kilz is oil based. Art ? Nope.

Love this - The Cardinal T-Square
A timely fairy tale (recommend going to link to read whole thing):

As many of you know, fairy tales contain archetypal information about how to meet and solve the problems and sorrows of life and continue on at a higher level of consciousness, both collectively and personally. In fairy tales, kings symbolize a collective dominant – such as capitalism or Christianity – as well as a personal dominating belief about yourself. Queens symbolize the emotional components of that collective paradigm or personal complex. What happens when it’s time for a paradigm shift? How and what would a fairy tale tell us about that?

In this fairy tale, a king and a queen love each other so much that when the queen dies, she demands that the king only marry again if he can find someone just like her. She wants him to have the same support as she gave him. And because of that twisted promise, he does. His daughter grows up to ‘look’ just like her mother and the king falls in love with her and demands to marry her. This part of the story sets up the situation: the feelings that supported the collective dominant are gone. There is no longer the emotional support for it. But the patriarchally-bound feminine spirit of life is so divorced from the laws of life that it colludes against new life to keep the old king in power. This is part of the feeling tone of this dominant – do anything to stay in power, even to killing off the new life, ideas, ideals that want to be expressed.

Instead of stepping aside and letting a new dominant belief arise naturally from the personal or collective Unconscious, the Old king wants to continue to rule through his daughter. He wants to use and manipulate the new feelings that are arising to continue to hold onto his power.

This has always been the problem with patriarchy, going back to the old Titans of Greece who swallowed their own children rather than let them take over rulership when it was time for a change. This is what we’re seeing now in our culture – capitalism, the old/new dominant belief of the world, isn’t working. It’s based on values which are no longer appropriate for what we face. And yet patriarchal thinking wants to hold on to power and would rather have us die than create new life for the future.

In personal terms, this old king keeps us in line, even when our feelings are telling us that something is wrong. It’s an unconscious set of rules that shapes our vision of life, until we rebel and set out in search of our individual values and beliefs.

Our Meg declines to join the Gates-Buffett “billionaires’ pledge”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has no plans to give at least half her wealth to charity, as 40 of her fellow billionaires pledged to do Wednesday.

Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and multibillionaire investor Warren Buffett released a list of wealthy families and individuals who have joined their six-week old campaign to give at least half their wealth to charity.

Asked about the pledge Tuesday, Whitman said she and husband Griffith Harsh have made substantial contributions to their own charitable foundation.

It’s unclear exactly how much Whitman and her husband have given to charity over the years. She has refused to disclose her tax returns but has said she has copies dating back 25 years.

Prabhata:

I’ve worked for the city of San Francisco for the last thirty years. And I’ve watched Newsome from his tenure as a Supervisor through supporting him for Mayor.

He is a very ambitious man in a city that has a 25% LGBT population. Now even though Newsom did a smart political move for himself, he put a bullseye on San Francisco and Democrats that Karl Rove used to his advantage in bringing right wing evangelicals to vote for Bush in 2004. Rove used the very tapes of the long lines of gay couples getting married as a means to convey what life would be like under Democrats. It worked.

That said, being a resident of SF, Newsom has cut a very interesting swath, trying to make a name for himself to rise quickly up the ranks, including a failed gubenatorial race, and what looks like will be a successful run for Lt. Governor in November 2010.

As for gay marriage, the most critical item that galvanized the gay community and Gavin Newsom to make the move was a court ruling that found a ruling against gay marriage in the early 2000s was unconstitutional. That’s when Newsom found it perfect timing to open the Clerk’s Office to same-sex couples. But to do it on his own? No way in hell.

As for Prop 8 findings, there will be appeals, but I think the ruling yesterday is going to stymie interests in pursuing similar initiatives statewide from now into the near future. We proved we can win in court, using legal representatives from across the political aisles to prove the point.

The right wing is trying to test the very limits of the selective Constitution they’ve sworn they’d defend. But eyes on the prize for everyone. This one needs every battle fought and waged with as much fervor as possible until its law.

Here’s more from Andrew Sullivan on yesterday’s Prop 8 ruling and the reactions to it:

Those Liberal Judges
05 Aug 2010 02:30 pm

Over at Powerline, John Hinderaker writes:

“I think it is safe to assume that anyone nominated to the Supreme Court by a Democratic President is explicitly or implicitly committed to the proposition that gay marriage is a constitutional right. If you think that is bizarre, stop voting for Democratic politicians.”

His analysis might look less silly if before posting he’d read David Boaz:

“Judge Walker was first appointed to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, at the recommendation of Attorney General Edwin Meese III (now the Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy and Chairman of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation). Democratic opposition led by Sen. Alan Cranston (D-CA) prevented the nomination from coming to a vote during Reagan’s term. Walker was renominated by President George H. W. Bush in February 1989. Again the Democratic Senate refused to act on the nomination. Finally Bush renominated Walker in August, and the Senate confirmed him in December.”

There’s more:

“Coalitions including such groups as the NAACP, the National Organization for Women, the Human Rights Campaign, the Lambda Legal Defense Fund, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force worked to block the nomination.

In other words, this “liberal San Francisco judge” was recommended by Ed Meese, appointed by Ronald Reagan, and opposed by Alan Cranston, Nancy Pelosi, Edward Kennedy, and the leading gay activist groups. It’s a good thing for for advocates of marriage equality that those forces were only able to block Walker twice.”

This was a victory for gay conservatism in many ways, not that today’s conservative movement wants anything to do with us.

Deficit Scare Talk Is a Big Scam by Corporations and Right-Wingers; The Problem Is Not Enough Good-Paying Jobs
We have to drive the debate about our economic priorities and not get distracted by the opposition.

The Great Recession doesn’t exist in Washington, DC. Six of the 10 wealthiest counties in the U.S. are in the DC metropolitan area, and according to Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index, citizens of the nation’s capitol are the most optimistic in the country, far more positive about the economy than the rest of America. Google-Verizon Deal: The End of The Internet as We Know It

A non-neutral Internet means that companies like AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and Google can turn the Net into cable TV and pick winners and losers online. A problem just for Internet geeks? You wish. All video, radio, phone and other services will soon be delivered through an Internet connection. Ending Net Neutrality would end the revolutionary potential that any website can act as a television or radio network. It would spell the end of our opportunity to wrest access and distribution of media content away from the handful of massive media corporations that currently control the television and radio dial.

So the Google-Verizon deal can be summed up as this: “FCC, you have no authority over us and you’re not going to do anything about it. Congress, we own you, and we’ll get whatever legislation we want. And American people, you can’t stop us.

Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered

The ring leader of the group is Bettverboten, who issues multiple digg and bury orders everyday. She is a Digg power user who has dugg 70,000 articles and has 1500 submits of her own (18% have gone popular) in one short year on the site. She was previously known as Lizbett before her lifetime ban for offensive and inappropriate comments, and has two sleeper accounts waiting if she gets banned again at loquaciouslola and MsBoop. She is also on Twitter, although her primary focus is Digg, where she has acquired a huge following of power users who are likely unaware that she is gaming the system, and even calling to bury some of her mutuals.

The primary function of the Digg Patriots is to censor politically progressive content from the upcoming Political, Political Opinion, World News, and Business sections, so that conservative stories have a better chance to get more traction. To do this, they constantly monitor these sections, progressive submitters, and news websites.

Much much more…..

Luna that’s very interesting; perhaps why Grayson votes for net neutrality??? ..so persons much pay for internet which could stop bloggers from free press?? Don’t know1

Rep. Alan Grayson shocked his passionate followers in the progressive online community this week when he aligned himself with the telecom industry and pressured the Federal Communications Commission not to write regulations protecting the principle of net neutrality.

Medicare Gets New Lease On Life; Social Security Remains Healthy- yeah!

The new health care law has significantly improved the prognosis for Medicare, extending the life of its trust fund by 12 years until 2029, and thereby delaying any need for dramatic changes in benefits or revenues, according to a new report.

The annual check-up from government actuaries overseeing the nation’s two central safety-net programs also found that Social Security continues to be much less of a problem than Medicare, and will remain in strong financial shape at least through 2037.

Fe,
Judge Walker and Justice Souter were seated during H.W.B., but few liberals talk about that the California Supreme Court, that sided with Mayor Newsom, were mostly nominated by GOP governors.
We don’t know how judges will see the issues, until we get their rulings and set a trend. And sometimes, judges change their views over the years.

Romer leaving the Whit House

http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/08/romer_to_leave.php

I’m sad to see Romer leaving. With her deep scholarship and understanding of the Great Depression, and her more progressive policy stances, she attempted to serve as a counterweight to Summers’ and Geithner’s counsel. I wish they were leaving instead of her…

Pat C

I wish I knew more about Romer…I haven’t heard the name much in the last year or so…..not sure what this shift means…

Bette, It will be interesting to see how all that plays out….net neutrality…I am not sure there is such a thing.

Prabhata:

Its a very interesting phenomena–I think it could mean that the definition of conservatism has changed to become a much more radical picture we see today, OR the judges Reagan and Bush appointed were strict adjudicators who ruled by the letter of the law, which in this case was well litigated by anti-Prop 8 team of Boies and Olson.

The whole looks like the judicial system digesting parts of itself and yet coming up whole. Former antagonists becoming friends and allies over one fight for equal rights by a gay judge nominated by America’s Conservative Avatar.

Its definitely not a lock-step in profile politics.

Fe,
I think it’s has to do more with regional views, more than party views. H.W.B. who appointed justice Thomas, who probably is at the right of Scalia, and not an academic at that. Judge Walker was seated in bench that adjudicates from S.F. for Northern CA. He could not live in a vacuum and not be influenced by the views of the people in S.F. and the Bay Area.

I edited and messed up royally. Below is what I meant:

I think it has to do more with regional views than party views. H.W.B. appointed Justice Thomas, who is not an academic and to the right of Scalia. Judge Walker adjudicates from San Francisco for Northern CA. He could not live in a vacuum and is probably influenced by the views of the people in S.F. and the Bay Area.

Lunagardener, I think Romer was pretty well squashed by Larry Summers.

This is a crucial time in the fight for Net Neutrality. The FCC is pursuing new Net Neutrality rules; Congress is weighing legislation; and President Obama wants Net Neutrality to become the law of the land.

More than 1.9 million people have already urged Congress and the FCC to stand with the public and pass strong Net Neutrality protections. If we can reach 2 million people, we will send a resounding message that Washington can’t ignore.

Urge Congress and the FCC to support Net Neutrality.

While I’ve been scanning the news for political fireworks I’ve failed to notice that Russia is literally on fire, over 900 wildfires in central and western Russia aggravated by a heat wave, Moscow smothering in smog, the firefighting infrastructure woefully obsolete and understaffed, 50 dead and 500 injured so far, people being told to stay inside their homes to avoid the smog, people wearing masks in the street.

Israel Threatens To Destroy Hostile Lebanese Border Positions

Debkafile
Aug 5, 2010

Israel has handed Lebanon an ultimatum. Before a line can be drawn on the Lebanese-Israeli clash which flared Tuesday, Aug. 3, the Lebanese Army 9th Brigade commander responsible for sending snipers to shoot at Israeli troops clearing brush on their side of the border and killing Lt. Col. (Res.) Dov Harari, must be dismissed or court-martialed, debkafile’s military sources report.
This burst of Lebanese sniper fire triggered the clash.

The ultimatum was delivered at a three-way meeting at UNIFIL headquarters in Naqura on Wednesday night, August 4, attended by UN, IDF and Lebanese Army officers, after Israel learned that the guilty Lebanese officer is a Shiite who hangs out with Hizballah commanders in South Lebanon. The possibility is not precluded that his Hizballah friends tipped him off to the presence of high Israeli officers within firing distance from the Lebanese border.

This information runs contrary to the IDF’s official line on the incident, which absolved Hizballah of involvement in the clash and claimed the Shiite terrorists were taken by surprise no less than the Israeli military.

UNIFIL carried a warning to Beirut that if the Lebanese army failed to punish the officer, Israel would deem it an enemy force and feel free to destroy its military positions along their border.

The Flimflam Man

One depressing aspect of American politics is the susceptibility of the political and media establishment to charlatans. You might have thought, given past experience, that D.C. insiders would be on their guard against conservatives with grandiose plans. But no: as long as someone on the right claims to have bold new proposals, he’s hailed as an innovative thinker. And nobody checks his arithmetic.

Which brings me to the innovative thinker du jour: Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Mr. Ryan has become the Republican Party’s poster child for new ideas thanks to his “Roadmap for America’s Future,” a plan for a major overhaul of federal spending and taxes…..

Verizon and Google: The Deal of the Titans

The world’s biggest media companies want to define how people will get content over the Internet. Money talks; independent content creators: take a walk. A mega-deal is reportedly in the works in which Verizon will favor Internet content from Google because Google has the spare cash to pay for preferred access. And this is being touted as the model for how content providers and Internet service providers will do business. We have seen the future, and it is exactly like the past.

The Writers Guild of America, East, AFL-CIO represents people who write, edit, produce, and create graphics for television, film, radio, and digital media. Our members write television drama, comedy, news, and public interest programs; they write movies for major studios and for independents; they create original content for the web, for mobile applications, and for other digital platforms. Our members know first-hand how an open Internet permits them to create more innovative, informative content and to distribute it directly to the public.

The Internet and other digital media offer an unprecedented opportunity for creators to reach consumers and for people to watch and read what they want, when they want. This is very different from traditional media in which major studios, distributors, and television networks control the flow of movies and programs. Digital technology presents a vast range of possibilities to content creators and consumers alike, and it would be a tragedy to squeeze all of that into a narrow commercial band. But that is exactly what will happen if the Federal Communications Commission and Congress permit the Verizon-Google deal to become the blueprint for the digital future.

If one of our members had written the Verizon-Google deal into a script, it would have been rejected as too obvious, too heavy-handed. At the height of the nation’s debate about net neutrality, two of the biggest players in the industry blow the entire concept to smithereens by discriminating against certain content providers in favor of those with the deepest pockets. Now the Internet will resemble television and the movies: completely dominated by a handful of multinational conglomerates that decide what the public will watch based, not on the quality of the programming, but on the margin of profit. Verizon falls easily into the role of villain; Google becomes the feckless sell-out. We could have written it ourselves, but no one would have bought the story.

I listened as someone read parts to the judge’s rulling and I thought that someone was reading straight from my heart: paraphrasing, while opnce there was a reason for sex roles-someone would work away from the house and someone would work in the house these days are now gone no need to say that they are god’s will. I just loved that plus I loved the further relaxation of the closet doors in the revelation that this judge is conservative & appointed by right-wingers. So many folk believe that all gay people and Spanish speaking folk are left-wingers and this is not the case at all.
