The dark shadow of sequestration looms over the land. This harebrained scheme arose to quell Republican extortion threats when the debt ceiling needed to be raised. “We will throw you into a depression if you don’t give us what we want” was the essential message from the lunatics who now have a strangle-hold over our government. And what the most extreme of that crowd wants is to largely dismantle the government so they don’t have to contribute to anything other than themselves and they can do what they want without government regulation of any kind. Forget collective effort for the greater good. Just appease the fruitcakes on the fringe who vote in the primaries.
I, for one, am really tired of this tyranny of a demented minority who has so rigged the system – through gerrymandering in the House and the use of the filibuster in the Senate – that they control the action. They are like a crazy old aunt who demands we marshal all the house’s resources to quell the little green men on the roof, while what we really need is figure out how to pay the mortgage and the electric bill. It is time for sanity to make a comeback.
Deciphering the astrological indications regarding the sequester is not a simple matter. What seems most likely to be involved in the ongoing paralysis is the transit of Saturn moving back to an exact conjunction with Inaugural Saturn (10Scorpio48), most pressing from February 18 through March 20. This implies some movement forward in the administration’s goals will not be possible until after March 20. Mercury’s turn from retrograde to direct also points to renewed progress around this time.
The transit of Jupiter to the US Uranus (8Gemini55), triggering the volatile and
transformative progressed US Sun square to natal Uranus, runs from March 2 through March 11, and begins just as the sequester goes into effect. This configuration will stir up some kind of upheaval in the country, although the source for it is not yet clear. Strikes, protests, disruptions, and sudden, upsetting, and potentially explosive events are all possible. There will be some new spark of awareness that inspires an effort to break free of restrictive or dysfunctional situations. A nation-wide strike against the willful stupidity and recalcitrance of Congress would be my preference, but anything is possible. What seems most likely from the vantage point of today would be a loud and raucous movement to either resolve the sequester or to push through gun regulation of some kind.
There is also still some hope that the draconian budget cuts will not go through as planned on March 1. The Venus/Neptune conjunction on February 27 and early February 28 will trine US Venus (3Cancer06) and square Obama’s Moon (3Gemini21). There is also little to support the consternation I would expect to find in numerous administration and other charts around this time were the sequester to happen, indicating some delay or modified resolution may be imminent.
As I have written previously, beginning around March 20, there will be a period of extreme volatility, bringing potentially stressful circumstances to the US at least through May. It seems very unlikely these will have anything to do with the sequester and will have far more to do with disruptive, painful, and potentially violent circumstances that demand action of some kind. In late March, Mars, the warrior planet, will move to conjunct Uranus and then square Pluto, followed by a long Mars/Sun conjunction in early April, and further followed by another round of the Uranus/Pluto square in May. These dangerous aspects are accompanied by enough Saturn transits in the US and Obama charts in April and May to suggest significant difficulties as a result of several unstable and urgent situations. Today’s hyperventilating over the sequester will be long forgotten as these new storms appear on the horizon.

Like the chronic pain and disease generated by a deep abscess, this maniacal lunatic fringe continues to create economic disease and paralysis and is visiting great pain upon the populace with its toxic and enfeebled policies. Have walked every day and still not seen the deer again. Tomorrow’s my last day. I’m thinking about actually getting up before the sun so I can be on the beach at sunrise in hopes of seeing the deer again. It was too special a thing not to really, rally want to see it again, and I’d love to have photos or a short video from my phone.
I did learn there’s a nature preserve that includes beachfront property. That’s where the deer live. And from a couple of people I met on the beach who live here that they’ve seen the deer very few times themselves, so I feel really lucky.

JH: Les, I want to get your reaction to a fit of pique from John Paulson, who heads the Paulson & Co. hedge fund. When Occupy Wall Street was in the public eye, he issued a press release. Let me quote it:
The top 1% of New Yorkers pay over 40% of all income taxes, providing huge benefits to everyone in our city and state. Paulson & Co. and its employees have paid hundreds of millions of dollars in New York City and New York State taxes in recent years and have created over 100 high-paying jobs in New York City since its formation.
New York currently has the highest income taxes of any state in the country and thousands of businesses have fled New York to states with no income taxes such as Florida, Texas and Nevada, or moved offshore.
Instead of vilifying our most successful businesses, we should be supporting them and encouraging them to remain in New York City and continue to grow.

LL: Josh, are you trying to raise my blood pressure? I could write another book about how out-to-lunch Paulson’s comments really are. First off, Paulson himself is not suffering. He took in $4.9 billion in 2010 — that comes out to about $2.4 million an hour. And with all that profit he created only 100 jobs? That’s a disgrace.
Second, hedge funds like his take advantage of an incredible income tax loophole called “carried interest.” At the time of his rant, Paulson was probably using a federal tax provision that limited most of his income to a 15 percent tax rather than the top rate of 35 percent. His overall tax rate was probably less than his chauffeur’s. And note how he neglects to mention payroll and sales taxes that the average New Yorker pays in a higher proportion than he does. And, he fails to note that whatever he pays in New York state and local taxes is deducted from his federal taxes.
As for businesses fleeing, Paulson seems to be blissfully unaware that study after study shows how marginal tax rates have little or no impact on where businesses and individuals locate. And he’ll need to explain why Wall Street’s casinos haven’t already fled the higher taxes in New York for low-tax Las Vegas. Maybe it’s because the casinos in Nevada are more regulated than those on Wall Street?

Dionne wrote in a recent editorial that part of the Republican strategy is the stall. Since they were unable to defeat Obama, they will defeat any policy he attempts to enact during this term. This seems the most logical for each of their districts will be impacted by the sequester, and in particular the military which seems ubiquitous to every single state in this nation (intentionally).
Will’s statement is also astute about a boil. While I abhor unnecessary loss of life via storms, Sandy Hooks, or acts of war, I can’t help but feel the coming lance, a pierce to release the fetid puss of what this supposed governing body has become.

I wish I didn’t think this but I do and recently I read a quote of Rachel laying out the facts of 9/11 and her vision of things just matched mine so these days I am listening to my own mind/heart. Lorrie, I don’t think films that glorify war are that popular any more, at least I can’t think of any…Angelina Jolie did a great & sensitive anti-war film called “In the Land of Blood and Honey” about the Serb-Bosnian war. although films that glorify violence obviously are popular….people like drama, thrills and sensationalism—I think that’s why I read and watch a lot of mysteries (and close my eyes when it comes to violence; I did that during “Life of Pi” although I don’t think much violence actually materialized, it was more of a threat), I also think that most of the films up for awards had very positive social messages (not least of which was “Beasts of the Southern Wild” filmed in my area of the world–”The Bathtub”). When I chose film as my graduate major over a helping profession like social work many years ago, I actually thought I would go into the industry and make films that raised social conscience or told a great human story, like many do. I had a lot of angst about exactly what you speak of—the obscene amounts of money that are spent and, possibly wasted. Then, I thought about the spiritual satisfactions of film collaboration, the kinds of high-quality character traits and artistic ability that it brings out both in the creators and the audience, the fact that it employs many people, and usually adds to the economy of the location where its filmed. So, yes, the Oscars are glitzy and sometimes ditzy (much of the gowns & jewelry are on loan, I think, not necessarily purchased?) but what other medium can entertain and educate/elucify so many people at one time? (People who are brought close together in a dark space with soothing light sources and effects…during ancient times the tribal story teller played that role.) During the Great Depression, film was just about the only art that brought joy and distraction to joyless lives. So…in many ways…Hooray for Hollywood…although there definitely also is a lot of BS and fakery going on. Thank God for those filmmakers of depth, and I try not to judge the others because many times when you think people are “shallow,” they surprise you. I do see your point though about the opulence on display in contrast to those who are suffering (and, paradoxically, many people in the entertainment industry do great things for social causes, as should be done by the “haves”).

Not to belabor the point, but show-business is always going to be glitzy and glamorous by its very nature. I don’t know if I’ve seen so many Hollywood movies exalting war – at least not in my generation. It anything, Hollywood shows the awful and horrific side. Schindler’s List, Life is Beautiful, The Pianist, Sophie’s Choice, The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, Defiance, M.A.S.H., The Hurt Locker, Birth of a Nation, Full Metal Jacket, The Thin Red Line, An Officer and a Gentlemen, A Few Good Men – these were powerful commentaries on the dark and regrettable sides of war, the military, and fascism.
I thought Hollywood having the First Lady present the award last night was a potent progressive thumbing-of-the-nose to the Repugs. And it is a reminder of the immense gift of creativity, the arts and the imagination that is so very essential to a healthy America.

The part of the Sociopath video narrated by Peter Coyote that Alex submitted about sociopathy and its relationship to Wall Street, the Banking Industry and the heads of industry is certainly holds water in this respect; sociopaths are more motivated by money than anything else; then control and manipulation of others in order to exploit, cheat, chisel, deceive, gerrymander and violate the rights, privileges and property of others. These have been their characteristics of the bad guys throughout history – we have known the “type” from biblical days – hardly any ground-breaking revelation. But where this glossy presentation by a very well-liked celebrity really begins to lose credibility for me is when it suggests that SSRI medications like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft or anxiolytics like valium or lorazapam were very likely causative factors in the 2008 Financial Meltdown and the subsequent Great Recession.
Fact: The Great Depression took place in 1929 and lasted for the better part of ten years. Valium and lorazapam – the anxioytics, were not even available in the United States for almost 40 yeas later – 1965 and 1967, respectively. And Prozac, the SSRIs and all of their subsequent permutations (Paxil, Zoloft, etc.) did not even begin to become available to prescribe until almost 60 years later…1986.
Additionally, we had a major recession take place in 1983
1983 and a major market crash on “Black Monday” in October 1987.
Moreover, because sociopaths by definition do not have the capacity for empathy or respect the rights and privileges of others, they do not fall pray to the levels of depression and anxiety that normal, caring, attentive and empathic people do, as a rule. In fact, they have a rather reptilian survival schemata – primitive, self-serving and cold. Ergo, they don’t need to take these medicines. So to intimate that somehow the pervasive use of SSRIs and anxiolytic drugs were a causative link toward a massive wave of sociopathic disinihibition and behavior in the workplace and en masse insensitivity to one another that ushered in the 2008 meltdown is quite a fantastic extrapolation of pure speculation, at very best.

FYI: here is a method to begin examining your natal chart
make a list of dates of objective events in your life:
partial list of examples:
birth of siblings
your graduations
significant career changes, beginnings or endings, promotions
date of big purchase, car or house
big vacations as child or adult
death of grandparents
marriage, divorce, second marriage
date of city to city move or state to state move
marriage of adult children
birth of grandchildren
any outstanding objective events with date; pick five out of that list to start with;
check the outer planet transits for those dates and note any emphasized aspect among the outer planets;
review your natal chart compared to those same planets; at this point you are ready to track planet patterns that you are sensitive to:
a) what transit planet(s) appear/or repeat/progress in your objective events date list that seems significant to you;
b) what is the NATAL aspect of those planets in your birth chart
hypothetical example from objective events:
perhaps the emphasized transit of outer planets includes jupiter opposite pluto; then review your natal chart and note the natal aspect between jupiter and pluto – track the jupiter-pluto opposition from your birthdate through your objective events list for aspect progression:
you should be able to identify several planets that make sensitive contact to your natal chart from the list of your objective event dates;
you can begin to interpret your chart because the subjective nature of your chart, which is so personal to you, has been sorted out; if it is difficult to be an objective observer and understand your own natal chart ( most people find it difficult to be objective observer about themselves) then use this METHOD to begin to analyze your natal chart;
this will create an effective analysis tool for your personal interpretation kit:

barbk – Well, now I know how that New Moon exactly conj. my natal Moon in 10th hs. yesterday affected me. Also had transiting Mars in 4th exactly opp. 10th hs. Sun. Last night, I was so irrationally angry with the govt., with my country, with the leaders, with the lack of empathy of so many who take so much for granted. I just did not want to be here any longer, I’m so fed up with dealing with it all. (Of course, it didn’t help that I’m exhausted after a week of having the flu!) I’m more settled today, but still sick of the childish game-playing while real-life dramas are happening to people every day.

I found the Argo article pretty emotionally-charged and slanted to fit its author’s subjective, somewhat-hysterical views. The film made a valid attempt to show the history of what happened during the 1979 political revolution, an effort that was hijacked by the Islamic revolution. It also told the story of a brave CIA agent (yes, they are people too! Imagine that!) who saved the lives of some Americans. It had zero to do with Israel. Its 3 producers are not even Jewish. Why were the revolutionaries depicted as they were? Because this is what happens to revolutions all over the world. A downtrodden, repressed, frightened populace finally rises up against a dictatorial government, mob rule begins to take over, and they become purists and fanatics, often just as bad as those they overthrow, e.g. Cuba, China, Russia, France, possibly the countries involved in the Arab Spring. Coincidentally & serendipitously, I am reading “Persepolis,” by Marjane Satrapi, one of the most delightful books I have EVER read; it’s a graphic novel that was also made into a film, a kind of Iranian “Little Prince.” It should be required reading in schools as it would go a long way towards seeing how normal, beautiful and wonderful the Iranian people are (“Reading Lolita in Tehran” is another good example, as is the film, “The Separation,” which I did not see but heard it was highly praised). It is the religious fanatics who have taken over, who forbid people from enjoying life, who are anti-human rights (stone, punish, execute those who are political opponents or not strict enough Muslims), pro-martyrdom, arm extremists against Israel rather than promote peace, and want to wipe Israel off the map, that we need to worry about. No one wants to go to war with Iran, not even Israel, but no one wants to see the extremist Iranian government have a nuclear bomb, not even its neighbors. Iran with a bomb will become worse than North Korea, I fear.

I second your take on the Argo-hating/Israel hating rant. It was, hands-down, one of the more bizarre, paranoid and delusional perspectives I’ve seen. But hey, Affleck et al won the Academny-f—ing Award for what I believe was a brilliant screenplay and film. It was harrowing ordeal and a heroic feat by our military operatives and Hollywood all without shedding a drop of blood or dropping one bomb. Hooray for Hollywood!
But, you know, Will…I was very disappointed that Lincoln didn’t win, and that Tommy Lee Jones also lost. I know there are lots of reasons why the “Academy” votes the way it does, but one of them doesn’t always seem to be admiration for superlative craftsmanship in filmmaking. In my mind, Argo was a very good film; Lincoln was a much better one, even though it was a little conventional and old-fashioned.
I’m sorry for your Lincoln loss. I think there was kind of a karmic thing that happened with the Hollywood insiders – Spielberg being the big dog. I think the Academy members felt/knew that Affleck got unduly snubbed out of the best director category. So they did what good little rebels do; they voted for his film to get around that insult and give him the ultimate award – Best Film.
Although I did not watch all of Lincoln, I had a bit of a problem with its pacing. There were moments when I kind of lost interest and found my mind drifting. But the look and feel and frames of the film were superb, as was the acting.
You can’t win ‘em all, Sharon. But Lincoln will live on for many years to come, with many awards and salutations.

Please understand, I have no stake in Argo or special feelings for Affleck. But the assertions made in that article were deeply maligned and toxic – and your having editorialized it by adding inflammatory punctuation seemed anything but unbiased. It came off as a rather rabid, vicious attack.

You had mentioned that Saturn was approaching your ascendant and I’ve found some interesting things in the Ingress chart for when Saturn moved into Scorpio. First and foremost, Saturn was in a grand water trine with Neptune in Pisces and Ceres in Cancer. To me this translates into an affinity with emotion (water) not normally associated with Saturn. Saturn was also conjunct Mercury, both at 0 Scorpio, so Saturn has a vehicle to express those easily accessed feelings.
Not that a Full Moon conjunct your natal Moon wouldn’t cause an emotional venting all by itself. Nor should having transiting Mars opposite your Sun causing a passionate outburst of feeling be so surprising. Having the flu always weakens your resistance, including the control of your feelings.
If we take the meaning of Saturn in Scorpio to symbolize our government and its leaders, and Neptune in Pisces to symbolize compassion and empathy, and Ceres in Cancer to symbolize family, feelings and loss, then maybe this 2 to 3 year stint of Saturn in Scorpio is going to construct something more considerate of feeling and not so dependent on talk. Talk has gotten us little or nothing. . so far.
When trans. Uranus made it’s last entry into Aries 2 years ago Saturn was part of a grand trine in air signs, Venus in Aquarius, Moon in Gemini and Saturn in Libra. For 2 years talk has been cheap and easy to come by. Saturn was conjunct the U.S. natal Saturn (government) too. Maybe the shift of transiting Saturn to Scorpio signals a change of direction insofar as it relates to (trans) Uranus’ game plan. Maybe you are the “canary in the coal mine” Lorrie!
Maybe the U.S. public is just as worn out and “fed up with dealing with it all” as you.
Another thing about Saturn’s Ingress chart (10/5/12) is that the Moon (feelings), Jupiter (excess), and Chaos (chaos) are all at 16 Gemini. They are opposite centaur Pholus (primative behavior, start something small that leads to something big) at 16 Sagittarius. It could also be meaningful that Moon-Jupiter-Chaos are only 1 degree away from where Venus made her rare transit to the Sun last year (15 Gemini). Might not it be saying: Love conquers all, just give it some time (Saturn!)?

Starlight, interesting info about the March volatility. There is currently a movement (there are two actually, but only one is dated in March) that is planning an attack on Washington, D.C. March 22-23rd (both dates are used). The other is an insurrection where they are planning to do citizens arrests and removal of office of Obama, Biden and all Congress (they have also mentioned SCOTUS justices). These groups are recruiting on Facebook and although the pages have been reported, Facebook is not removing the content. The May 14th Citizens Arrests has an invite list of over 35,000 people and they have already gained over 1,000 who say they are attending, since just a couple/few days ago. There are reports that Secret Service and Police are paying visits to those who are joining the movement.
They are talking about kicking out all federal officeholders. They sound serious (can’t say how much of it is fake bravado) and they sound like they will be armed if they pull this off.
Will, as someone who has an M.A. in film and spent time studying it, I felt “Lincoln” was under-appreciated and under-rated…I guess it just wasn’t Lincoln’s year astrologically…and, Angellight, as someone who is now working towards an M.A. in Social Work (and loving my courses, particularly the Diversity and Oppression class which today was dedicated to the appreciation of the Persian and Arab culture; I looked them up and reported what I had found out to the class), I find it strange that you don’t recognize the prejudice and wild accusations in the article you posted…even though the author’s intent, of appreciating the Iranian people, shows his heart is in the right place in that respect. Lorrie, the info you posted about the U.S. and Britain replacing the democratically-elected leader of Iran with the Shah is pretty common knowledge and makes Iran’s anger at the West understandable, but it is not responsible for the Iranian revolution being hijacked by fundamentalists (as is now a danger in Egypt and Syria). Lorrie, I empathize with your frustrations and disappointments regarding animal rescue and care. I donate and spread the word but don’t know that I could face the situation as regularly as you do. People need to neuter their pets and adopt from shelters in order to give homeless animals loving homes, instead of buying pets. I do see lots of success stories, though, and I want to remind you of the (approximately) 125 cats your shelter placed 2 weeks ago!
One last comment. My professor is Iranian and the film we saw today makes it very clear that a good many Iranians (I don’t know how many–half? more than half?) are extremely unhappy with the direction their government has taken and also feel their vote is worthless and that Ahmadinejad was not really re-elected…the results were falsified.

Another point, just because one posts an article does not necessarily imply consent with the content but informational in that another perspective exists which we should perhaps be aware. I appreciate and admire the effort and dedication you have put into this (and all of your research), although I would not be drawn to this subject matter myself. I am hard-pressed to accept that Venus aspects described in a birthchart, no matter how negatively expressed, would be the major factor in determining any individual’s (such as your examples) extraordinary lack of feeling or remorse in their endeavors. A contributor yes, but much more revealing I suspect would be the placements of their natal Pluto, Uranus, Mercury as well as a natal Mars ( esp. conjunct Algol!).
The planets you have listed could be in the same degrees as some of the people who read this column but who in no way resemble the twisted doctors mentioned in your comment. I certainly don’t deny how fascinating it can be to find commonalities between charts and thrive on these discoveries myself. Still, in order to draw conclusions for the explanation of one’s behavior and attitudes, the whole birth chart needs to be considered. Not that you did draw any conclusion, but someone reading the info you provided just might. For most people, Venus works in favor of relationships with others and all other life forms. Just as you said, it could also reflect negatively in extreme cases of a politial or idealogical nature, and I thank you so much for calling it to our attention.
The rare Venus occult Sun (Venus transit Sun) aspect of June 2012 is a signal that positive transformation in humanity’s values and it’s ability to express love is now ready to take place. Clearing out negative expressions of Venus lodged in our combined unconsciousness (past and present) can begin when we become conscious of them. As your work with homeless animals is such a good example of positive Venus, you should take heart that she will make a triple conjunction with the Sun and Uranus next month. This comes the day after the Libra Full Moon that opposes a stellium of planets in Aries; Venus, Sun, Uranus and Mars, ranging from 6 through 11 degrees. This stellium provides a sextile to Jupiter, a square to Pluto and a quincunx to Saturn in addition to being opposite the Moon.
The combined energy of the Aries stellium, Jupiter in Gemini and Saturn in Scorpio provides a yod with Saturn at the apex. When this pattern is combined with a second yod of Pluto in Capricorn sextile Saturn as both quincunx Jupiter at the apex, the two planets that represent the world’s societies, Jupiter and Saturn, become agents for change. Hopefully, the conjunction of the Sun-Venus-Uranus at 8 Aries will provide a breakthrough and positive news later in December when Uranus stations direct at this same degree; the same day as the Full Moon in Gemini. Marijuana is illegal even though there are no known cases of death by marijuana unlike pharmaceuticals that kill an estimated 100,000 people per year. But, forget this. You have likely caused your own illness. Being human doesn’t matter. If you want health care you must pay for it. If you can’t pay for it, you’re likely to die. Or if can pay some of it, but not all, you’ll be bankrupted. So, you might as well die. You do not deserve free health care.
Social security is an entitlement. You were not smart enough to save for your needs. Corporations are far smarter. They know how to make money. It’s easy. Reward COs and CEOs with multi-million dollar contracts in order to cut corners, wages, and pensions.
Oh, and don’t forget. You do not need to vote. Corporations buy candidates, craft the law, and the supreme court upholds it.

Today Venus was conjunct Neptune and they are in a septile to Pluto. Septiles are 1/7th of a circle and 7 is Saturn’s number.
Do you remember an article by Robert Wilkinson on septiles where he said that they are “critical forks in the road of destiny”? He says they signal a time where we must choose which way we will define our personality, and threfore our future. Scalia is one strange little unit. I can almost see him as a nerdy, pint-sized little Italian-American boy – one who was very obedient, the apple of his mommy’s and daddy’s eye. He probably had an impeccable conduct record, high grades and was perfectly groomed, at all times. Its likely he had a few back-up pencils and pens, erasers, pads of paper, etc. He was/is the ultimate conformist. And it fits perfectly into his “strict constructionist” approach to Constitutional law. As a kid, he probably couldn’t stand to ever color outside of the lines; and if he did, he had a complete meltdown. I don’t think he is capable of embracing the Constitution as a living, breathing, needs-to-be-adjusted body of principals and guidelines. Even though he is very smart, he’s not bright – he’s not enlightened. Unfortunately, he is very persuasive and charismatic and reigns over a group of similarly uptight, frightened ultra-comformists in SCOTUS. Tough to accept.
And I concur, there is something terribly wrong with him.

The debt ceiling will be raised and the sequester will be at the least, modified. The money men made it clear last debt ceiling scare this was not to happen again. Yes I know this to be true. This is not speculation. Everything else is posturing. As far violent and unexpected events, is that not the forecast every month? I had no way of knowing to what degree you read the article or noticed what I noticed, Angellight, but I was surprised that neither you nor anyone else, except Will, commented on the inherent bigotry in the article. I’m just going to come out and say that, as a Jew and a human being, I find any reference to Jews controlling Hollywood or controlling banking or the federal reserve offensive and prejudiced, and the author of the article wrote in those terms. The fact that others have not acknowledged this is disappointing. Insofar as depicting the Iranian people negatively, those that take it that way are already (and sadly) Islamophobic and do not know about history. But many people do understand that the Iranian revolution took the country in a very repressive direction that caused many people to leave. Many of those who remain do not support the current government any more than they supported the Shah. In fact, many think that Ahmadinejad is now in power illegally. The professor of my Human Diversity and Oppression course said her Iranian mother says it is a waste of time to vote in Iran as it doesn’t count anymore. I did a little research and, although there were historical inaccuracies in the events of the rescue of the Americans in Argo, the fact that 52 Americans were held hostage of Iranian revolutionaries for 444 days cannot be denied and the movie depicts the activities of the revolutionaries in 1979. Whether they were justified in overthrowing the shah or not, or angry that the U.S. & Britain for removing their democratically-elected leader (who wanted to nationalize their oil industry) and putting in the shah, did this justify taking American hostages? This is what was depicted in the film which also, if I remember correctly, prefaces the story with the facts about what the U.S. and Britain did.

Regarding possible earthquakes in the near future; I suspect the massive shifting of the Pacific tectonic plates purportedly to occur on or around March 13th will catch everyone unaware. It will in turn have a direct effect on investors and the economy as a whole. The sequester ‘posturing’ can only complicate matters and add to the panic selling that is to follow. I think mid March could be a turning point for all concerned.

The Sequester and the Tea Party Plot…by unknown internet…
Imagine a plot to undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population.
Imagine further that the plotters infiltrate Congress and state governments, reshape their districts to give them disproportionate influence in Washington, and use the media to spread big lies about the government.
Finally, imagine they not only paralyze the government but are on the verge of dismantling pieces of it.
Far-fetched? Perhaps. But take a look at what’s been happening in Washington and many state capitals since Tea Party fanatics gained effective control of the Republican Party, and you’d be forgiven if you see parallels.
Tea Party Republicans are crowing about the “sequestration” cuts beginning today (Friday). “This will be the first significant tea party victory in that we got what we set out to do in changing Washington,” says Rep. Tim Huelskamp (Kan.), a Tea Partier who was first elected in 2010.
Sequestration is only the start. What they set out to do was not simply change Washington but eviscerate the U.S. government — “drown it in the bathtub,” in the words of their guru Grover Norquist – slashing Social Security and Medicare, ending worker protections we’ve had since the 1930s, eroding civil rights and voting rights, terminating programs that have helped the poor for generations, and making it impossible for the government to invest in our future.
Sequestration grew out of a strategy hatched soon after they took over the House in 2011, to achieve their goals by holding hostage the full faith and credit of the United States – notwithstanding the Constitution’s instruction that the public debt of the United States “not be questioned.”
To avoid default on the public debt, the White House and House Republicans agreed to harsh and arbitrary “sequestered” spending cuts if they couldn’t come up with a more reasonable deal in the interim. But the Tea Partiers had no intention of agreeing to anything more reasonable. They knew the only way to dismember the federal government was through large spending cuts without tax increases.
Nor do they seem to mind the higher unemployment their strategy will almost certainly bring about. Sequestration combined with January’s fiscal cliff deal is expected to slow economic growth by 1.5 percentage points this year – dangerous for an economy now crawling at about 2 percent. It will be even worse if the Tea Partiers refuse to extend the government’s spending authority, which expires March 27.
A conspiracy theorist might think they welcome more joblessness because they want Americans to be even more fearful and angry. Tea Partiers use fear and anger in their war against the government – blaming the anemic recovery on government deficits and the government’s size, and selling a poisonous snake-oil of austerity economics and trickle-down economics as the remedy.
They likewise use the disruption and paralysis they’ve sown in Washington to persuade Americans government is necessarily dysfunctional, and politics inherently bad. Their continuing showdowns and standoffs are, in this sense, part of the plot.
What is the President’s response? He still wants a so-called “grand bargain” of “balanced” spending cuts (including cuts in the projected growth of Social Security and Medicare) combined with tax increases on the wealthy. So far, though, he has agreed to a gross imbalance — $1.5 trillion in cuts to Republicans’ $600 billion in tax increases on the rich.
The President apparently believes Republicans are serious about deficit reduction, when in fact the Tea Partiers now running the GOP are serious only about dismembering the government.
And he seems to accept that the budget deficit is the largest economic problem facing the nation, when in reality the largest problem is continuing high unemployment (some 20 million Americans unemployed or under-employed), declining real wages, and widening inequality. Deficit reduction now or in the near-term will only make these worse.
Besides, the deficit is now down to about 5 percent of GDP – where it was when Bill Clinton took office. It is projected to mushroom in later years mainly because healthcare costs are expected to rise faster than the economy is expected to grow, and the American population is aging. These trends have little or nothing to do with government programs. In fact, Medicare is far more efficient than private health insurance.
I suggest the President forget about a “grand bargain.” In fact, he should stop talking about the budget deficit and start talking about jobs and wages, and widening inequality – as he did in the campaign. And he should give up all hope of making a deal with the Tea Partiers who now run the Republican Party.
Instead, the President should let the public see the Tea Partiers for who they are — a small, radical minority intent on dismantling the government of the United States. As long as they are allowed to dictate the terms of public debate they will continue to hold the rest of us hostage to their extremism.

Using the chart I have for the Republican party (courtesy of my friend JohnTWB), I think the Republican party will lose congressional seats in both the 2014 and 2016 elections.
The obstructionist tactics of the 80th (Do Nothing) congress cost the Republican party the biggest upset (in punditry) in American presidential election history and control of Congress (except for 2 short spurts) for decades as the pundits saw things one way while average Americans lived them and voted another. This embarrassing disconnect changed polling methodology from that time on. After the 1948 elections the Republican party only held the majority in both houses from Jan 1953 through Jan 1955 and then not again until Jan 1995.
80th “Do Nothing” Congress
The 80th Congress met in Washington, DC from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1949, during the third and fourth years of Harry S. Truman’s presidency. The Republican party held the majority in both houses of Congress.

If you count that Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone is now cardinal chamberlain in charge of Rome, and he was born in Romano Italy, then there’s the possibility that something occurs that interrupts the election of a new Pope.

Alex, my comment is addressing your post on those who are hungry. I have posted about a Project I began in May, 2012, several of my internet sisters have donated to help feed many on the street here in San Francisco. Which I am truly thankful, though the people are homeless they are more devastated by the lack of food everyday. Thursday evening after passing out all I had for the day, a friend and I were talking and we both noticed as many who were clean and fed proportionally there were those not in one block.
People can barely help us with donations because of their own economic woes. Sadly we are running out of funding and will only be able to keep this going for two more weeks.
What is the answer, do we start stepping over dead bodies?? Our government cannot help themselves let alone us??? Prayer is all I will have left. Blessings All (wennyeedwards@comcast.net)

Alex, I truly needed your response. Just got home from errands and read your post…thank you! While out several people asked me if I had sandwiches today. I only give out the food during the week days, hoping people who are out celebrating their weekend are generous giving me a chance to catch my breath. I have come across women with a child occasionally during the day. Another reason food programs in school is so needed.

Thanks for helping to clarify the enigmatic St. Malachy Prophecy of the Popes predictions. I had been wondering about it since the announcement was made of the Pope’s resignation last month.
A little known book published by Ray Stanford in 1971 called the Fatima Prophecy has a unique perspective on the yet to be revealed third message (based on channeled messages). One particular excerpt seems to resonate with what you just shared. . . . .
