As the world looks on, Syrians are continuing to defy their ruthless president and demand his ouster. The anti-government uprising began in early 2011, along with other manifestations of the Arab Spring, but the clash with government forces has dramatically escalated in the past month, including vicious attacks on protesters with casualties mounting into the thousands. A growing outcry has been building from nations across the globe, including the Arab League, who is sending in observers with hopes of quelling some of the violence. Fears of a Syrian civil war abound.
With humanity once again moving into a Mars retrograde period, we have cause for concern. These several-month periods that come every two years, during which Mars moves very slowly back and forth across a section of the zodiac, often bring with them an increase in conflict and military engagement in numerous countries. The current Mars transit will station at 23Virgo05 in late January 2012 before turning retrograde and stationing again in April 2012 at 3Virgo40. The chart of Syrian President Bashir Assad is greatly agitated by this strengthening Mars activity due to his numerous planets in Virgo and Pisces and the progressions that are activating them.
Born during the Uranus/Pluto conjunction of 1965, with it playing very 
prominently in his natal chart conjunct the Sun and opposite both the Moon and Saturn, Assad carries within him the profound intensity, obsessive desire for power, rebellious spirit, and strong will of that historical aspect. Currently, his progressed Uranus (18Virgo05) and progressed Pluto (17Virgo41) have moved into a several-year, one-degree-orb conjunction with the natal Sun (18Virgo24), while progressed Mars (17Sagittarius) is presently square progressed Pluto from September 2011 through February 2013, and soon to be in square with progressed Uranus from April 2012 through August 2013, and, finally, in square with the natal Sun, from September 2012 through March 2014. This suggests significant brutality, aggression, and a fierce hold on power from late 2011 through at least early 2014.
In addition, the three crossings of Mars in late 2011 and the first half of 2012 over these configurations are guaranteed to bring into full flower Assad’s latent ruthlessness and willingness to use all force available to squash any opposition. We have just witnessed the first crossing, roughly from December 12th to December 25th, during which the recent savagery probably reached its zenith with Syrian government forces using heavy weapons and tanks against unarmed protesters. The next crossing of Mars over these fateful degrees will come during the second half of February 2012, although the Mars station at 23 Virgo is close enough to keep the pot simmering through January and early February. The final crossing will come from May 31 through June 9, 2012.
Unfortunately, we do not have a birth time for Assad which would help to pinpoint the exact timing of another very significant set of aspects. Assad’s progressed Moon will be conjunct progressed Mars and square progressed Pluto, progressed Uranus, and natal Sun, successively, over a four-month period. This is likely to occur from March through June 2012, plus or minus up to six months. It is certainly possible that we are now in the midst of this four-month period, which will be another huge activation of the very volatile, aggressive, and unrelenting progressed Uranus/progressed Pluto/natal Sun square to progressed Mars.
Due to the fact that there is more than one suggested chart for Syrian independence, using any of them with any certainty is impossible. But we do have the always-accurate Spring Equinox chart of 2011, drawn for Damascus, 
which offers significant indication of the current power struggle between Assad and his rebellious and oppressed citizens. This chart became active on March 21, 2011, and continues to be potent until the next Spring Equinox in 2012. In it, Pluto (7Capricorn24) sits within 22 minutes of the Ascendant (7Capricorn46), hovering very close to that sensitive point from late March through mid-May 2011 and moving to cross it in December 2011 through mid-January 2012. The Pluto/Ascendant conjunction in this chart describes a fierce power struggle throughout the year, with it being most intense during the times when Pluto is closest to the Ascendant by transit, exactly what we have seen in Syria. We are now in the final ferocious period through mid-January 2012.
Thus, Assad’s chart shows the likelihood of a ferocious aggressiveness through early 2014, not excluding military action (Mars) in some form, to continue his oppression of the Syrian population or possibly as a way of uniting the people behind him against an external foe. This trend is particularly potent between September 2011 and June 2012 due to the Mars retrograde period and Assad’s progressed Moon. Despite some minimal containment of him by the international community due to transiting Saturn sesquiquadrate his Saturn from December 20, 2011, through March 14, 2012, and conjunct his Venus in early December 2011, late March through April 3, 2012, and again in early September 2012, the long-term indications are that he will maintain a tight and brutal hold on his people for at least the next few years.

Things are escalating in the Strait of Hormuz between the US and Iran. This is happening just as Uranus moves back to a one degree orb with Obama’s Venus (1Cancer47) AND is moving to oppose the US Spring Equinox Ascendant (1Libra18) and square the US Spring MC (1Cancer29), both of the latter building again since 12/10. There will be a Moon/Uranus conjunction early Saturday (12/31) morning EST. Could bring an incident. If I am right and it is these aspects that are indicative of the increasing confrontation, I would expect tension through late January. The good news is that Obama has a good deal of Jupiter right now so things should go reasonably well for him (and therefore us) in this.

This historic aspect could be used in such life-affirming ways, but Assad is visciously wielding this power — and for another few years? It hurt my heart for those who know very well that they are putting their lives on the line to counter him.

Jerry – I would be far more concerned if Uranus were at 00 or 1 degree in that chart. but it is at 4 degrees and separating from the Sun, Moon, Asc., and MC degrees. I am more concerned about economic issues coming back in late March through early May, including another nasty confrontation with a do-nothing, sabotaging Congress. I don’t see us in a full-out war with anyone for now (other than the endless slog in Afghanistan) but tensions can rise during the Uranus transits.
About the economy….. Yes. Most likely those concerns will dominate the headlines to be sure. I was reading an astro article the other day on the effects tr. Pluto will have on the Euro Sun (10 ’04 Capr.) and ttansiting nodes on natal Saturn (9 ’07 Sagittarius) in March 2012. The author seems to think there will be a complete collapse of the Euro at that time.

I think it’s fair to say that for many people, there is an expectation of major changes ahead and the dynamic spiritual transformation of consciousness that it will bring about. Whether consciously or unconsciously I think people are anticipating it. Here in this forum, we’re just exploring the possibilities. Of course as you are suggesting, we can’t take ourselves too seriously. On that, I totally agree.

As a new reader of this site, I don’t know Jerry at all. That said, and although I know that no references to race were meant by the words “darkening this site” and “dark Jerry”, I want to point out that after 60+ years on this planet, constantly reading and hearing “dark” and “black” as negatives can become quite emotionally and spiritually draining to people who are dark skinned.

I think where some of us might differ is that sometimes there is a tendency to place an undue emphasis on the political status quo, hoping that in time things will correct itself. I don’t see it that way. It seems obvious to me that that the old established ways of doing things are terribly outmoded, it simply doesn’t work. It needs to be re-thought from a spiritual perspective. Destruction of the old to make way for the new. Nothing very surprising about that. It is a natural process.
Anyway, if this line of discussion upsets some individuals, I’m ok about disengaging and not participating for a while. It is really not a problem.

I guess that Jerry posts more voluminously than I do, and he is quite probably a better astrologer than I am, but he isn’t the only one that sees dark potentials in these times. And so far, I am quite glad for my foresight, which I will blame mainly on my first house Saturn. Because I saw the transits of 2010 – 2015 coming WAY BACK in 2000, I positioned myself in a place where I might stand a better chance of surviving them, (they are tightly linked into my natal chart), and I dumped the hubby who kept trying to bankrupt us, figuring I would be in better shape if I could prepare.
I refinished my woodstove this summer and got it installed, given the severity of the accident that a semi threw my way on November 21st, if I had not done so I would have had no heat, and no utilities at all for the last month. Dark vision isn’t cheerful, but an ounce of prevention is worth a TON of cure. Everything I have done since 2005 was to make my lifestyle more economical and sustainable, and I will continue to both read Nancy, whose mundane astrology tops Jerry’s, thank goodness, and everyone else who posts here. I am STILL not a mundane astrologer, but I am starting to catch the tune. And the trigger for my wreck wasn’t Mercury inconjunct my Sun. Rather there was a nasty little BLM conjunction to my mercury, which, combined with all the nasty BIG transits I have running, effectively pluto-ed my Saturn, Uranus-ed my Venus, and grounded my local transport for awhile…

Re. some sensitivity to reference to the “darkness”, I believe even the bible refers to the light versus the darkness. Should we now amend that as well? I think we all know what is meant when used in the context with which it was used, and nothing else would have even entered my mind.
Lorrie U, I wasn’t asking for an amendment to the Bible. I was asking commentators to consider the fact that in mainstream United States’ society, in other “Western” nations, and in some other cultures, the words “dark” and “black” are almost always used to refer to something negative. My point was that over time this can be difficult for People of Color – regardless of what the writer’s or speaker’s purpose was.
The referent to Jerry “darkening” this blog and the referent to “dark Jerry” were the straws that broke the camel’s back for me (again regardless of those bloggers’ intents, and regardless of whether Jerry tends to focus on the negative.) On other days I may have been able to “play pass” (ignore) those descriptors, but I admit that they got to me yesterday.
If people here choose to continue to use color aphorisms to refer to something they think is or will be negative or someone who they believe is writing in a negative manner instead of just saying that an outlook looks negative, bleak, difficult, or bad, or a person is being negative or is always spouting “doom and gloom” or being a “wet blanket”, or a “downer” or other such referents, then so be it.
I ‘ve written all I intend to write on this particular subject.
I also used dark, but in no way did I refer to it or think of it as relating to the color of a person’s skin. Rather in the sense of “it is always darkest before the dawn”. It is night outside right now, and the sky is dark. I believe that is the direction that other persons were using it as well.
For years I have been told I have a dark outlook (I’m a natural blonde). I see the glass as half empty, rather than half full. While I am not depressed per se, my attitude is closer to caution / depression than optimism much of the time. For which my first house Saturn rightly gets the blame…

If I remember correctly there was a time when Will wouldn’t post because of comments someone had said? I dont remember the exact details? Paradigm Shift 2012 and Uranus/Pluto Quadratures
The generation born with Pluto in Virgo (1957-72) pushed for the transformation of perspective with the emphasis on technological service oriented devices, health and fitness issues. This generation found practical uses for the creations of the previous generation. But this generation awakened technological service that will dramatically change future paradigms or systems of belief (Uranus) because of the conjunction of Uranus to this Pluto cycle. And this is the predominating paradigm that will carry until the first square in 2012. The illusory effects of what we do for a living will be where this breakup will occur-does this really reflect me? When this occurs we wake up to the recognition of unlimited choice in our creative prowess. The period immediately preceding this first square will begin to seem oppressive in this “Virgoian” system. The overthrowing of the current paradigm is the effect of the Uranus/Pluto quadratures and this generation made drastic changes through computers, medicine, psychology and the entire service industry. Downsizing and rightsizing of corporations and workplaces and all types of efficiency concerns have been the effect of this Virgoian generational perspective. I find this to be an exceptionally good astrological piece, both for its description of the way Mars “works” while retrograding through the careful, analytic sign of Virgo, and for the attention it places on the long-running earth grand trine, a configuration I had also noticed, but had not yet written anything about. Earth grand “trine” (in harmony with) both expansive Jupiter and powerful Pluto: perfect for moving momentum into big earth projects….

THE YEAR 2012

For many years, 2012 has been singled out as a pivotal year. The multiple theses are based on realistic observations, derived from predictive sources, intuitively inspired and extrapolated from a variety of belief systems. The colorful predictions, expectations, and assertions generally focus around two themes — (1) optimistic anticipation and (2) pessimistic doom.
The optimistic group believes in a great awakening. Defined by a hopefulness for a more loving world, there is often an underlying naiveté that assumes that we are going to be rescued from our unconscious state and dysfunctional behaviors. I definitely experience the presence of higher energies that make waking up increasingly easier and possible. However, I doubt that this awakening is going to be
automatic or without effort on our part. Our serious participation is required to wake up and stay awake……
Earth Grand Trine……
Our experience of unconditional love is being facilitated by a grand trine in March 2012 in the Earth signs. Venus and Jupiter (in Taurus), Mars (in Virgo) and Pluto (in Capricorn) make a triangular formation exact on March 13, and active for several weeks before and after that date.

Nancy, about Syria. I hate to be cynical or dark, but that country has no oil, therefore this merciless dictator will be given all the time he needs to slaughter his own people. North Korea has no oil either, so their dicatorship will not end soon either. Iran has oil, and threatens oil supplies as well, therefore it should watch out. It’s that simple in my view.

a recent poll that I’m certain will be splashed all over the news found that 54 percent of Americans support going to war with Iran. After Americans voted for Bush the second time, I realized how dumb and easily manipulated my obese fellow citizens really are. Now this on the heels of the end of the Iraq war! We need to make it an obligation that before we go to war taxes must be raised to support it AND anyone in Congress who votes to go to war must volunteer their children up for the front lines!
