There is something so compelling about Sarah Palin. Whether you adore her every utterance or imbibe her ignorance and incoherence like an addictive cocktail, it is hard to turn away from her image on the screen. Those who love her clearly identify with her well-crafted role as a victim – of the media, of late night comedians, of the liberal elite, of big government, of paying taxes, of politics as usual, etc. In fact, much of the GOP mindset of late is little more than a laundry list of grievances describing how unfairly they are treated in virtually every arena. To them, Sarah Palin has become the vanguard in their long-suffering battle against an unjust, Democratically-run world.
Sarah Palin’s meteoric rise on the national scene began when John McCain put her on the GOP ticket in late August 2008. Despite how glaring her limitations seem to many of us, she remains extraordinarily beloved among the core group who vote in Republican primaries. Astrologically (2/11/64,4:40 PM, Sandpoint, Idaho), her popularity and glamour in 2008 and 2009 are easy to understand: progressed Venus square the Sun (22Aquarius20), peaking in early November 2008, and progressed Venus square natal Mars (23Aquarius37), peaking in December 2009. In addition, transiting Pluto is currently square her Venus (1Aries22) through early November 2009, bringing with it the sense that everyone is watching and judging her, but also increasing the public’s fascination and obsession with her.
The most difficult transit at present, one with many hidden brambles, is Neptune’s crossing of Palin’s natal Saturn (25Aquarius12), activating the natal square between them. This aspect continues to be very strong through mid-August and will return in December 2009 and January 2010. It activates one of the central conflicts in her chart: the struggle between pragmatic ambitions (Saturn/Sun/Mars conjunction), on the one hand, and grandiose aspirations tinged with self-inflated drama (Neptune), on the other. With Neptune conjunct her Sun/Mars conjunction through the 2008 election cycle and into January 2009, followed by Neptune conjunct her Saturn for the duration of 2009 and early 2010, this entire period in her life has been flavored with unrealistic expectation and hyperbolic rhetoric. In fact, the Neptunian view from Wasila at the moment is that she will make lots of money, continue to be very popular, and possibly even run for president in 2012. Unfortunately, Neptune’s dreams often tend to prove more illusion than reality.
By early November 2009, Saturn will move to oppose Palin’s Venus (1Aries22), continuing through early August 2010. Beginning in August 2010 for about a year, progressed Venus will move into a conjunction with her natal Saturn (25Aquarius12). Both of these aspects suggest a significant lessening of popularity and public support through 2010 and early 2011. With the Neptune influence waning after January 2010, next year is likely to see the squashing of her grandiose and unrealistic plans and some significant difficulties.
There will be, however, one last hurrah for Palin during later 2011 through May 2012. With progressed Mars conjunct natal Venus (1Aries22), further activated by transiting Uranus conjunct natal Venus, especially potent in March and April 2011 and from October 2011 through January 2012, we may see her star briefly rise again, especially in late 2011 through May 2012, before it flames out for good. It is not clear if she will be running for president or just supporting those who are running on the GOP ticket in 2012, but she will lose her flare and her extraordinary charisma after May of that year as progressed mars begins to separate from Venus. The transiting Saturn square to her natal Moon (4Aquarius14) in early November and conjunct her IC (6Scorpio54) in later November 2012, suggest that her candidates (or candidacy) in the 2012 election are not successful. Progressed Moon conjunct natal Saturn in January 2013 further confirms this scenario.
