The second Obama administration has begun with a series of events that indicate the harsh and angry tone likely during the next four years. The vituperative and petty GOP attacks against Secretary of Defense-nominee Chuck Hagel, a former Senator and fellow Republican, for essentially espousing the foreign policy of the president, have been labeled “unprecedented”. So too is the attempt to filibuster his nomination by extraordinary and absurd demands for financial minutia, as well as copies of any speech he may have given in the past several years.
More recently, the fierce questioning and angry protests during the nomination hearing of John Brennan to head the CIA, have been compounded by the unanticipated exposure of a memo legally justifying the killing of Americans overseas who are deeply involved in the leadership of Al Qaeda. Meanwhile, after four years of President Obama’s relatively effective drone war targeting terrorists, there is now suddenly erupting, mostly from the Left, outraged questioning about the morality of these strikes and the killing of American-al Qaeda leaders without due process.
This pattern of conflict between the people and the administration’s more aggressive polices may be seen in the Inaugural chart in the first house Moon (19Taurus36) square 
to the tenth house Mars (20Aquarius13). This natal Inaugural aspect is made even more dangerous with natal Uranus (5Aries14) at the midpoint of the Moon and Mars, as well as semisquare to both, implying sudden and powerful attacks that can be very destabilizing and transformative. With the progressed Moon reaching the exact square to Mars as of February 9 and triggered by the transit of the Sun to natal Inaugural Mars on February 7 and February 8, we have seen the energy of this aspect come to life in the past few weeks and especially the past few days. Although the dramatic contention from this aspect is likely to dissipate after February 9, the transiting Node is moving to square Inaugural Mars from February 11 through February 22, which may heighten some of the Obama administration’s more assertive tendencies over the next few weeks.
There are several other circumstances that also point to the combative energy patterns of the second term. On January 30, Israel bombed inside Syria to thwart an arms shipment to Hezbollah in Lebanon. More recently, Israel has indicated it will not hesitate to aggressively destroy any weapons shipments with the same destination. Although clearly understandable and justified from Israel’s perspective, there is nonetheless fear that further attacks could escalate into a wider Middle Eastern war, especially with Syria already embroiled in a civil war that is threatening to spill over its borders.
The past few weeks have also seen a significant spike in conflict in Iraq along the fractious line of the old Sunni/Shiite rivalry. Moreover, under the culmination of tension in the Inaugural chart on February 8 and 9, we have had yet another climate change-induced super storm: a historically huge and crippling snow storm in the North East.
The irritability and anger of the Moon/Mars square is likely to be an ongoing issue during the second Obama term. It will often be ignited by sudden, unexpected (Uranus) events, such as the appearance of the controversial memo. Attacks may be political or stem from some element of citizen outrage or dissatisfaction, or they may be in the international arena directly impacting American interests or American friends. Severe climate change events are also likely. The mood will be far edgier and harsher than in the first term. None of this is unexpected given the potency of the full force of the Uranus/Pluto square that is still unfolding over the next two years, but it is underlined and further defined by these configurations in the Inaugural chart.
On the positive side, there are three natal aspects in the Inaugural chart that will build in strength through progression during defined periods in this term, and that point to support for the president in the midst of some agitated and difficult times. The progressed Inaugural Ascendant will trine natal Venus (14Capricorn27) from early August 2013 through early May 2014. Progressed Mercury will move into a trine with natal Inaugural Jupiter (6Gemini28) from late November 2014 through early July 2015. And finally, progressed Venus will move to trine the natal Inaugural Moon (19Taurus35) from late May 2016 until the next Inauguration.
The latter aspect, along with several in Obama’s natal chart (progressed Venus conjunct natal Pluto, solar arc Venus conjunct natal Uranus, solar arc Pluto square natal Jupiter), 
suggests a significant degree of popularity during the president’s last year in office after weathering the slings and arrows of the Uranus/Pluto square and all the turmoil and transformation it will have let loose. I consider this cluster of uplifting aspects in Obama’s chart in 2016 a very hopeful sign for the country, pointing to the US getting through the fireworks and disruptions of an historical Uranus/Pluto configuration successfully and effectively, despite any difficulties along the way.

There are minor transiting planets and also aspects within the U.S. natal (Sibly) chart that support your outlook and give nuances of meaning to the big picture. Today’s New Moon (Sun and Moon)is conjunct a minor astral body called Damocles and square a less minor body called Sedna, among others, that I thought might interest you and your readers.
In the legend of Damocles, he is a member of the court of Dionysus, ruler of a Sicilean city circa 300 BC. He tells Dionysus that it must be wonderful to live among such beauty and wealth and so the ruler offers Damocles the chance to experience that himself. Once Damocles has settled into the ruler’s place of honor, he looks up to see a sword hanging over his head, suspended by a single hair-thin thread. From this, he learn’s that a ruler’s life may look grand but it is full of uncertainty and danger. Today we would call that Imminent Danger.
Neptune (22 Virgo) and Mercury (24 Cancer) in the U.S. natal chart are sextile and they both quincunx natal Damocles (24 Aquarius) revealing an inherent feeling of imminent danger (Damocles) which is fueled by illusional thinking (Neptune-Mercury). That would be the negative characteristic. A more positive view might be that caution (Cancer), careful (Virgo) and compassionate (Neptune) thinking (Mercury) will prevent a gruesome ending (sword of Damocles) to our nation.
Transiting Sedna at 22 Taurus is conjunct the degree where Saturn and Jupiter started their 20 year cycle with a conjunction in 2000. Taurus being the sign of values and Saturn and Jupiter representing societies (expansion and containment),it is clear we are more than half-way through a process of re-evaluation on many social fronts. Sedna is a ruler over deep waters and the life within them. She is one of many rulers over water in mythology, and many of them are prominent during this period, especially Neptune. By squaring the Sun and Moon in Aquarius today, she signifies that this month something water-related will come to the planet’s attention. In the U.S. chart natal Vesta (investment)at 19 Taurus and natal Atlantis (sinking in water)at 23 Taurus suggest that we need to consider how we as a country have invested in our water supply and how it affects our citizenry. Elizabeth – I see some room for cautious optimism for the 2014 election, but I will need to do a much more in-depth workup before I say anything definitively. Don’t get your hopes up. It could be that we just have a less crippling minority. The California cop-killing-cop has obvious irony and paradox written all over the headlines. Heinous as his actions have been, it smells like there is something more insidious and corrupt to the story – perhaps a man wrongly-accused/punished? I am wondering if the guy was ganged-up on by other cops or his department or bullied in some other fashion which caused something to finally just snap. The rampage he has set upon has the feeling of deep vindictiveness and rage. I can’t help but to wonder the untold reasons as to why he was dismissed from the force and exactly how it came about; pure speculation on my part.
Hearing Lindsey Graham say he would block Hagel and Brennan has me concerned. I never wished anyone would drop off the face of the Earth but Lindsey Graham has taken me there. What is the problem with this man? Can he really hold these nominations hostage to his “say Uncle”?
Maybe they are holding the details of the cop killing cop’s firing back until he is apprehended. He is already full of rage, but maybe they don’t want to enrage him further. It would be interesting to hear the details. Clearly, he feels aggrieved, although that proves nothing. It has to be really freaking the LA police out to know this guy is out there on a one-man rampage against them.

Any change these days in long-time structures will be the result of Pluto in Capricorn. Yesterday’s New Moon in Aquarius square the Moon’s nodes signaled an opportunity to move up the evolutionary ladder and, to me, that is the takeaway from the Pope’s resignation. Look closely and you will see not only the sextile between Uranus (surprise) and Jupiter (church), but the very tight septile between Neptune (faith) and Pluto(transformation). Septiles are 1/7 of a circle and in astrology represent the forces of karmic destiny and mysticism.
In the chart for the solar eclipse last November there was a trine between Saturn (rigidity) in Scorpio, Chiron (awareness) in Pisces and Ceres (mother church) in Cancer. Late in April we will start a new eclipse season with a lunar eclipse in Scorpio which is trine Neptune and opposite the Sun conjunct Mars.
In May, the solar eclipse in Taurus is very near the degree where the Saturn-Jupiter societal cycle began anew in 2000. Taurus is the sign of what we value and societies are changing rapidly. That solar eclipse is 10 days before the next exact Uranus-Pluto square, and I believe it points to a move forward and upward for the Catholic Church. Perhaps the new Pope will hail from one of the African countries signifying a rebith in the Catholic faith. Changes are coming about because of the need to balance the masculine energies with the feminine energies.
Yesterday’s New Moon chart had a triple conjunction between Mars, Mercury and Chiron in Pisces which the Moon passed over this morning. These planets are square Jupiter (understanding, religion) in Gemini, with Mars forming the tightest aspect now. They are all moving forward to sextile Pluto and trine Saturn, each at it’s own pace. First Mercury spreading the news, then Mars to stimulate emotions, and finally Chiron will raise our consciousness to assimilate the enormity of this societal change. There will be more to come.

Thanks Noelle. Good to know what Grahm is doing isn’t a filibuster and only a “hold”. Although I can’t stand the R’s tactics I have to hand it to them that they know how to marshall whatever power they can to do whatever they want and it irritates me that Dems do is complain or get offeneded or outraged. But the Dems really don’t know how to wield power and that is something I can not respect. I think back to when the Dems had the Presidency, the House and the Senate and they turned off so many Dems by their inaction that Dems sat out in 2010 and we lost the House and many governorships which led to the R’s gerrymandering all over the country to cement their power in the House. Dems would never have done that, which some people would respect because they think politics should be above that. Politics is about the use of power. And I am so so glad that our President is finally stepping up to the plate and using his power to effect change. This is the mark of a leader, I respect that and believe that history will regard him well for it.

Dorner sounds like he’s “snapped” and I’m sorry to see this cause tragedies and murders. I also feel that the LAPD, who he says haven’t changed since Rodney King, probably do some really biased, corrupt, unethical things (like all police depts) and hope something comes of this to change that (wishful thinking). But Dorner was not targeting “lesbians,” Lorrie, if you read those lines carefully. I think he perceived some of the women in power were misusing their power. He was careful to say that they are not feminists but “misandrist.” I’ve never heard that phrase but obviously he meant they hate men and I’ll bet some just might.

With regard to the Papal Conclave, Uranus by transit often brings unexpected events or crises. Located in the 8th house of transformation, Uranus transits can symbolize the passing of one pope and the election of his successor. Sharon – Re. shelter adoptions, during our peak season, one of our local car dealers donated $5,000 to underwrite adoption fees so we were able to offer $15 adoptions for adult dogs & cats over 5 mos. & dogs over 25 lbs. (small breed dogs are premium here, we have too many pit bull mixes). Personally, I think there should be some nominal fee rather than “no cost” and I would up the age to one year or older. The car dealer benefited from the publicity.
So much to catch up with but i awakened with the thought: does anyone know the birth date of the new leader of North Korea? I have heard that he is 30 and I was thinking that if he remains close to his first Saturn return he is certainly acting provocatively even endangering not only himself but his citizens as well.

Sharon – Another thing our shelter did was open a thrift shop. As a non-profit they resell donations without taxes. The shelter and off-site locations also sell products (toys, collars, leashes, etc.) which people adopting purchase tax-free for their animals.
Teresa & Will, Ashley Judd also knows how to work media and she will come across as the kind of person people would relate with and enjoy rather than that bitter old iguana. He will have the machine working overtime on his behalf. She will have the power of her personality and her ability to connect with people.

Thanks so much for the link re: Pope Benedict and the Dell article too (which I have!) In my comment upthread I discussed how the Pope’s resignation tied into the November Solar Eclipse chart, but since then I thought there might be a connection to the November Lunar Eclipse too. Recently Jupiter stationed direct at 6 Gemini. In the December Solstice chart (12/21/12) Venus was at 6 Sagittarius. The Lunar Eclipse last November was 6 Gemini opposite the Sun at 6 Sagittarius. Now I see that Pope Benedict has natal Saturn at 6 Sagittarius.
A couple of remarkable comparisons between the Vatican chart (6/7/1929) and Sunday’s New Moon chart has taken my breath away. .
1) The Vatican chart has Uranus at 10 Aries and Pallas-Athene at 5 Aries. The New Moon chart has Uranus at 5 Aries and Pallas-Athene at 10 Aries.
2) The Vatican north node is 21 Taurus and the south node is 21 Scorpio. The New Moon on Sunday has the north node at 21 Scorpio and south node at 21 Taurus.

The United States Postal Service announced last week that due to budget shortfalls, mail will no longer be delivered on Saturdays starting in August.
It’s true the post office faces financial challenges. But the financial problems are in large part a direct result of an onerous and ill-considered 2006 law called the “Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act” (PAEA) that mandates pre-funding the postal service retiree health care and pension benefits for 75 years — something that no other government agency or private company is forced to do.
The vast majority — 85% — of the budget red ink comes from this pre-funding mandate despite the fact that, according to the post office Inspector General, the pension is over-funded and reserves for retiree health care are far higher than the federal government as a whole, the military and almost all Fortune 1000 companies.
Even with the declining levels of “snail mail,” the post office still manages to deliver to every household in America a total of 563 million pieces of mail for an incredibly low cost. It does it efficiently, and without a penny of taxpayer money.
But it’s that very self-sufficiency that drove Congressional Republicans to hatch a long-term plan to destroy the agency by starving it of the ability to maintain services. By forcing the USPS to save an outrageous and unneeded nest-egg, the agency has been increasingly removed from revenues which would help it keep pace with the innovation of FedEx and UPS.
Undermining public services is exactly what Republicans have been doing since the Reagan-era, by cutting off normal, healthy revenues for any reason they can find — even if it requires doing something that in any other circumstance would be branded as total lunacy. FedEx and UPS would never be required to meet the same savings requirements as the USPS.
By making the public believe that government services are underfunded and poorly managed, Republicans can force more cuts, and eventually privatize services altogether, handing over public goods to private corporations that enrich a select few at the expense of many.
And if the USPS dies, FedEx and UPS will have been delivered an entire, centuries-old industry at wholesale cost.
But all of this can be avoided by making simple and popular reforms to the postal service like those proposed last year in a bill by Delaware Senator Thomas Carper. His bill would have allowed the USPS to stretch out payments for future retirees for the next 40 years, while recouping $11 billion the government has overcharged the postal service.

Sharon, I agree with you. I think they are both good men and college was a long, long time ago. I’m not the person I was then and I don’t think they are either.
What I worry about is the do-nothing, obstructionist, mean-spiiritedness of so many Republicans. It’s really hard to fathom how they can be against raising the minimum wage, assisting women who have been violated, wanting to close tax loop holes, some sort of gun violence legislation.
I really admire Obama for not getting discouraged. Just watching John Bohner last night would be enough to discourage me and I swear Boehner yanked the president’s arm at the end when they shook hands.
Boeher was REALLY unhappy and in fact I think there was some physical/emotional/mental health issues going on. He’s under lots of pressure from the Tea Party and Rand Paul, for one thing, said that the Sequester should not be stopped and was not enough. I did wonder why Obama came up with the list of extra expenses right now when there are important issues of the economy, immigration and gun violence to deal with. Pre-K for everyone is a nice idea but is it backed up by research that says it does any good? I know he is trying to break the cycle of poverty in the inner cities but was last night the time. We don’t want the Republicans to accuse us of more spending and taking away the tax payers hard-earned dollar, etc. Yes, even George Bush was a good man underneath some of his really bad and immature ideas, some of which he may have been pressured or manipulated into. But he was the president and he thought in terms of how to help the country.

I agree with your intuition about Boehner and I guess it’s been said before here – he does seem like an alcoholic….it’s just hard to believe he could reach such a high position under those circumstances. As Patty’s post showed, he looked extremely unhappy and dysfunctional, and probably afraid to do anything supportive of the president because Boehner’s in such a precarious position and probably won’t be speaker too much longer. Whether it’s the alcohol, smoking, stress, he just looks unhealthy.
That’s probably what the tan is meant to mask…

Children who are suffering from food insecurity do not perform well academically, display unacceptable behavior, and has poor attendance due to illness or unexcused absences.
Fortunately, Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland launched the BackPack Program to help alleviate childhood hunger. Nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods are sent home in backpacks on Friday afternoons to ensure the child has something to eat until they return for breakfast on Monday morning.

Lorrie, thanks for the Addicting Info link on Harry Reid. I’ve always liked Harry but was disappointed he didn’t go for stronger filibuster reform at the start of the current session. But if making these GOP prima donnas filibuster Hagel (first time for a cabinet nominee) in broad daylight, by refusing to acknowledge their “holds”, successfully gets Hagel approved, I will start to think of him again as a quiet, sly old fox.

You can bet your “I’m angry-at-Republicans” (loved it) bottom dollar that incinerating Dorner was a planned tactic. I am painting with broad strokes here – but there is a predictable mentality among most cops that includes pronounced personality traits inclusive rigid-thinking, narcissism, cruelty and sadism. It seems to be part of their ethos as a subculture. There is also widespread abuse of anabolic steroids for the more macho-challenged amongst them (many) which leads to “roid-rage” and fans the fire (sic). There wasn’t a shred of doubt in my mind that the plan was to roast Dorner. My hope is that there will be much more damning evidence pointing to departmental malfeasance, group think and subcultural skullduggery in California law enforcement.

Noelle, I don’t disagree with a lot of what you say, but Harry Reid had some old guard democrats that weren’t behind him on filibuster reform, like Feinstein and Levin. If his own side is not going to back him up, I don’t think all the blame can be laid at his feet. Anyway, though I’m disappointed in the lack of true filibuster reform, Harry has his points. He’s managed to get some good legislation through the Senate despite implacable opposition from the other side. Besides, he IS a politician.

It seems that with his resignation announced, the Pope, whose given name is Joseph Ratzinger, has a meeting with the Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano on February 23 to beg for immunity against prosecution for allegations of child sex crimes. Apparently, this hastily arranged meeting, and likely the resignation as well, are the result of a supposed note received by the Vatican from an undisclosed European government that stated that there are plans to issue a warrant for the Pope’s arrest. This letter was allegedly received on February 4, and Ratzinger resigned a week later.

Yesterday a federal judge approved an agreement for Transocean Ltd.(Deepwater Horizon) to pay $400 million in criminal penalties due to the Gulf oil spill, which doesn’t include plaintiff actions for damages. Transocean had been shielded by it’s contract wih BP before this.
Last Sunday’s New Moon at 21 Aquarius squared the nodes of the Moon (south node Taurus = $$)(north node Scorpio = shared resources), and as well, transiting Sedna, ruler of deep water and the life it holds.

Transiting Vesta (investments) was at 21 Leo at the time of the Gulf disaster, square Sedna, quincunx Jupiter, and now opposite last Sunday’s New Moon at 21 Aquarius. At the time of that New Moon, Vesta was at 10 Gemini at the apex of a yod (aka Finger of God) with Saturn (11 Scorpio) and Pluto (10 Capricorn).

Re: Fracking poisoning the waters of life. I think we need to watch Sedna and as well, Nessus = poisoning(in the Sibly chart he is conjunct Ceres and square Uranus). As a matter of fact, the Sunday New Moon in Aquarius was also very close to TRANSITING Nessus (25 Aquarius) as well as square Sedna.
Presently the progressed U.S. Sun (consciousness) and the transiting Chiron (awareness through wounding) are both conjunct the U.S. centaur Nessus (9 Pisces) and Ceres (8 Pisces) and square the U.S. Uranus (8 Gemini). With transiting Jupiter, Vesta and Ceres in Gemini too, the U.S Uranus will be facilitating a speedy understanding in this country regarding our investments in Mother Earth and her resources.

Hey, for those of you who have pondered the reason(s) why the Pope decided to resign, consider this. Transiting Jupiter has been in the degree opposite his natal Saturn’s degree for 40 days and 40 nights. I wasn’t the devil that made him do it!
In fact, Jupiter stationed direct on that degree (opposite his Saturn), and Venus was in the same degree (6+ Sagittarius) as the Pope’s Saturn when the Winter Solstice (12/21/12) took place. Venus was opposite Jupiter (church) who was at the apex of a yod with Saturn (career) and Pluto (the end) in the Solstice chart.
Finally, late last November there was a Lunar Eclipse at 6+ Gemini opposite his natal Saturn. That would have given him an emotional perspective, something hidden within, that the transiting Sun (consciousness) conjunct his Saturn would have opened him up to. Saturn represses feelings and that eclipse must have forced him to experience his own feelings. From that point in late November, to the December Solstice with Venus on his Saturn, and finally the long, long stay of Jupiter (understanding the big picture) opposite his Saturn, plus Jupiter’s intense energy due to the station direct, probably gave him the push he needed to turn in his resignation. What d’ya think?

The astrology you presented and interpreted for the Ratz sure didn’t help him. Nonetheless, I think his resignation was about as voluntary as Richard Nixon’s. My sense is that he was legally and morally complicit in the cover-up and the Conclave of Cardinals mandated that he turn in his Pradas for the sake of restoring some level of credibility to The Holy See. Like so many of the horrified and petrified old guard…whether it be Pateno or Mahoney, they just wanted this horrid, sordid homosexual stuff to disappear. His facility for repression and denial were his worst demons and ultimately swallowed him alive. You might remember that Ratzinger was subjected to indoctrination in Hitler’s Youth Kampfs.

Natal Pallas sextile his Neptune in Leo forms a yod with his Sun at 25 Aries. From November, 2011, through August, 2012, transiting Saturn opposed his Sun 3 times.
At the same time trans. Mars was conjunct trans. Saturn during August 2012, there was a New Moon conjunct his Leo Neptune. Would he continue to struggle with a decision or would he listen to his spiritual guidance (natal Sun trine natal Neptune)(transiting Saturn opposite natal Sun and sextile natal Neptune)?
Way back in June 2011, trans. Jupiter was conjunct his natal Chiron and he was having a natal Uranus return then too. There was no escape for the Pope, it was time to become conscious and aware. This was when he must have started weighing his options (Saturn in Libra).
In April, 2012, there was a New Moon conjunct his Chiron (wounding, healing) that coincided with retrograde Saturn’s 2nd opposition to the Pope’s Sun. The transiting north node had just passed over his 6+ Sagittarian Saturn. Maybe all this doesn’t qualify as an epiphany but, considering his age at the time, it was an erosion of his resistance to the pressures coming at him from the outside world and probably his inside world too.
By July, 2012 when the Sun (12+ Cancer) was conjunct his Pluto (13+ Cancer) and opposite a full Moon in Capricorn, it was only 4 degrees from trans. Pluto (8+ Cap). Pluto was square Uranus (8+ Aries), and, if the time is correct in the birthchart for him, the Pope’s Moon (14+ Libra) was also square the Full Moon last July. It was too much pressure and it has been a gradual undoing of his personal “structure” (Saturn), just as Pluto has ground away at the structures of societies (Capricorn) since 2008. Denial was no longer an option for the Pope.
I believe the August 2012 New Moon conjunct his Neptune and trine his Sun, combined with transiting Saturn and Mars in Libra opposite his Sun, was a back-to-the-wall point for the Pope. Whether that was at the insistance of the Conclave of the Cardinals (Libra Mars-Saturn), or his own inner guidance (New Moon conjunct natal Neptune) or, most likely, a combination of the two, the Capricorn Solstice (12/21/12) with Venus conjunct the Pope’s Saturn marked the end of resistance and the final solution for the Catholic Church’s dilema.
In the Capricorn Solstice, Mercury (communication) is at 14+ Sagittarius (religion) and trines the Moon (the people) at 14+ Aries (new beginnings). Mars (force) in the Catholic Church chart (6/7/29)is at 14+ Leo (display), and when combined with the Moon and Mercury in the Solstice chart, forms an impenetrable Grand Trine in Fire (inspiration). With the help of Uranus (unexpected) in the Solstice chart (4+ Aries) combining with Pallas-Athene (strategy)in the Church’s chart (5+ Aries) a disaster has been averted.
Regarding the Pope and the Church, this AM’s Wash Post did a big article about those papers that were leaked and how much corruption they exposed. I think Chris Matthews will go nuts over this!

Reading that Washington Post articles I feel like I am in the theater of the absurd or a Don Brown novel. Not sure which. I don’t think it’s what the son of a carpenter in Nazareth had in mind, however.
