Pressure on the President

As the nation struggles with a wave of helpless rage and horrified fascination over the omnivorous oil spill that is suffocating the Gulf Coast and poisoning its waters, frayed tempers are looking for a target upon which to vent their ire. Although there is no silver bullet and, as yet, no obvious path to victory against this wily and potent foe, Americans are prone to expect the Presidential Big Daddy to be both omniscient and omnipotent, a superman able to solve all problems quickly, easily, and at minimum cost to us. Unfortunately, our infantile needs cannot be met in this situation. Although President Obama might have handled some of the public relations in this catastrophe more adeptly, it is not at all clear that he could have made any real difference in the unfolding of the actual crisis given the limited tools under his control.

In the long, drawn-out opposition of Pluto to the US Venus from January 2009 through October 2010, joined by Saturn in a square to US Venus from November 2009 through August 2010, we have seen one threat to our sense of security and peace of mind after another - from a hemorrhaging loss of jobs to a plummeting Stock Market, from the Fort Hood shooting to the Christmas and the Times Square wannabe bombers, and from the Snowpocalypse of a brutally cold winter to the endless underwater oil volcano of the spring. The worst of this Saturn/Pluto combination goes through late August 2010, although some measure of the ongoing anxiety and agitation of Pluto in its opposition to US Venus will continue through October 18. This Saturn/Pluto square provides the underlying story of perceived threats (Pluto) made far worse by our slipshod heedlessness, clarifying a need to be far more vigilant and careful (Saturn) in all planning as we move forward – financial, national security, and environmental.

The extraordinary feeling of burden and increased responsibility that weigh on the President at this moment combined with the very limited number of options available to him for action clearly point to an intensified impact coming from the planet Saturn in his chart. Saturn allows only incremental and cautious steps forward and offers many setbacks and frustrations. Any previous mistakes or oversights will be discovered and cause difficulty. Since June 2009, Obama’s solar arc Saturn has been quincunx his natal Sun (12Leo33), becoming exact on June 5. During all of May, this progression has been exacerbated by the waxing Saturn station at 27Virgo50, 17 minutes shy of an exact semisquare to Obama’s Sun, but close enough to add to the building pressure of the nearly exact Saturn/Sun aspect.

In addition, Obama’s progressed Mercury has been in a square to natal Saturn (25Capricorn19) since October 2009 and will be exact on August 5, 2010. This progression, which has demanded enormous attention to detail and an extreme conscientiousness, has been made significantly more intense since May 23 by Obama’s progressed Moon in sesquiquadrate to natal Saturn, exact on June 17. We can see from these overlapping progressions - Sun/Saturn, Mercury/Saturn, and Moon/Saturn - a period of building and severe stress, sorrow, and overwhelming challenge for the president, especially from May through June17, which coincides precisely with the developing frustrations and difficulties of the BP Gulf oil disaster. Moreover, this time-frame also coincides with the progressed US Moon square Mars in May and early June during which many in the US population are agitated, impatient, and angry.

After June17, and especially after June 25, the situation for the president and the country seems like it will ease up considerably, at least until the end of July. Two of the three Saturn progressions mentioned above will be waning. In addition, late June and July will bring the transit of Jupiter sextile Obama’s Moon (3Gemini21) and square the US Venus (3Cancer06), as well as semisquare Obama’s Ascendant (18Aquarius03). This indicates a successful, optimistic, and expansive time.

Needless to say, there will be many more serious challenges ahead for President Obama and the nation in the next several years. Certainly, the confluence of planetary aspects from July 28 through August 23, 2010, will bring significant stress of some kind, possibly launched by some severe weather or natural event or by one or more acts of violence between July 28 and August 3. But the pundits are wrong to think the Gulf oil disaster marks some dark turning point for the Obama presidency. By July 2010, his progressed Sun will move into a trine with his natal Jupiter for a year. By late November 2010, it will be joined by progressed Venus quincunx natal Jupiter for a year. By October 2010, the Inaugural Sun will progress to conjunct natal Jupiter. And by June 2011, Obama’s progressed Sun will move into a year-long square with natal Venus. Thus, despite many pockets of difficulty in the coming years, these progressions point to a resurgence in Obama’s popularity and effectiveness even in the face of the never-ending challenges of the presidency and the carping of critics along the way.

I am getting so tired of the pundits ranting: Obama’s Katrina, Obama’s Iran contra, Obama’s Hiroshima, etc. He will get past the oil disaster and be fine. There are currently 3 Saturn progressions at once on him, exacerbated by the Saturn station and the Saturn square to his Venus. The Saturn station is exact today, the solar arc Saturn quincunx to Sun is exact June 5, the progressed Moon sesquiquadrate to Saturn is exact June 17, and the progressed Mercury square to Saturn goes to exact on August 5, peaking for the next crisis. Then early August has Saturn square his Venus. By late August we are at the end of the “worst 9 months of the Obama presidency” although there will clearly be other challenges along the way.

Yes, Obama will get past it. But what’s more, we need to grow up past having Super Daddy take care of us.

We need to curb our usage and diminish our carbon footprint on the planet. What better way to start than to respond with improved ways to steward the planet, using less fossil fuels in the process, and maybe giving our fellow Americans in the Gulf Coast a break as their ecosystem is cleaned up.

We need to act so that the oil we’re so used to using isn’t such a necessity any more. BP needs to feel this in their pocketbooks. There’s no automatic down payment anymore on their stupidity or incompetence.

Starlight, Marjorie Orr on her site wrote recently that Neptune is square Obama’s MC. Could be a problem with oil and water. Also, she says Rand Paul looks mighty happy starting January 2013. Hope he won’t be a fascist President.

BP Plc told U.S. regulators six weeks before its Gulf of Mexico well blew out that workers had difficulty maintaining control, according to e-mails released today by the House Energy and Commerce Committee investigating the spill.

A March 10 e-mail to Frank Patton, the Minerals Management Service’s drilling engineer for the New Orleans district, from BP executive Scherie Douglas said the company planned to sever the pipe connecting the well to the rig and plug the hole.

“We are in the midst of a well control situation on MC 252 #001 and have stuck pipe,” Douglas wrote, referring to the subsea block, Mississippi Canyon 252, of the stricken well. “We are bringing out equipment to begin operations to sever the drillpipe, plugback the well and bypass.”

Nancy - I’ve enjoyed your posts, they are articulate and educational. I believe in my heart this current administration can and should do more to step up coordination efforts in the Gulf. To me, that’s not just pundits speaking, it’s very apparent. I have been looking for strong heart energy, a bold leadership and communications strategy, and all I sense is anger, distraction, being overwhelmed, and not the same man we experienced during the campaign. I hope we see Obama tapping into his amazing true strengths, because we and he needs it and the longer he moves away from those gifts, the harder it will be.

I was looking for a time that the deepwater rig actually exploded and found this article. They put the time it blew at 9:45 - I’m assuming that it was AM. Has anyone done a chart on the actual explosion and compared it with the US chart? I don’t have the capability to do that right now.

Starlight - It is refreshing to see the words “…a resurgence in Obama’s popularity and effectiveness…” I echo Shadowhawk - Why would anyone want to be president? Obama is being hit from all angles with huge unattended issues every other day. He is doing a fine job. (However, I would like to see troops come home sooner.)

Pat C: Thanks from bringing up the BTEX chemicals link. They are EXTREMELY TOXIC. Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes are naturally found in petroleum. As time goes on we will see more people becoming ill, more deaths of plants and animals, and less access to areas contaminated by these toxins to lower risk.

This is not an “Obamamaniac” posting this as I was actually pulling for Hillary until the candidate was chosen.

I honestly do not believe Obama or anyone in our government could really have done much at all to stem this terrible oil spill/explosion, based upon the nature of the relationship between the U.S. government and Big Oil. Although it is a f——g nightmare and beyond comprehension in scope and catastrophe, there is clearly little or no well-developed technology to address this 5,280 foot under-water gusher, not to mention what is happening another 16,000-foot-deep under-the-sea-bed drilling. Otherwise, motivation by pure greed and public relations damage-control would have been incentive enough for British Petroleum to have plugged as early as feasibly possible. Although I have a sinister view of Big Oil and its various un-holy minions. I do not believe for a moment that anyone had or has the right stuff to deal with this problem. It is going to have to be a work-in-progress. And yes, yes, yes, collectively we should all share in the blame and guilt for being strung-out on oil and petroleum products. Yes, it is a wake-up call. Yes it is disastrous. But YES, we will figure this out in time. Its going to be nasty and dirty and sickening and very, very expensive in oh, so many ways. But international law will press British Petroleum and cease its assets and indeed, make it make good on this - to all affected. No, it won’t be perfect and ever really fair, but all is definitely not lost and we still need t to send the men and women and various people working on this collective good will and hope and encouragement.

I believe that the reason behind all of dear President Obama’s problems is that if he could and would correct all of our troubles, then we, as citizens of the world would not grow and learn how to participate in our world’s future. We must get behind him and work for the common good.

I just stumbled upon this US Energy Information Agency website http://www.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/twip/twip.asp. It has maps, tables, and graphs providing information about Gulf of Mexico (GOM) oil production. It addresses “Ultra Deepwater” oil production which only began in 2004.

I had an interesting thought last night. When we had that horrible snow misery this winter which went on for weeks, every day I looked outside and felt the endless oppressiveness and upset of the thing. Given that the snowpocalypse was nothing compared to the current devastation in the Gulf, the feeling was similar. Every day now, I check the news and feel upset and oppressed by it. This is typical of a Saturn transit. It is the feel of an extra layer of burden, responsibility, frustration, and upset on top of your usual life. And there is always the inner question: when will this ever end?

As barb points out, the overlapping of three Saturn progressions, one of them exact around now and one of the others including the vulnerable Moon, suggests a time of deep upset, emotional withdrawal, and frustration for Obama. Saturn suggests the need to persevere when you would really rather flee. Obviously, he cannot. The good news is that Saturn transits and progressions eventually let up, and things seem brighter when they do.

He has some others in the next few years (pr Mars square natal Saturn, Saturn return), but this triple whammy seems the most oppressive, especially since it also includes the Saturn square to his Venus as a backdrop.

Charles - You make a good point. The US is under Saturn and Pluto right now impacting its MC and Venus and will be under Saturn for the next couple of years, impacting the Sun and then Mercury and Pluto. All of them are long transits, crossing three times. It squares Jupiter only once. When it squares the Sun, it will also sesquiquadrate the Moon, beginning just after the November 2010 election. This is a long period of Saturn’s lessons: tighten your belt, learn some discipline, some caution, some capacity to delay gratification, and be humble. It seems a good time for America to strengthen and concentrate its energies and cut away a lot of the fat - literally and figuratively. The obesity epidemic provides a good metaphor for the problem and for what needs to be done.

After reading the posts this morning, I will look for Obama to be making a Kennedy-like speech during the period this summer when he gets a break, and announce great plans, that involve the exciting, new innovations predicted by the Uranus/Jupiter conjunctions, to move us further and further away from oil and coal as our primary energy sources. We have to work harder and we can!

I am tired of the masses always needing some one to *blame*. As for the oil spill…I think each one of us, and especially those who are yelling the loudest for some one to BLAME for this, could point the big finger at ourselves, and ask the question: How many times did you fill up your car/truck/SUV this week? How many times did you make an unnecessary trip?

Who is to blame? Anybody that uses petroleum products, in any form, but especially those who are still driving a vehicle that runs on fossil fuel.

BP would not be there, would not even exist, if not for all of us.

To add to my post, we have to work harder & we can but we need the inspiring and consistent leadership that I hope and want Obama to provide. I think he is extremely intelligent and eloquent but want to see him take charge in a way that is more blatant and obvious. Things can and do happen at a grassroots level and people do provide their own leadership, particularly when there is a vacuum, but wouldn’t it be nice if the U.S. in general could respond to the oil problem as they responded in WWII and even after 911? Think about what Hitler was able to accomplish in Germany. When it’s negative or based on evil and untruth, we call it propaganda but, whatever you call it - consistent, attention-getting messages work, whether it’s done through ads, gatherings, games, challenges, competition, whatever it takes to get us motivated. Most of it, getting the message out takes strong, unified, consistent leadership! Why wait until a bigger crisis? I want to see Obama & the U.S. government really step up to this.

Just noticed Atlantic1001’s post above which said this more succinctly, as others have here. I think our president is on the right track much of time but I want to see stronger leadership, even though he obviously does have his hands full. I know he has his own leadership style but he wanted this job and he has to take more control.

Obama’s Memorial Day talk has been delayed by rain. There was another Memorial Day event that had a minor plane accident. These seem to be omens, not so much of disaster, as of frustrations and difficulties and upsets. Seems somewhat of a theme these days.

You might get your wish this Friday because transiting Mars will oppose transiting Neptune. Neptune in Aquarius just turned retrograde a little while ago (2:50 PM EDT today) and is conjunct the U.S. natal (Sibly) Moon, while Mars will be conjunct Pres. Obama’s north node and should be fired up and ready to give someone (BP?) a piece of his mind. Remember that his Uranus is conjunct his north node and is in his 7th house, which for the time being anyway, is “We The People”, and he is mighty aware that “we” are fired up over this devastation.

This might be a surprise (Uranus) unscheduled press conference or an impromptu speech where he addresses our addiction to oil and our sorrow as a result of it.

I don’t know how you manage to be so prolific, eloquent and insightful week after week. I feel sure I would have burned out by now just trying to keep pace with the accelerated unfolding of events and the pressure to sort it all out in a meaningful way. A deep bow of respect and gratitude…

I don’t know too much about John Hogue, but was sent this by a friend who consumes astrological predictions particularly if it is of a political nature (including your writings). I wouldn’t normally post an unknown source but it has to do with Obama relative to the Uranus in Aries/Saturn in Libra opposition and seems in keeping with your latest piece. So here is an excerpt:

Turkey has threatened Israel with unprecedented action after Israeli forces attacked an aid vessel, killing 10 peace activists headed to Gaza. Israel said 10 people died while those on the ship said at least 15 were killed.

A shocked world has responded with outrage. Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel and warned of unprecedented and incalculable reprisals.

Two Turkish activists were reported to be among those killed in the flotilla. Ankara warned that further supply vessels will be sent to Gaza, escorted by the Turkish Navy, a development with unpredictable consequences.

Sparks are flying.

I hope Turkey will let the UN take the lead. I think of Turkey as a kind of linchpin for that region and if they move too much off center then all hell could break loose.

About that ‘last straw’ anger relative to the undertow of dogma coming from all directions - pundits, politicians and neanderthals of the world - Hogue said this in that second article I linked to, which sums it up nicely for me:

I think Israel has gotten to the point of using poor judgement, but with all the terrorism they have sustained I have some sympathy for them. Someone needs to help them get their perspective back.

Rand Paul Remarks Lead Kentucky Legislature To Pass Civil Rights Legislation

The Kentucky Senate, reacting to a divisive comment by Republican Rand Paul, has adopted a resolution declaring any form of discrimination to be inconsistent with American values.

Louisville Democratic Sen. Gerald Neal introduced the resolution Friday during a special session on the state budget. It was adopted without objection in the predominantly Republican chamber.

Neal, Kentucky’s only black state senator, said he took personal offense at the comment made last week by Paul, a U.S. Senate candidate, who was criticizing the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon charged that the mission was simply an attempt to provoke the Israelis. That was certainly the case. The mission was designed to demonstrate that the Israelis were unreasonable and brutal. The hope was that Israel would be provoked to extreme action, further alienating Israel from the global community and possibly driving a wedge between Israel and the United States. The operation’s planners also hoped this would trigger a political crisis in Israel.

A logical Israeli response would have been avoiding falling into the provocation trap and suffering the political repercussions the Turkish NGO was trying to trigger. Instead, the Israelis decided to make a show of force. The Israelis appear to have reasoned that backing down would demonstrate weakness and encourage further flotillas to Gaza, unraveling the Israeli position vis-à-vis Hamas. In this thinking, a violent interception was a superior strategy to accommodation regardless of political consequences. Thus, the Israelis accepted the bait and were provoked.

Israel’s enemies are now turning the tables. This maneuver was far more effective than suicide bombings or the Intifada in challenging Israel’s public perception and therefore its geopolitical position (though if the Palestinians return to some of their more distasteful tactics like suicide bombing, the Turkish strategy of portraying Israel as the instigator of violence will be undermined).

This happened on Sunday.

Even if Israel knows that these ships carry nothing but aid, they still cannot allow that aid to get into Gaza. Israel has been engaging in a complete blockout of information coming out of Gaza. Nobody is let in, and certainly no one is let out. The borders are blockaded, and recently Israel has concocted this story of “thousands of tons of medical aid” going to Gaza from Israel.

An international group seeing the state of Gaza currently would blow the lid off what conditions are like in there. it would expose Israel and what israel is doing, and prove lie to the brand-new story of Israel generously supplying Gaza with aid and medicine and food.

In other words, if this flotilla were to land and start distributing, it would become a huge embarassment for Israel, and given how many leaders of the nations involves were keeping an eye on the situation, would have very likely led to substantial condemnation of Israel’s “efforts” in Gaza.

So rather than risk that, Israel intercepted the flotilla, shot some people, and is now pretty much depending on the US to bail them out. For Israel, it’s a better option than the alternative; the US wouldn’t be able to give israel a free pass when it came to conditions in Gaza, but it can do so over their attack on civilians in international waters.

That’s why Israel did this.

The flotilla was carrying more than immediate aid. They carried prefab homes, concrete and other things that would amount to a reconstruction:

– Israel has denied the existence of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and publishes details of the basic supplies it allows in daily.

The list, however, never includes essential building materials and other daily staples that might help rebuild Gaza’s shattered economy and the thousands of homes damaged and destroyed in Israel’s offensive against Hamas at the start of 2009. Israel says it fears such materials would be used by Hamas to build weapons and bunkers.

This attack may well be just the thing to galvanize the world against what is happening in Gaza. It often takes a story that is easy to digest and that can symbolize a certain narrative. This is coming just as Jupiter moves to conjunct Uranus and with Uranus just into Aries and quincunx Israel’s Ascendant. This suggests big sudden upsets that are very trans- formative. This event may really change the status quo. We will see. Whether it was purposefully provocative is anyone’s guess, but it is an interesting theory and suggests a parallel to the Exodus story, a very ironic thought.

Here’s the correct formula with math!

PSI at sea level=14.7 pounds per sq. inch.

Water weighs more than this, though. Each one inch column that’s one foot deep will weigh 0.445 pounds.

So if you’re right at sea level, the pressure will be 14.7 psi. And for every foot you go underwater, you add another 0.445 pounds. So at one foot deep, the pressure would be 14.7 psi + 0.445 psi = 15.145 psi. And at two feet deep it would be 14.7 psi + 2*(0.445 psi) = 15.59 psi, etc.

So, 14.7 psi + 5000*(0.445 psi) = 2239.7 psi

14.7 psi + 19000*(0.445) = 8469.7 psi

Once again, this excludes the pressures of the Earth herself, which are most likely unmeasurable.

Clymela - Regarding 2012, here is the short version: Obama’s popularity picks up beginning late summer 2010, and increasingly through through summer of 2012. It may begin to wane some in the fall 2012 but it picks up decidedly in December 2012 and beyond. There are some difficulties in late October 2012 and possibly many recounts for the election period (Mercury station on election day like in 2000). There is a Jupiter station square his Pluto for January 2013 which I see as very good (he has a natal 144 degree bi-quintile aspect between them, very creative and positive). Also Neptune will be trine his Venus in January activating the natal trine between them. So he seems very loved during January 2013, which I don’t think he would if he were to lose. All that being said, I still want to compare all this with whoever runs against him to be sure. This is a tough four years with so much Saturn going on in the US chart. He will have a progressed Mars square to Saturn in 2011 and early 2012, limiting his range of motion somewhat, which I see as the GOP slowing things down and making progress difficult, as usual. But his popularity grows nonetheless, and I would rather have Saturn impacting Mars (focusing and disciplining energy) than impacting Venus and the Moon and the Sun, as he has now.

I found myself passing on Saturn advice this weekend when someone I love was absolutely crushed by disappointment of the harshest kind. Lorrie - Thanks for clarifying that. From my perspective, it was hard to miss that he would win. But it is also very hard to not be influenced by personal bias. I wish I saw more to confirm the win in November 2012, but who knows what he will be in the middle of and what will be happening. The second win is very different from the first, and perhaps more ambivalent. Hard to say. Given the dramatic planets of the 2013 - 2017 term, I sure don’t want a Republican in the driver’s seat. Starlight - OK, the Israeli soldiers were attacked ON the ship. What were they doing on the ship in the first place? The ship, as I understand it, was in international waters and boarding by armed forces dropped from a helicopter is considered piracy. One defends oneself from piracy.

I understand Israel’s need to defend itself but they are taking it too far. I heard an Israeli ambassador (?) explaining that they (the Israeli’s) are more than happy to deliver supplies and/or unload the ships. But I also heard someone from Gaza say that the Israelis also screen what actually gets to Gaza when they do that ‘helpful’ chore.

Who to believe? Probably a little of both. Same goes for doubt.

But an armed boarding of a ship in international waters is still piracy and calls for self defense either way. Somalia, anyone?

Shadowhawk - It is hard to know what to believe. Israel, with its Saturn/Pluto/Mars square to the Sun, always feels threatened. This aspect leads to a kind of “kill or be killed” feeling. Nonetheless, the conditions in Gaza are appalling and the blockade is not helping Israel. This is from Center for American Progress on the story:

Similarly, Jeremy Ben-Ami of the pro-Israel, pro-peace group J Street encouraged “President Obama and other international and regional leaders to take today’s terrible news as an opportunity to engage even more forcefully in immediate efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

FOCUS ON GAZA: Though the ostensible reason for the Israeli and Egyptian-enforced siege on Gaza is to weaken the militant group Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since ejecting its Fatah rivals in 2007, it has actually had the reverse effect. Speaking from Gaza in April, Bassam Nasser of Catholic Relief Services said “the blockade enabled Hamas to become in complete control of everything in Gaza,” and that “closing Gaza and enabling goods or commodities to enter mostly only through the tunnels [has] enabled Hamas to have greater control.” Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Brian Katulis noted in a 2009 report, co-written with Marc Lynch and Robert Adler, that the blockade “has hurt the Palestinian people while not substantially inhibiting Hamas. And simultaneously it allows Hamas to blame persistent shortages on the Israeli blockade.” Though the Obama administration recognizes that Israel has genuine security concerns in regard to Hamas, it has encouraged Israel to ease some aspects of the blockade. In an earlier interview explaining the reason for the flotilla, Free Gaza chairperson Huwaida Arraf said “1.5 million Palestinians are trapped in the largest open-air prison in the world, denied basic rights, freedom of movement, the right to receive medical attention. … When our governments fail to uphold values that we believe in, to defend human rights, we believe that we the people of the global community must take action.”

The reports are conflicting about the attack. The IDF boarded the ship AFTE it had fired upon the Gaza relief vessel.

I think we might have an extreme case of over-reaction. And now the US is joining other nations, including Turkey in condemning Israel’s actions in the UN. That NEVER happens.

I think we have Avigdor Lieberman to blame for this. And he’s a right-wing extremist even more terrible than Netenyahu.

U.S. attorney general opens criminal probe of Gulf oil spill, nation’s worst

The U.S. government has launched a widely expected criminal and civil investigation into the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday, ratcheting up the pressure on the beleaguered British oil company.

“We have begun both a criminal as well as a civil investigation as is our obligation under the law,” Holder told reporters after meeting with state and federal prosecutors in New Orleans. “Our environmental laws are very clear.”

Federal agencies, including the FBI, are participating in the probe and “if we find evidence of illegal behavior, we will be forceful in our response,” he said, adding that prosecutors had a “sufficient basis” to start a criminal probe.

After taking a tour of the oil spill, Holder said he saw “oil for miles and miles, oil that we know has already affected plant and animal life among the coast.”

Washington (CNN) — If criminal suspects fail to invoke their right to remain silent, they have waived that right, a divided Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

In a sharp dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor called the court’s ruling a “major retreat” from protections against self-incrimination guaranteed by the original Miranda ruling.

“Criminal suspects must now unambiguously invoke their right to remain silent — which counterintuitively requires them to speak,” she said. “At the same time, suspects will be legally presumed to have waived their rights even if they have given no clear expression of their intent to do so. Those results, in my view, find no basis in Miranda or our subsequent cases and are inconsistent with the fair-trial principles on which those precedents are grounded.”

Sotomayor said the Thompkins ruling “turns Miranda upside down.” Justices John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer backed her conclusions.

My question is: if transporting humanitarian aide was the main motive - why didn’t the flotilla organizers allow Egypt to screen their goods and let it through, if they did not trust Israel to? Israel and Egypt both offered to do this.

There is a lot more I could say. It is fashionable to rush to judgment and blame Israel when the people of Gaza are also prisoners of their own people. Do you really think Hamas gives them a choice and allow them to disagree? Then, the press rushes to sensationalize what happened and use loaded words. The ships were asked to be screened for weapons and, when they refused, were warned they wouldn’t be allowed to get through. They disregarded this so the soldiers came on boar to stop them. The U.S. had a blockade against Cuba for many years, maybe it still does. What do you think the U.S. would have done in a similar situation, especially if their security was jeopardized? In 5 ships, the soldiers were allowed to dismount from the ropes peacefully. In the Turkish ship they were violently attacked. The soldiers were not prepared for this so tragedy happened when they tried to defend themselves. The Turkish government said they inspected and found no weapons. What was used against the soldiers were metal poles, metal chairs, axes, knives (and in one case, it was said a pistol was taken off a soldier and fired), all items used in construction and industry. I grieve for any loss of life and injuries and I hope the truth comes out whatever it is. But I do not expect Israel to be viewed fairly. The jury came in against Israel a long time ago - a jury populated by the Left Wing and students on campuses, and every situation will be viewed through that lens of stereotypes and generalizations. Why do people not question Hamas’ call for the destruction of Israel in its charter, or its bullying of their own people? I think you are right, relationships of all kinds will find new forms of expression in the future. In 2012, the U.S. progressed Moon will conjunct the U.S. natal Saturn in Libra, and of course at the end of this year trans. Saturn will conjunct the U.S. natal Saturn for its 29+year return. With Uranus in Aries, perhaps it means that the government (states included) will become more flexible in the laws regarding marriage.

Was just thinking about progressed U.S. Mars being retrograde for several years now. If Mars represents energy and oil is energy, then could not that gusher of oil in the Gulf represent energy turned in on itself? That progressed Mars at 18+ Libra is only 4 degrees away from this country’s natal Saturn. It will surely conjunct it as it further retrogrades and maybe that will signal the change in our society’s use of fossil fuels.

BP Oil Gusher is Just the Latest Assault on the Gulf of Mexico

I’m a fourth-generation fisherwoman from the Texas Gulf Coast, on a boat since I was eight. Over the last two decades, I’ve become a self-appointed watchdog of the chemical, oil, and gas corporations that are decimating the Gulf.

I hate to say it, but what I’m seeing now in the Gulf ain’t nothing new. The toxic releases, the lies, the cover-ups, the skimping on safety, the nonexistent documents, the “swinging door” with regulators, the deaths. Same ole same ole.

What is new is the massive nature of the oil gusher and the fact that it can’t be covered up because it’s ongoing and being videoed. This elephant can’t be swept under the carpet, but I’m sure if BP could, BP would.

There are politicians out there — we’ve all heard them — who say this oil spill is just one accident and one accident does not a case make. Heck, one plane crashes and you don’t stop flying, do ya? Well, this isn’t just one accident. This is the biggest flame among the thousands of fires set by Corporate America on its Sherman-like march across the Gulf.

I run an injured-workers group for people who got canned after they got sick or injured, and for whistleblowers and others who tried to make changes that their companies didn’t want. For many of them, there’s nobody to talk to except me — a high school–educated fisherwoman with a pile of kids and a broke-down truck. One worked in wastewater and said his supervisors were manipulating and hiding wastewater data, sometimes dumping outright or siphoning material out of test samples. Sometimes gauge needles were bent to keep them from showing what they should have been showing.

A few times, the worker had to wade through a diked wastewater area the size of two-city blocks with toxic waste coming over his boots. He lost his hard hat, lost his gloves, maggots were crawling everywhere, and right next to him was a high-voltage pump. He said a lot of days he thought he’d die, but telling didn’t do any good. As any good workers knows: You keep your mouth shut, ‘cause a good way to lose your job or lose your bonus is to report a worker injury or a safety violation.

Tell EPA: Take away BP’s billions in federal contracts

BP continues to stonewall the American people about the growing Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf, even while the company is reaping millions of dollars in profits a day from its other federal leases.

Prior to the current Gulf spill, EPA had linked BP to at least four instances of criminal misconduct, and BP has paid tens of millions in fines for environmental crimes. According to the public interest investigative journalists at Pro Publica, the EPA is considering re-evaluating BP and determining whether the company’s actions leading up to and following the Deep Horizon spill are evidence of an institutional problem inside BP that would qualify for debarment action.

If BP is hit with discretionary debarment, the company would lose valuable contracts for selling fuel to the military and would be prohibited from obtaining or renewing drilling leases on federal land. EPA could also cancel BP’s current federal leases. The impact on BP’s bottom line could be in the billions of dollars.

Thank you, Nancy. For the immediate future..I cannot wait until around June 17th- to the 25th of June and if the President only knew..I imagine he would be looking forward to it too. Those personal aspects he’s been going through have got to be hard especially if you’re the President of the United States. He’s hangin’ tough.

Saturn just turned direct which I was looking forward to and now Uranus is Rx so here we go!

We are certainly due, imv, for that pendulum to be swinging in another direction just a little bit and as we’re all wishing..I hope that means there is a miracle and a path to victory over the oil gusher all over the Gulf of Mexico.

Remember, solar arc Saturn will be exactly quincunx O’s Sun on June 6 and progressed Moon will be exactly sesquiquadrate his Saturn on June 17. Pr Mercury will be exactly square his Saturn on August 5. Each time one of these dates passes, another layer of the tension will begin to lighten up. The first 11 days of August will also see Saturn square Obama’s Venus for the last time.

Because of the above, I would be surprised if any of the attempts in the Gulf begin to be successful until after June 6, and even moreso until after June 17.

The reports of the diamond cutter being stuck right now are therefore not surprising.

Cha - Didn’t see your post when I posted mine. That this oil spill came with Uranus at 29 Pisces makes me think it will be a big influence in the push for a really alternative fuel future. I hope we don’t need yet another crisis during the next two crossings of 29 Pisces to drive the point home. At the rate we are going, those two crossing could still have to do with this spill!!

Obama gave a longish speech at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh today blaming most of the problems in the US on the Republicans and a few greedy Banks, extolling the fine reforms in healthcare and the financial system that he has been able to push through despise the minority opposition, and recalcitrant leftish supporters, after he saved the country by the unfortunate but unavoidably necessary bank bailouts.

He speech sounded good. And if you do not look too closely at what is going on, and how things are being run, and the lack of actual reform, you might have had a feel good moment. It was about as effectively staged as the case that George W made to the American people for the invasion of Iraq. And it was probably just as phony and self-serving.

I come away feeling that Lincoln had it exactly right. There will be a die hard group who will never lose faith in their party, or any of their chosen leaders, and will find desperate comfort in partisan blindness.

China Tells Defense Secretary Gates Not To Visit

China has ruled out a stopover by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who had hoped to make improved military ties with Beijing the centerpiece of his trip to Asia this week.

With certain exceptions, I’m sick of the press and the sensationist national discourse, too, as well as the SUBJECTIVE way news is reported all over the world. For what it’s worth, Hillary would have been an excellent president, too, and, as far as Republicans go, there are many good ones. I don’t quite trust them to not repeat Bush’s mistakes but there are still good ones (Senator Scott Brown, Representative from LA, Joseph Cao, I’m not sure about others like McCain and Lindsey Graham).

Me too clymela. It seems the shift to an elevated harmonic is always competing with the older denser energy that just doesn’t want to let go. But it will.

As the tide started turning, I heard him tell Jim Lehrer on the Newshour, without any shame or the slightest hesitation, that “Nobody ever said Saddam had ties to Al Quaida.”

Cameron said one reason he hoped his offer of access to private film-equipped deep-water vehicles would be taken up was to more accurately convey what was happening under water.

BREAKING: New Gulf Coast Drilling Approved While BP Oil Spill Continues To Grow

Just days after the moratorium on wells in deep water (like the Deepwater Horizon) was extended, the president quietly lifted a brief ban on drilling in shallow water just last week.

Despite the launch of a full criminal and civil investigation by the Department of Justice, the MMS decided today to grant the permit, allowing Bandon Oil and Gas to start drilling just 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana.

The eternal conflict - status quo vs. change. You can’t sell ‘change’ when the majority are happy with the status quo. But perhaps even when we see change as our only option we still cling to the life raft of the known…consensus reality. Like any death, the end of a cycle or way of life may require a period of mourning and inevitably, remembrance of the positive things about the past rise to the surface for a time in an emotional, nostalgic look back at ‘the way we were’. This is the ‘grief cycle’ described by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in her studies on death and dying. Uranus prefers a clean break and rarely looks back. But Saturn and Pluto are also part of the equation, and they have a very different quality of bringing about and adapting to endings and change. These are some thoughts that came to me as I read the following article by astrologer Dana Gerhardt about Uranus.

Most things prefer to stay just as they are. Change therefore requires instability. Disequilibrium. Anarchy. When a system is shattered, it responds by reorganizing itself. That’s how paradigm leaps occur. Without some discomfort in our Uranus house, or through the planets it aspects, our breakthrough thinking may never be evoked. Why would we challenge the status quo, if we weren’t at first unhappy with it? With Uranus, we have to expect some alienation, dislocation, even trauma. We might forgive therefore the neurotic styles often associated with this archetype-the aloofness, the absent-mindedness, the restlessness, the arrogance, the stubbornness, the revolutionary zeal. LSU to get BP grant for oil spill research

Louisiana State University’s School of the Coast and Environment will be the first recipient of a grant from BP under what could become a $500 million, 10-year program to gather scientific information about the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the response to the spill on the marine and shoreline environment of the Gulf of Mexico, BP officials announced Monday.

Christopher D’Elia, dean of LSU’s School of the Coast and Environment, said he expects the first money to pay for research into what has become one of the most troublesome concerns of the spill response — determining the effects of using hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic dispersants on oil at and below the surface of the ocean.

D’Elia said the school had proposed that and several other research areas to BP officials during a recent meeting, and the company seemed most interested in the dispersant work.

BP chief Tony Hayward sold shares weeks before oil spill

Tony Hayward cashed in about a third of his holding in the company one month before a well on the Deepwater Horizon rig burst, causing an environmental disaster.

Mr Hayward, whose pay package is £4 million a year, then paid off the mortgage on his family’s mansion in Kent, which is estimated to be valued at more than £1.2 million.

There is no suggestion that he acted improperly or had prior knowledge that the company was to face the biggest setback in its history.

His decision, however, means he avoided losing more than £423,000 when BP’s share price plunged after the oil spill began six weeks ago.

This news of Tony Hayward has me wondering: when i first heard of the “explosion” I thought that it was caused by a bomb. The BP oil spill is the perfect metaphor for Barack Obama’s presidency so far. His first 500 days in office have been—with the significant exception of health-care reform—consumed in cleaning up the messes left by his predecessors in the financial sector, the auto business, Afghanistan, and now the oil and gas industry, where “regulators” in the Denver office of the Minerals Management Service under President Bush were literally sleeping with the industry reps they were supposed to be licensing. Obama’s fate is to head up what Donald Regan (Ronald Reagan’s chief of staff) called “the shovel brigade”—the crew cleaning up the dung when the elephants leave the circus.

And interestingly, Obama’s progressed Sun is in the 29th degree of Virgo, moving into Libra just as this long Saturn stress period ends in late August.

Beyond that, being an Aquarian myself, I am not interested in Obama emoting. I am so very tired of hearing this crap. Obama under three Saturn progressions and one Saturn transit is not at his most charismatic. He will be back in late August - with more shine to his words and more cadence in his speaking. Until then, he just has clean-up work to do. So let him get to it!

‘I am after the truth’ wrote on May 31st that he thinks he is a progressive, but hasn’t quite made up his mind. ‘I am after the truth’ is a recovering Ron Paul supporter and he had some questions about progressives that I wasn’t able to answer for reasons having to do with life off the computer. I read that entry and thought it prudent to post David Sirota’s explanation of the difference between today’s “liberals” and true progressives, and expand upon a comment that rightly pointed out how many of today’s “progressives” aren’t. In answer to the questions IAATT put forth:

1. Are progressives and liberals the same thing?

No, they’re not. As Sirota and others have explained, there is a distinct ideological difference between liberals and progressives. In two writings, Sirota makes the case for said differences. The first is a 2005 piece that originally appeared on The Huffington Post web site. Simply put, he writes:

It seems to me that traditional “liberals” in our current parlance are those who focus on using taxpayer money to help better society. A “progressive” [sic] are those who focus on using government power to make large institutions play by a set of rules.

To put it in more concrete terms – a liberal solution to some of our current problems with high energy costs would be to increase funding for programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). A more “progressive” solution would be to increase LIHEAP but also crack down on price gouging and pass laws better-regulating the oil industry’s profiteering and market manipulation tactics. A liberal policy towards prescription drugs is one that would throw a lot of taxpayer cash at the pharmaceutical industry to get them to provide medicine to the poor; A progressive prescription drug policy would be one that centered around price regulations and bulk purchasing in order to force down the actual cost of medicine in America (much of which was originally developed with taxpayer R&D money).

Sirota goes on to explain how liberals today really distance themselves from progressive ideals because of the requirement that they use government to make large corporations abide by rules and regulations that limit their ability to operate however they like.

They signed industry-backed letters telling the FCC to abandon efforts to protect Internet users by prohibiting big companies from blocking Internet traffic.

Not only is this letter an attack on net neutrality, but by signing the industry letter, they are attempting to drastically undercut the FCC’s ability to make a fast, affordable and open Internet available to everyone in America. They are actually taking a position against the interests of rural and low-income communities.

This is unacceptable.

Pat, I’m sure you know that you can voice your opposition on the Credo link you posted., I did so and hope others will also.

If you combine that with Comcast’s attempting to acquire NBC Univeral, it’s worse than too-big-to-fail banks and insssurance companies telling me what drugs I can take.

Per Marta’s post on David Sirota’s distinctions between Liberals and Progressives, this may very well be the case, but I would think that all groups, parties, organizations, mature people would have as its goal the creation and adherence to responsible rules and corresponding accountability and justice when they are broken.

As far as Obama getting to work, I think the most we can expect to get from Obama is his best. Is he doing his best? He looks to me like he is — but he’s learning along the way, too. I see him as the kind of person who explores options, thinks things over carefully and gets a grip on the problem. This happens to be a very Neptunian and unusual problem - I just hope he is acting with the degree of urgency the situation merits. We like him for his values and intelligence - I never thought he was developed to the point of being what I consider a really strong leader. Crises define leaders and make them stronger. He’s not there yet - but then again, maybe that’s not a totally fair assumption - when I think about my favorite Native American saying to never judge someone until you walk in their shoes. And then there’s the philosophy that things are unfolding as they are meant to.

Just a “little” scarey…

Oh Gosh…

I was thinking about how many have a “need” to see President Obama showing more emotion about the BP situation today. What came to me is that I truly trust that he is doing what he can to address the situation.

I don’t need to see him looking all bummed out to know that his focus is where it needs to be. I’ve also had enough of bullshit emoting from all kinds of public officials in days gone by and they haven’t done one thing to help. Just words.

Call me an “Obamabot” if you want and that’s fine but I really do trust that he is working toward the highest good. Just because it doesn’t look like what we think it should (or whatever BS pretense presidents past have shown) doesn’t mean that he’s not on it.

Why anyone would want that job is so beyond me. Then again, I’m not a competitive person who likes the spotlight. I do what I can in my own little world and keep looking for a higher vibration. :)

I voted for Obama, but I’m not at all happy with his handling of the spill, particularly after reading that Rolling Stone article. The Bush administration is obviously very much to blame, but it was naive of me to think Obama would be less beholden to the oil industry than Bush. What a disappointment.
