Israel’s Woes

Largely under the radar amidst such issues as global recession, environmental disaster, and ongoing terrorist threats, the five-year Israeli blockade of Gaza came roaring back to international consciousness this past week. When Israeli commandos aggressively responded to events on an aid flotilla in international waters, a world-wide outcry erupted. Thousands of angry demonstrators took to the streets, most notably across Europe and the Arab world. Turkey, once Israel’s closest Mideast ally, is threatening to sever ties. The UN and the EU are now loudly clamoring for an end to the blockade of Gaza, and even Israel’s most stalwart friend, the US, has described the blockade as “untenable”. Israel, for its part, stands firm that it will not lift the embargo, the goal of which is to prevent weapons from entering Gaza, and Israel continues to claim that its commandos were provoked into violence when they themselves were attacked while boarding one of the ships of the flotilla.

In Israel’s natal chart, we find clear indications of the fierce and aggressive stance this nation has historically taken against powerful forces that ultimately seek to destroy it. The Sun (23Taurus41) square to Mars (28Leo19) indicates an ongoing military posture as a way of life. The 10th house Pluto/Moon/Saturn conjunction (4 to 16Leo) square to the Node (14Taurus01), with Pluto the likely chart ruler, suggests a perpetual sense of besiegement and a threat to survival that Israel feels must be responded to with full force.

Whatever one believes regarding Israel’s current policies, it is easy to see that the Jewish nation is under a great deal of pressure as a result of the recent incident. Transiting Pluto (4Capricorn44) was both opposite Israel’s Venus (4Cancer49) and quincunx its Moon (4Leo40) during the flotilla attack, with this aspect only minutes past exact a full week later. These Pluto transits point to a strong activation of latent feelings of distrust, persecution, and power struggle that always simmer anxiously beneath the surface.

In addition to the Pluto transits, we find that Uranus is now quincunx Israel’s Ascendant. The birth time for Israel is given as somewhere between 4:30 and 4:37 PM. I feel that Scorpio rather than Libra rising is far more descriptive of Israel’s intense character, its ongoing power struggles, and its original birth out of the ashes of the Holocaust. For this reason, I use 4:32 PM which gives an Ascendant of 00Scorpio17, although up to a few minutes later also seems possible.

Using this Ascendant (00Scorpio17), we find transiting Uranus is in a quincunx aspect with it from May 9 through August 3, 2010. Moreover, from May 30 to June 8, transiting Jupiter is conjunct transiting Uranus (00Aries18), thereby strengthening Uranus’ tendency to indicate sudden, unexpected events with powerfully transformative consequences. Since the unanticipated and life-altering events on the flotilla, things have moved at a rapid pace and the landscape for Israel is suddenly shifting daily. The most recent Uranian upset came on June 6, when Iran’s navy offered to escort cargo ships that want to break the blockade.

Although things may steady a bit after June 8 as Jupiter begins to separate from Uranus, this Uranus transit and the many twists and turns and surprises it is likely to bring Israel will continue through August 2. As it nears exact, there will be a Mars/Uranus opposition from July 28 through July 30 at 00Aries/Libra20. In addition, there is a Pluto quincunx to Israel’s MC (3Leo10) from June through October 2010 which will be greatly agitated by the Mars/Pluto square of August 2 to August 4. Thus, dramatic, unexpected, transformative and possibly violent events related to Israel are possible during the window between July 28 and August 4, 2010. The transiting Saturn semisquare to natal Saturn from July 26 through August 8 suggests a less than victorious outcome initially.

One further significant time frame to consider regarding Israel comes in late December 2010 through early February 2011. It is during this period that Israel’s progressed Moon will be square to natal Mars (28Leo19), and set off by transiting Jupiter quincunx natal Mars (1/7 to 1/14/11) and transiting Uranus quincunx natal Mars (1/16 to 2/9/11). These planets suggest some kind of notable military engagement or, at the very least, a very agitated and angry citizenry. At least in the short run, the outcome of these events may be somewhat more positive for Israel than the current crisis.

Responses

Thanks for this article, Nancy.

Two things:

1) From the video I’ve seen and from the way things played out on the other 5 boats, I don’t think Israel “aggressively” attacked on any of the boats. I think they were expecting peaceful resistance which they mostly found everywhere but on the Marvi Mamara.

The blockade may be untenable but the lack of a blockade allowed Hamas to shoot missiles at Israel for 15 years and the lack of a security wall allowed suicide bombings in the restaurants and clubs and on the buses of Jerusalem. And, by the way, the security wall, at least what I saw and heard of it, was not a metal fence topped with barbed wire; it’s a “smart” security fence that uses sound, light, and motion sensors as well as video cameras!

2) It is entirely possible that Israel has Libra rising. I was just there in May and was reminded everywhere I went of Israel’s social and socialistic fabric — there were agricultural communes and moshaves, and youth groups (high energy kids, both Jewish & Arab) all over the country. Contrary to the Israeli reputation, the people I met were warm and friendly (Jews & Arabs alike) and, I’ve been told, that Jews invented gossip. Our tour guide told us that its a big part of society in Jerusalem and I was certainly looked up and down by the women in the women’s section when I attended the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem.

Whatever happens in the coming months, I hope the U.S., Russia & China can and will deflect Israeli-Iranian tensions.

Turkey is making a play for regional power

By Josef Joffe

Published: June 6 2010 19:29 | Last updated: June 6 2010 19:29

In the Middle East nothing is ever what it seems. We have heard that the Gaza flotilla was on a humanitarian mission. Well, five of the six ships were, unloading their cargo in the Israeli port of Ashdod, but the Mavi Marmara was not, provoking an Israeli assault.

This attack was “contrary to international law”, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, proclaimed. But in a state of war, as exists between Hamas-ruled Gaza and Israel, a blockade is not exactly a crime. Egypt has been sealing off Gaza by land and nobody has ever accused Cairo of breaching any conventions.

It was “state terrorism”, said Mr Erdogan. Yet terrorists do not dispatch solicitous messages, as Israel did when it radioed that it “approves the delivery of humanitarian supplies and invites you to enter the Ashdod port, after which you can return to your home ports”.

Terrorists come to kill. The Israelis came with paintballs. The troops, as a tape released by the Israel Defence Forces shows, clearly thought they were under fire. “Real weapons, real guns?” cries out one commando. “Yes, yes, real weapons!”

Was the Israeli response “disproportionate”, as President Nicolas Sarkozy of France claimed? That nine people died seems to deliver a resounding yes. But Israel’s action was incompetent, not heinous. The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 protects civilians but also says that if they are “engaged in activities hostile to the security of the state”, they shall not enjoy “such rights and privileges”.

Humanitarians do not come armed with rods and slingshots. The Turkish charity that organised the foray, Insani Yardim Vakfi (better known by its German acronym IHH), is viewed with suspicion by too many intelligence services to qualify as the friendly aid outfit as which it poses.

But let us look beyond the Mavi Marmara. Though Israelis and Palestinians get most of the limelight, much of the script is written elsewhere. The newest entrant in the larger drama is Turkey, where the flotilla was financed and put to sea. Ankara’s fierce response to the incident was a rallying cry to the region.

Next to Iran, Nato member Turkey is now the biggest headache for the west. With Egypt sinking into torpor and Riyadh firmly ensconced on the fence between Washington and Tehran, Turkey has seen the leadership of the region up for grabs – and is going for it. It has drawn Syria into its orbit and has reached a nuclear deal with Iran, its rival for hegemony.

What better way to pursue this end than to lead a crusade against the Jewish state? Going after the “Little Satan” is the card that trumps them all, and it embarrasses the “Great Satan” to boot. The real game is about dominance at the expense of America, which US President Barack Obama has yet to grasp. Neither has Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister. Sailing into the Turkish trap was a blunder worthy of General Custer at Little Big Horn.

The clumsy execution damages the IDF’s reputation. Why did those commandos abseil down on to a deck swarming with well-prepared defenders? Why not use water cannon and teargas – any kind of non-lethal force – if board you must? Check the videos and you see those “civilians” doing just the right thing: tying the abseil ropes to the hull, forcing the pilots to forgo the advantage of a rapid, intimidating drop. To disable the Mavi Marmara’s screw and rudder would have killed no one but would have kept her from breaking the blockade.

Israel has Turkish guile and its own folly to thank for this tragedy. Israel must learn, as it should have after the Lebanon war of 2006 and the Gaza war of 2009, that for it to kill civilians is precisely what its enemies want. The US must learn that the real contest is between itself, Turkey and Iran. It is now up against both.

The arena extends from Ankara to Kabul, and the issue is who shall be umpire. Mr Obama thinks that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the source of all trouble. If it were, Iran would not be trying to develop nuclear weapons and Turkey would not be seeking mastery over its ancient domain. Nor were Palestinians on the mind of the previous claimants to hegemony – from Nasser’s Egypt to Saddam’s Iraq. Remember that the deadliest and longest war in the region was between Iraq and Iran.

Terror in Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey and Afghanistan is not designed to uproot Jewish settlements. It is not Israel that motivates Syria’s recolonisation of Lebanon. Turkey and Iran are not vying for control so as to promote a two-state solution.

Palestine has got nothing to do with it. But it shares a tragic fate with Israel. Whenever the two start talking, somebody will set a trap or throw a bomb. To borrow from Churchill: in the Middle East, it is easier to war-war than to jaw-jaw.

Sharon - I tried to be as even handed as I could in describing the situation when I wrote it. I just reworded the second sentence to tone it down.

Scorpio rising seems right to me, with the constant threat to their security. I also like the first degree rising rather than the 29th degree. The birth of Israel seems more like the beginning of a cycle than the end of one. In any event, Uranus impacting the Ascendant now seems quite right. The good news is that the only variation possible is between 4:30 and 4:37, which gives us a pretty accurate chart, with the angles within less than two degrees of possible variation.

BA - That is a really interesting article. Thank you. It reminds me of how the GOP always gets us talking about inconsequential nonsense so the real issues never get discussed.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/opinion/06friedman.html?emc=eta1

Thomas Friedman wrote in his column today that the infrastructure in the West Bank and the Palestinian National Defense Forces are being built up so well that Israel has reduced its check-points from 42 to 14. The West Bank is well on its way to being the prototype Palestinian state. Friedman states that when other stay out of it, the two sides can move forward because no one is manipulating from the side lines.

Starlight, you are welcome, glad you found the piece interesting…

Starlight,

” I feel that Scorpio rather than Libra rising is far more descriptive of Israel’s intense character, its ongoing power struggles, and its original birth out of the ashes of the Holocaust”

I enthusiastically concur.

What a tough, tough, chart; the level of astrological afflictions almost makes it seem like a misbegotten nation.

Thank you for this piece: my sister and an ex-boyfriend share Israel’s chart. Tough ,tough characters-uncomplaining,hard workers with granite within-never try to move them when they believe they are threatened.
Now-Sharon I thank you for your words and thoughts that remind us of the beauty of people Jews and Arabs and the children. I know that I become unconscious of the depth and complexity of the Israeli/Palestinian struggle and only “think” of the destruction of Palestine and the resemblance of our own destruction of the First People here.

I can’t get to Scorpio rising for Israel with the time range given still Scorpio rising is possible and makes sense given what we have witnessed as their history. The South Node is in Scorpio in the first. If I was doing the chart for an individual I would warn against going to war, against feeling attacked and direct this individual to gardening and the maintenance of of the land and possessions and the love of family and traditions-focus on the Taurus North Node in the seventh house. Of course I can see that the “marriage” between the US and Israel has been fruitful and has resulted in Israel’ status as one of the “nuclear” nations. At any rate any time the Israeli’s retreat and focus on fighting to the death they will be hated and risk their own alienation from other, friendly partners.
Sharon I think that I see what you see-the original Israeli love of relatedness, of beauty and harmony-the kibbutz’, “their social and socialistic fabric”,thank you Sharon, and that the Israel we know today is fixated on that Scorpio S Node and digging deeper and deeper to get even and get safe.

From BA’s article:

Turkey has seen the leadership of the region up for grabs – and is going for it.

Sailing into the Turkish trap was a blunder worthy of General Custer at Little Big Horn.

And here is something that I found when preparing to write the above article. Progressed Pluto in Israel’s chart makes a waxing, within one degree, square to Israel’s Node (14Taurus01) from late 1974 to exact in 2014. This takes the natal square between these two and brings it to its fullest fruition. After 2014 it very slowly begins to wane.

Guess what happened in late 1974? The first settlements were built in the West Bank. Now, I don’t think we can see these things as singly determined. But the intensity, rigidity, single-mindedness, and desire for total control versus feeling vulnerable that Pluto always brings is clearly greatly strengthened by this aspect. It can only be good news that is will begin to slowly weaken after 2014/2015. Perhaps the settlement movement will build until such overreach that it implodes around 2015. Again, I don’t want to see this aspect as the only indicator of that policy, but I sure thought it was interesting that they began at the same time.

Today’s WP has an article about the newly ambitious Turkey on the world stage but it not as concise as the one BA posted.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/06/AR2010060604052.html?hpid=topnews

“They want to be the big kid on the block,” said Henri Barkey, a Turkey expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. “They have essentially a very inflated sense of their own importance.”

Turkey’s leaders have dubbed their foreign policy “zero problems with neighbors.” The country has dramatically improved relations with such one-time rivals as Syria, which used to harbor Turkish Kurdish guerrillas, and Iran, once feared for its potential to export Islamist radicalism.

The new policy is based, in part, on expanding business ties. Turkey’s former state-dominated economy has grown rapidly, with the emergence of dynamic export centers — termed the Anatolian Tigers. Turkey’s trade with its neighbors grew more than 20 times from 1991 to 2008.

The nation’s ambitious leaders have sought to use their growing regional heft to play a bigger role globally. Turkey mediated between Israel and Syria, before Israel’s brief war in Gaza during the 2008-09 winter ended talks. More recently, Turkish and Brazilian diplomats sought to send some of Iran’s low-enriched uranium abroad for processing, in a deal aimed at averting new U.N. sanctions pursued by Washington.

Starlight, thanks for the pointer on the Pluto progression into a square of the Nodes. I haven’t really looked at the charts involved and I am not a mundane astrologer but these are things that any astrologer can use to understand.

If only Israel could just restart the country for a new chart…..

I can’t say that I like the neighborhood either. What a terrible mess that region of the world has been for sooooooo long.

I haven’t had time to read Starlight’s article and just glanced at the comments but as a Scorpio myself I would say that Israel’s ascendant is definitely Scorpio, and unevolved at that. Scorpios are often so anxious and hellbent on retalliating that they sting themselves and that’s what they seem to be doing right now.

It would be nice to think that they will rise from the ashes like the Phoenix but I don’t think that will happen as long a Bibi Netanyahu (sp?) is PM.

With Asc., Sun & Moon all fixed signs, negotiations seem almost impossible. I’m not an astrologer but that much seems pretty clear.

Here is some fun sarcasm about the end of the soon to come Jeb Bush administration, and the following Dennis Kucinich administration — dont forget to read the comments.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2010/06/how_would_i_feel_if.html

Nancy, with this recent talk of Turkish influence building, what pops into my mind is the fall (and now possible resurgence) of the Ottoman Empire - which really is the genesis of all the middle east borders mess of today.
Is there such a thing as looking at a dissolution date (from what I found, Nov 1 1922) and bringing that forward to the happenings of today?

From Neptune Cafe (he also uses the 4:37 pm time)

-snip-

Israel’s horoscope (May 14, 1948; 4:37 pm; Tel Aviv) reflects the current political turmoil and warns of more trouble ahead. The timing of the commando raid can be seen in transiting Jupiter’s placement in the last degree of Pisces opposing Israel’s progressed Mars, located in the last degree of Virgo. This connection was exact (to-the-minute) when the raid began on May 31. Also, transiting Neptune opposite Israel’s natal Mars describes the military challenges at sea.

As described in December 2008*, transiting Pluto has been in a long-term square to Israel’s progressed Midheaven and will continue to create complex international problems for the next six months. The Free Gaza Movement already has four more humanitarian aid vessels ready to challenge Israel’s blockade. The June 26 Lunar Eclipse on Israel’s Venus promises intense diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

A bright spot can be seen ahead: Israel’s progressed Venus is about to turn direct. Since November 4, 1967, Israel’s progressed Venus has been in retrograde motion. Following the 1967 Six Day War, Israel has controlled Jerusalem and other pre-1967 territories. On December 25, 2010, Israel’s progressed Venus turns direct while very near natal Uranus. This combination suggests a tremendous diplomatic breakthrough regarding Israel’s annexed and militarily controlled territory.

Defending Society

“Solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” is how Thomas Hobbes described life in the absence of society. His conclusion, 350 years ago, that society is necessary to maintain civilized relations between people reverberated in March, when Tea Partiers attacked a disabled man during a health care reform protest. With anti-social forces tearing at our connective fabric, it is essential to understand the value of society and to defend it.

Society is a network of institutions and relationships, from churches to public schools. It encompasses physical infrastructure, financial mechanisms, and social norms and behavior, as well as the legal system that supplies essential security and stability. Members of a well-functioning society are bound together by respect, trust, and need.

Society enables us to pool resources, share risks, and create opportunity. It provides safety to its members, an environment for social relations, and the non-violent resolution of differences. In doing so, society allows us to accomplish things we couldn’t as individuals, families, or communities.

kiwijeannie - I don’t know about that chart, but I would think Turkey’s chart would be revealing.

Lorrie - A bright spot can be seen ahead: Israel’s progressed Venus is about to turn direct.

That is a great find!! And very promising.

pat - With leftists and rightists clashing in Israel, it makes me think that Uranus is truly quincunx that Ascendant. The 4:37 chart is a bit too late to make that transit active, whereas the 4:32 (or 4:33) chart gives them a Uranus station quincunx for the next 7 weeks.

While we’re talking about reincorporating countries, can we reincorporate the US under a less racist and conservative Sun (at its lower type) than Cancer? My default preference is Libra, for the sake of peace (ideally) and balance, although every sign of course has its ups and downs.

RE: Libra rising for Israel-Libras argue and demand that the rules be honored they are not simply undesisive. The last degree of Libra gives a conflicted chart with Scorpio contained in the first (of course then Taurus in the 7th). with the NNode in Scorpio I would think that perhaps Israelis as a people don’t really see how aggressive Israel really is nor do they, the people, understand how they have been maniipulated to become the only “nuclear power” in the region. Perhaps ,also, the “people” don’t realize that ultimately their greatest gift to the world is their ability to bring life back to the desert.
Sybil Edmonds has been outrageously brave to bring us news we truly need. I am curious over the way she has been “handled” as if she is one of the group who has spoken too loudly at a party. And yes her information regarding Turkey and US lawmakers is so very pertinent now.

Starlight,
In the past you have mentioned the psychological triangle-cycle that includes someone (clients) playing out the roles of victim, persecutor and rescuer.
You were describing Hillary at the time during her campaign.
Would this triangle apply to Israel and the US?

lizzie - Much of the mentality in the Middle East revolves around being victimized and then taking “justified” revenge (persecutor), sometimes years or even centuries later. No one ever seems to take full responsibility for perpetuating the cycle. I don’t know that the US is much of a rescuer, perhaps a bit. When it does try to intercede and “rescue”, it gets slapped down, like when Biden was in Israel and some right wingers timed the settlement expansion for during that trip.

Thank you, Starlight.

BP OIL SPILL: The initial explosion took place on April 20, 2010 9:45 pm CST 22 North 37 088 West 38, some 48 miles away from shore and over a mile deep in the ocean smack dab in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. To date, the oil has poured out of the seemingly unstoppable hole at rates never seen before in a situation never experienced before. And it all started ON THE DAY that Chiron entered Pisces ~ the never healing wounding of the sea is taking place before our eyes.

Editorial
Keeping Politics Safe for the Rich
Published: June 8, 2010

In a burst of judicial activism, the Supreme Court on Tuesday upended the gubernatorial race in Arizona, cutting off matching funds to candidates participating in the state’s public campaign finance system. Suddenly, three candidates, including Gov. Jan Brewer, can no longer receive public funds they had counted on to run against a free-spending wealthy opponent.

The court’s reckless order muscling into the race was terse and did not say whether there were any dissents, though it is hard to imagine there were not. An opinion explaining its reasoning will have to wait until the next term, assuming it takes the case, but by that time the state’s general election will be over and its model campaign finance system substantially demolished.

It seems likely that the Roberts court will use this case to continue its destruction of the laws and systems set up in recent decades to reduce the influence of big money in politics. By the time it is finished, millionaires and corporations will have regained an enormous voice in American politics, at the expense of candidates who have to raise money the old-fashioned way and, ultimately, at the expense of voters.

Mimi - It looks like Neptune is stationary opposite Israel’s Mars from mid-March to early July. This is likely to add some significant amount of self-delusion to the mix in their thinking about how effective aggression (Mars) will be, and it also add some ungrounded ideological fervor. Note that will have passed once that crucial period in late July begins, when Uranus returns to the quincunx of the Ascendant activated by Mars, etc. Some harsh lessons may come then when reality comes crashing up against the Neptunian fantasies.

The US has a Neptune/Mars square in the natal chart, and we often get into delusional wars when it is activated (Vietnam and Iraq). Neptune also gives the feel of an enemy you can’t quite get your grip around, as we have seen in the past month with US pr Moon square Mars and now conjunct Neptune. Now spilled oil is the enemy, but it is a similar pattern to what happened during two wars against insurgencies.

Mimi - I am only just beginning to take a look at Turkey’s chart. The Moon is 29Gemini55, not quite Cardinal but being hit by the Jupiter/Uranus (00Aries) now and again hit in July by Saturn, Uranus, and Mars. Clearly, more to come and the Turkish people will be riled up. Again note the parallels with the agitated time in Israel in late July.

Then the Uranus/Pluto square will hit the Ascendant (7Cancer), (Mars 7Libra), and Pluto (12Cancer) from early 2011 through early 2013. Yikes!! It will be interesting to see if this is a big power grab and if it will tie in with Russia in some way, which has a Mars/Uranus square at 8 of the cardinal signs.

Marta - I abhor the Roberts court!! I am darkly hoping one of those 5 will become somehow unable or unwilling to keep working. I don’t want to specify anything specific, just somehow decide they need to retire for some reason. They have the power to destroy anything good we might manage to get through the GOP filibuster and into law.

Starlight, yes, yes, yes. I also loathe them. May the infamous 4 (1 already left) drop out, leave on a permanent basis, so we never have to listen to them again! Oh, that’s right, it’s 5 again with Roberts.

The Money Gusher

Posted June 7, 2010

The oil industry’s decommissioning costs will dwarf those of nuclear power. The money being made now should be put aside to meet them.

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 8th June 2010

Has BP ever made a profit? The question looks daft. The oil company posted profits of $26bn last year(1). There’s no doubt that BP has been pumping money into the pockets of its shareholders. The question is whether this money is what the company says it is. BP calls it profit. I call it the provision the firm should be making against future liabilities.

Despite an angry letter from two US senators(2) and a warning from Barack Obama about spending big money on their shareholders while nickeling and diming coastal people(3), despite the fact that it has no idea what its total liabilities in the Gulf of Mexico will be, BP seems to be planning to pay a dividend this year. It’s likely to amount to more than $10bn. As the two senators noted, by moving money “off the company’s books and into investors’ pockets”, BP “will make it much more difficult to repay the US government and American communities”.

Pollution has been defined as a resource in the wrong place. That’s also a pretty good description of the company’s profits. The great plumes of money that have been bursting out of the company’s accounts every year are not BP’s to give away. They consist, in part or in whole, of the externalised costs the company has failed to pay, and which the rest of society must carry.

PLUTONOMISM

For the super-rich hoity toities of our land, the democratic populism arising among the hoi polloi is unpleasant, messy, and… well, so common. Instead of that, they sniff, America should be ruled by an “ism” of their invention: plutonomism.

Yes, it’s an actual word, derived from “plutocracy.” It was coined in 2005 by a team of “global investment strategists” at Citigroup, the Wall Street financial giant. While populism is based on the egalitarian principle of the common good, plutonomism unabashedly espouses the virtue of “the rich getting richer.”

In a 2006 memo to Citigroup’s wealthy clients, lead “strategist” Ajay Kapur declared: “Our thesis is that the rich are the dominant drivers of demand” in the U.S. and other “plutonomies.” How does a country become a plutonomy? One essential factor, he writes, is “favorable treatment by market-friendly governments [to allow] the rich to prosper.” Another is to have corporate CEOs who “lead the charge” on globalization and automation to transfer more of the nation’s wealth into corporate profits “at the expense of labor.”

Kapur notes that the wealthiest one percent of Americans – whom he calls “the plutonomists” – had benefited disproportionately from recent increases in worker productivity, and he happily forecast that “global capitalists are going to be getting an even greater share of the wealth pie over the next few years.”

Isn’t it ironic that the word plutocracy derives from Greek - and Greece is the lynchpin of the Euro finance meltdown. What symbolism!

“BP OIL SPILL: The initial explosion took place on April 20, 2010 9:45 pm CST 22 North 37 088 West 38, some 48 miles away from shore and over a mile deep in the ocean smack dab in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. To date, the oil has poured out of the seemingly unstoppable hole at rates never seen before in a situation never experienced before. And it all started ON THE DAY that Chiron entered Pisces ~ the never healing wounding of the sea is taking place before our eyes.” Anne Ortlee

I find it oddly coincidental (or not) that April 20 is also Hitler’s birthday and the Columbine HS shooting massacre in Colorado. April 20 is becoming an ominous date.

Oil Spill Cleanup Progresses, Costner Industries Waits for Green Light

Besides BP’s oil collection efforts, the company reports that over 1.9 million feet of booms (362 miles), including some 500,000 feet of oil absorbing booms are in place. The oil spill effort is currently being manned by over 19,000 workers and over 930 vessels, including skimmers, tugs, barges and recovery vessels; effectively turning the gulf into one giant boom-laying factory.

And now along comes CINC Industries, Inc., also known as Costner Industries Nevada Corporation, with centrifugal extractor technology. Although no formal announcement can be found, reports are that BP will test Costner’s product to clean up the gulf spill. Whether or not the extractor will pass BP’s testing, according to last reports, they are at least ready to go. All that is needed now is the green light from BP.

Also in New Orleans, Kevin Costner, famed Waterworld actor, has been on the news demonstrating the water-oil separator that he and his brother have been developing over two decades. According to Costner, the centrifugal devices not only have the capacity to purify oily water up to levels of 97 percent, but can be used with other purifying machines to make the water safe for drinking. Besides being able to get really oily water really clean, Costner’s machines also have the ability to clean oily water quickly. Costner’s bigger extractors can process 200 gallons per minute, or 288,000 gallons per day.

The logistics of setting up these machines throughout the gulf still has to be thought out; however, Costner has had experience. According to Time Magazine’s February 3, 1997 issue, Costner’s machines were used to clean up an oil spill in Japan.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster caused headlines around the world, yet the people who live in the Niger delta have had to live with environmental catastrophes for decades

Costner appeared before congress today, I think he said BP bought 32 of his units.

How Kevin Costner Earned the Attention of BP

Over the course of the last decade, the actor presented his technology at oil industry-related conferences; most notably the Offshore Technology Conference somewhere around 2000. It was at that presentation that a number of BP employees witnessed Costner’s centrifuge demo; leading to the “oh yea, I remember that…” moment last month when the company was angling for ideas.

But first they needed a bit of reminding, which is where Costner scored big in Billy Nunngesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, a governmental district in coastal Louisiana. John Houghtaling, CEO of Ocean Therapy Solutions contacted Nunngesser, who remembered the presentation, and then sent a letter on Costner’s behalf to Doug Suttles, BP’s chief operating officer for exploration and production. The rest is history — and now Costner and his team are preparing to deploy his large centrifuges in deep water with the help of BP — and hopefully, to the benefit of the ecosystem.

The only hitch is that Costner’s tech has not been certified by United States Coast Guard regulations, as its purity levels for the discharge of water are apparently high above legal requirements. Time will tell if the rules are bent in an effort to clean up the water sooner than later.

kiwijeanie - Good find - Marjorie Orr’s take on Cheney and Halliburton. As the Gulf waters are polluted, surface water and aquifers are also at risk by the gas industry. This might mean that the infamous ‘Halliburton Loophole’ which Cheney slipped into the 2005 Energy Bill could become history. The EPA is studying fracking fluids right now, for the second time. In 2005, the Energy Bill “…stripped the Environmental Protection Agency of its authority to regulate a drilling process called hydraulic fracturing. Invented by Halliburton in the 1940s, it involves injecting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals, some of them toxic, into underground rock formations to blast them open and release natural gas.”

These are pushed deep into the ground (5,000-8,000 feet) to facilitate extraction of natural gas. The ingredients remain a mystery as they are ‘proprietary’ business information. Hydro-fracking companies (Halliburton is one of the biggest) are excluded from seeking a permit or defining what they are putting into the earth. It is pretty much known that the BTEX chemicals as well as other toxins are part of the mix. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/opinion/03tue3.html?_r=1

I’m a little confused by this. Sounds like they tried it, it didn’t work, but they’re going to use it…

Kevin Costner promotes oil spill technology before Congress
June 9, 2010, 3:03 PM EST
WENN

BP bosses are planning to use Kevin Costner’s pioneering oil clean-up technology in a bid to halt the devastation in the Gulf of Mexico again after an initial experiment failed.

The oil experts used the movie star’s oil/water separator last week but the device just became clogged with oil and the effort was abandoned.

The technology, which Costner’s brother invented in the early 1990s, will be used again after the actor addressed Congress in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday during high-level talks about the oil disaster off the coast of Louisiana.

The “Dances With Wolves” star explained the oil vacuum invention to U.S. government officials, explaining the Costner Industries Nevada Corporation’s filtration system is designed to recycle oil.

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles recently agreed to test out six of the devices on the oil spill that has devastated America’s Gulf Coast region since one of its rigs exploded in April — and the first test took place last week.

Testifying before the House Subcommittee on the Environment about his stainless-steel devices, Costner said, “This is a technology that I believe has the potential to fight catastrophic oil spills … These will serve as the first line of defense in the oil spill clean-up and recovery.”

He added, “Am I up here hawking my product? I guess … Don’t take mine, take somebody else’s because I’ve been to all these oil-response conventions… and all I see are booms and the latest helicopter, but I’ve never seen one machine that deals with getting the oil out. That’s me.”

When the operators of Southern Seaplane in Belle Chasse, La., called the local Coast Guard-Federal Aviation Administration command center for permission to fly over restricted airspace in Gulf of Mexico, they made what they thought was a simple and routine request.

A pilot wanted to take a photographer from The Times-Picayune of New Orleans to snap photographs of the oil slicks blackening the water. The response from a BP contractor who answered the phone late last month at the command center was swift and absolute: Permission denied.
“We were questioned extensively. Who was on the aircraft? Who did they work for?” recalled Rhonda Panepinto, who owns Southern Seaplane with her husband, Lyle. “The minute we mentioned media, the answer was: ‘Not allowed.’ ”

Hi everyone! It feels like karma season. April 20. Starting with the oil spill. Time to clean up the MMS, the real fault is not just BP’s, it’s the MMS allowing the rig with inadequate planning and a disaster cleanup plan years too old and inadequate. Like they’ve allowed many other things. We’ve had 2 natural gas pipeline explosions in as many days in Texas. A lot of accidental deaths lately, the floods, and just personal karma, some good, some bad.

Figured I’d drop a note. Last year it was Pluto to Venus, this year it’s Uranus and Jupiter. For years it was Pluto on my ascendant, now it’s Saturn and Uranus squaring it. Ain’t all bad, but not much free time. Glad you’re still here.

The Merkley-Levin approach leaves client-focused trading (buying and selling securities for others) where it is now within the big banks, but it would exclude the inappropriate use of proprietary capital across all types of financial instruments – not just derivatives. The Merkley-Levin amendment gathered great momentum in the Senate and would almost certainly have prevailed in a floor vote – but through some unpleasant parliamentary maneuvering (at the instigation of the banking lobby, presumably), it was denied such a vote.

Within the reconciliation process, Merkley-Levin still has a chance, although the precise odds depend on how hard the White House wants to fight. The president announced the Volcker Rules to great acclaim in late January, but unfortunately the detailed follow up by his own team was lackluster at best. Senators Merkley and Levin stepped into the political and legislative gap, pushing hard for at least some version of the Volcker principles to be adopted in Senator Dodd’s bill.

They were turned back at every stage, but have remained doggedly on message. Ultimately, this comes down to President Obama. Is he willing to really put his political capital seriously into play? Or is his new found (and oil spill inspired) rhetoric against runaway corporate power and pathetic regulation at best completely empty and at worst a smokescreen for continued abuses?

We will learn a great deal in the coming weeks, not just about the future stability of our financial system, but also for what President Obama really stands.

The Emotional Dimension

From Eric Francis’ astro-subscription email today (sorry, had to copy/paste) re the Gulf’s
Dimension of our Emotions, and also what the endangered Animal Totems mean to our consciousness:
-snip-
“The late Ted Andrews, author of Animal Speak, said of the element water that it’s “the symbol of creation, passion and even sexuality. It is the element of all life. It is the symbol of new dimensions and new forces.” In other words, water is the breeding ground of consciousness, and represents an inner frontier. If we foul that frontier with millions of barrels of oil, we are basically rendering it off limits. Or we are getting a vivid picture of the toxicity we already carry. How we are responding tells us how we respond to our own inner toxicity. Can we face the truth? Do we sink into despair? Do we give up or face the work that needs to be done?

In many ways this is a physical phenomenon. Our bodies are contaminated with the results of consuming hydrocarbons, from PCBs and dioxins that start off as oil, to the phthalates that contaminate nearly every bite of food we eat if it comes from a package. All of these chemicals are hormonally toxic. They mimic hormones and get into the reproductive cycle — this is why they are toxic to fetuses, reduce sperm counts, cause hermaphrodism and create diseases like endometriosis. In a recent article in The Ecologist, I suggested that this is having many effects on the emotional content of our relationships. Many of our hormone signals, so vital to human communication, are bungled up. -snip-

Totem Readings for Three Gulf of Mexico Creatures

As I witness images of struggling animals in the Gulf, I’ve wondered what their totem meanings are: that is, what they represent. For those not familiar with this method of ‘reading’ reality, taking messages from animals is a way of using the natural world as a map of consciousness. The animals all have gifts and represent different parts of our human experience. Today I wanted to scope out this information, so I looked up in Animal Speak three of the creatures who used to thrive in the Gulf of Mexico. I have a report for you. I will leave it to you to determine what message these animal guides have for humanity at this time.

Pelican helps us float above the surface of the water when life’s trials and tribulations get intense. Extremely buoyant, he is basically unsinkable. He is friendly and does not compete with his fellows. This one lives on Tampa Bay in Florida. Photo by Eric Francis.
Pelicans. These gorgeous, friendly and ancient shore birds were around for 37 million years before humans arrived. Andrews says that a common misconception about pelicans is that they store food in their beaks, which is not true; their stretchy bill is like a fishing net. He suggests that when the pelican shows up, we need to consider whether we are storing something that should not be stored.

Pelicans are cooperative birds. They don’t compete for nesting grounds. They have a self-sacrificing quality and cannot sink. Even though it’s difficult, they can take off and fly even when their feathers are laden with water. “Symbolically, this hints at being able to be buoyant and to rest on top in spite of the heaviness of life circumstances. The pelican teaches us that no matter how difficult life becomes, no matter how much you plunge — you can pop up to the surface. The pelican holds the knowledge of how to rise above life’s trials.”

This spill is decimating the long-protected breeding grounds on Gulf of Mexico islands. These sanctuaries were created early in the 20th century by Teddy Roosevelt. In the mid-20th century, pelicans suffered a near-devastating blow from DDT, a hormonal toxin which rendered their egg shells too thin to contain a gestating chick. After DDT was banned, pelicans started to come back and had reached a new peak of population before the BP oil spill. Rescued pelicans are being taken to Florida, where they are safe, for now.

Sea turtle, with his land cousins, is a guardian of time, and represents the Great Mother. Photo from Wikimedia Commons.
Turtles. We live on Turtle Island. According to Gary Snyder, this was one of the names given by the natives to North America. The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago. Sea turtles generally breathe air, but under dire conditions can also extract oxygen from water. They are opportunistic eaters; they eat what’s available, and thus represent our relationship to opportunity.

Andrews suggests that the turtle “unites heaven and earth” and he refers to it as the Keeper of the doors: the gateway to the fairy realm. Because turtles live so long — some live for 80 years, and their species is one of the most ancient among reptiles — turtle is about understanding our perception of time.

“The turtle is the symbol of the primal mother,” he writes. “To the Native Americans, the turtle was a symbol of Mother Earth and a reminder that she provides for all our needs” — if we take care of her. Because all turtles lay eggs on land, they are a link between the earthy and watery realms. In one version of the cosmic story, existence rests on the back of a turtle, who stands on the back of another turtle, and it’s turtles all the way down.

Because the wetlands of the Gulf are being destroyed and contaminated, the breeding grounds for turtles and many other creatures are being eviscerated from the Gulf Coast region.

Dolphin is the guardian of breath, which takes us to another dimension of reality. He navigates and communicates by sound. I am praying that dolphins make a hasty exit from the Gulf because the oil and dispersants are not a healthy environment for them at all. Photo from Wikimedia Commons.
Dolphins. Dolphins, too, are world-bridgers. Extremely intelligent, they are among the seafaring mammals. Like sea turtles, they live underwater and breathe air. What is interesting about dolphins is that despite their many reasons to distrust humans, they still offer us their friendship, trust and curiosity. Many divers have been saved from shark attacks by dolphins, and Elian Gonzales, the refugee boy from Cuba, was found surrounded by them. Andrews says they represent the power of breath and sound.

“Dolphins can open new creation and dimensions to a great degree. Water is essential to life, but so is breath. Many techniques for breathing exist that teach how proper use of breath can be used to induce altered states and align oneself with new dimensions of life.”

He adds: “When you can align yourself with the dolphin through breathing you can have dolphin take you to all the places and times that existed before the great seas covered most of the world. Dolphin can lead you to underground caverns and the primordial beginnings of yourself.”

They both communicate and navigate by sound, which he describes as “the creative life force. Sound came forth out of the womb of silence and created all things. Learning to create inner sounds so that you can create outer manifestations is part of what dolphin can teach.”

This is enough to give the impression that the Gulf of Mexico is like a portal to another dimension — one that is rapidly vanishing, as most of us merely watch.”

Yours & truly,
Eric Francis

SPOLAND, SWEDEN — Mikael Karlsson owns a snowmobile, two hunting dogs and five guns. In his spare time, this soldier-turned-game warden shoots moose and trades potty-training tips with other fathers. Cradling 2-month-old Siri in his arms, he can’t imagine not taking baby leave. “Everyone does.”

From trendy central Stockholm to this village in the rugged forest south of the Arctic Circle, 85 percent of Swedish fathers take parental leave. Those who don’t face questions from family, friends and colleagues. As other countries still tinker with maternity leave and women’s rights, Sweden may be a glimpse of the future.

In this land of Viking lore, men are at the heart of the gender-equality debate. The ponytailed center-right finance minister calls himself a feminist, ads for cleaning products rarely feature women as homemakers, and preschools vet books for gender stereotypes in animal characters. For nearly four decades, governments of all political hues have legislated to give women equal rights at work — and men equal rights at home.

Oh!! thank you for the update. Recovery Act for the Gulf is the best, most wonderful news in days and seemingly in lifetimes.
