In the past few days, the nation of Egypt has been engulfed in the flames of civil unrest, erupting as the military rulers unleash their weaponry against camped protesters and crowds of dissenters opposed to the new regime. Over 700 Muslim Brotherhood supporters of deposed Mohammed Morsi have been killed thus far, while the intolerant and violent response to their defiance continues. This period of upheaval began on June 30, resulting in the July 3 overthrow of President Morsi by the Egyptian military, and initially supported by millions of anti-Morsi protesters in the street. Since the coup, however, the pro-Morsi faction has become increasingly resistant, resulting in the heavy-handed repression and brutality of the military-backed interim government.
Astrologically, the story unfolding in Egypt is yet another iteration of the reigning Uranus/Pluto square and this summer’s powerful triggering of that very destabilizing planetary combination. As noted on this site in Trifecta posted on June 30, we are now in the midst of the third and most potent of this season’s translations of the Uranus/Pluto square. The first began with the coup itself when the Sun opposed Pluto and made a square to Uranus (June 30 to July 4). Most recently, the planet Jupiter has opposed Pluto and is now moving to square Uranus, the combined impact covering roughly from August 2 through August 20.
The Uranus/Pluto square brings revolutionary tension and a desire to depose the status quo into a direct conflict with a repressive and strong-armed power structure. The military overthrow of the Morsi government was a Uranus-flavored ousting of an increasingly controlling and inflexible Plutonian-type of regime. But Uranus also points to a unilateral aggression and an unwillingness to bend that is becoming the hallmark of the military-led government. Moreover, as the rebellious (Uranian) desire for change spreads to the pro-Morsi demonstrators, the increasingly draconian force associated with Pluto is being used to quell the protests and take control of the country.
The chart for the interim government in Egypt bears within it a nearly exact Sun (12Cancer30) square to Uranus (12Aries27), forming a T-square to Pluto (10Capricorn14). Thus, the military regime carries within it the willingness to ride roughshod over anyone in its way and a strong sense of purpose undeterred by any opposition that is derived from this potent configuration. The current Jupiter transit, moving from an opposition to Pluto to a square with Uranus, is magnifying these traits and expanding the reach and power of the dominating government. It will complete the crossing of the Sun/Uranus square in the interim government chart by August 23, after which this phase of expanded and reckless oppression may begin to subside.
It should be noted, however, that the interim government’s Sun/Uranus square will be crossed again by Jupiter, this time in league with transiting Pluto in late January and early February 2014. In addition, Uranus will return to its natal position in March 2014, while Jupiter will cross the Sun for the final time in April. Finally, Pluto will complete the T-square in May and June 2014. In other words, if the military regime is still in power and this chart remains active throughout the spring of 2014, we can expect an even bigger and more explosive power grab than we have seen recently. For now, elections are expected around February 2014, shortly after the transiting Jupiter/Pluto opposition lights up the Sun/Uranus square in the government chart in late January. Once a new president comes into power, the chart for the interim government will no longer be relevant. Let us hope that this extraordinarily potent Jupiter/Pluto combination in early 2014 will be the precursor to an historical election and not the crushing despotism that it could easily imply.
In the US chart, transiting Saturn is at present in a square to the US Node (6Leo36) from August 8 through August 24. This configuration points to difficulties and tensions in relationships with other countries. Saturn often implies a contraction of activity due to significant problems. The cancellation of a meeting between Vladimir Putin and President Obama, as well as the cancellation of war games with the Egyptian military would therefore seem to stem from this aspect. In addition, the general difficulty of how to deal with the current destabilization of Egypt and the worsening situation there would also seem to be part of it.
The week covering August 23 through August 29 will bring with it the first of three crossings of Jupiter to the US Sun (13Cancer19). The same Jupiter transit will be in a semisquare with Israel’s Mars (28Leo19), a square with Vladimir Putin’s Sun (13Libra55), as well as a conjunction to Mars (13Cancer52) and square with Uranus (12Aries24) in the chart for Hassan Rouhani becoming president of Iran (8/3/2013). Thus, it is well worth watching how events unfold during these latter days in August.
For the US, we can expect something that heightens optimism and a feeling of success. There is often a chest-thumping patriotism that comes with Jupiter aspects to the US Sun. Given the other charts that are impacted by Jupiter at the same time, perhaps we will see some tensions on the world stage seem to be resolved, at least for that week.
Jupiter will return to cross the US Sun from January 15 through January 22, and again in April 2014. It is the April crossing that is likely to yield the most historical and dramatic impact, as Jupiter joins the Uranus square to the US Sun (3/30 to 4/18/14) and the Pluto opposition to the US Sun (2/1 to 5/19/14), putting the US at the epicenter of the volatile and potent Uranus/Pluto square as it unfolds next year.
The US government, from February through May during the transiting Pluto opposition to the US Sun, is likely to be embroiled in high-stakes power struggles, both domestic and foreign, that will dwarf anything previous in the Obama administration. While Jupiter is also active in April, American patriotism and its souped-up sense of superpower mojo will increase exponentially. Moreover, the coming drama will be part of the exceptionally prolonged Jupiter square to Uranus that will cover from mid-February through April 20, 2014, promising a cascade of transformative, swift, unexpected and decisive events in many parts of the world.
We are now in the midst of the first Jupiter/Uranus square (8/16 to 8/21) and soon to experience the first crossing of Jupiter to the US Sun (8/23 to 8/29). When these aspects return to us in the late winter and spring of 2014, they will be on steroids, due to the combined impact of Uranus, Pluto, Mars and Jupiter, often acting in concert. The next few weeks will give us the first hints of what to expect when the potent configurations of 2014 begin to unfold.
